? about lunch meat!

~KARA~ wrote: I know prego women arent supose to eat lunch meat but is it the already packaged kind or can I eat the deli kind that they cut right in front of you? Im tired of eating pb& j!! rolleyes.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: If you must eat lunch meat
buy low salt meats
Or make your own wink.gif

GavinsMommy replied: I don't listen to things like that. I ate it! They always say things like that and then later turn it around. I'm sure it's just the packaged stuff though, so go to The Fresh Market and get your meat cut for you!!! smile.gif

5littleladies replied: I'm with Lauren-I eat it, and have with all of my girls. If you are concerned than just eat it in moderation or I've read that if you heat it up you will kill any potential germs that may be lurking. happy.gif

~KARA~ replied:

I ate it too with both my girls but the dr said NO this time! I want a turkey sandwich rolleyes.gif

ediep replied: my doc told me that I should stay away from things like salty ham and boligna. I told him that I only buy the low salt oven roasted turkey and he said thats fine to have in moderation

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I have it at least 2 or 3 times a week......

both my kids are FINE. No probs this time, either.

Just get the low-sodium kind..... and drink lots of water!

jolene555 replied: okay - i honestly have NEVER heard that you aren't supposed to have lunch meat while pg. i might have to investigate with my friends/family on this one? why can't you??? is it the salt??? is the salt content really THAT bad??? i'm pretty sure i ate a lot of lunch meat while pg with georgia, and she seems perfectly fine. i know i was also on a serious hot dog kick for a few months - are they bad too???

MommyToAshley replied: I received a pamphlet about this from my docs office when I was pregnant. The main reason you are not supposed to eat lunch meat and hot dogs is because it can contain listeria. Listeria is a bacteria that is not normally dangerous to us, but it can be extremely dangerous to a fetus. Therefore, if you do eat lunch meat, you should heat it to a high enought temp to kill any bacteria (internal temp of 160, I think). Listeria is not only in lunch meats and hot dogs but it is also in semi-soft cheeses like Brie, feta, goat, and blue cheese. I was paranoid after reading the pamphlet and avoided lunch meat all togther when I was PG. But, as long as you heat the meat to kill the bacteria, it should be fine.

MommyToAshley replied: I just did a search, here's an article for you:

http://my.webmd.com/content/Article/101/10...tm?pagenumber=3

Lunch meat is #5 on the list. Although, the whole article is probably a good read. Hope this helps.

JAYMESMOM replied: My midwife and OBGYN told me to make sure I ate the lunch meat in moderation and that it was fresh when I ate it. He also suggested packaged lunch meat over the deli lunch meat. With deli lunch meat you never no how long it has been sitting out or if it was left on the counter. As for cheese (brie, feta, etc. )
- you should only eat that if you know its fresh.

kimberley replied: wow, i must live in a cave. unsure.gif four pg's and not once has anyone warned me against lunch meat. just tuna and other fish. i ate it thru my whole pg blush.gif .

~KARA~ replied:

This is the first pregnancy my dr said anything to me about it. its odd how one time they will say something and the next say nothing about it.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I ate package lunch meat, I was not told about this until late in my PG and since I was so far along when I did find out I was PG I had already been eating it, I did stop after I heard this, it was juat one mroe thing I was freeked out about

Tamatha replied: I miss my bologna, salami, Kraft single and mayo sandwiches... sad.gif That was my standard lunch before I got pregnant... *sigh* But my little man is definitely worth the sacrifices... wub.gif Yup, I've got mommy-love pretty bad already...

3_call_me_mama replied:
Exactally what I was going to say! When i was PG with Cameron, I read an article in National Geographic about food poisoning and listeria. It is know to cause miscarriages adn stillborn births. I was extrememly worried about being pregnant so i ate no processed meats at all, and made sure all my other meat was cooked well and nothing was even the least little bit underdone. I was overparanoid but i had no problems. Also the high nitrate count in them make them generally unhealthy.

So, if you must, get something from a deli counter and have them open a fresh package and then eat sparingly

Just my 2cents.gif

paradisemommy replied: well i know a lot of pg women that don't take these things seriously - my neighbor who is pg eats raw fish and whatever she feels like and i can only think to myself - if something happened to the baby while you were on one of your selfish binges, how could you possibly live with yourself..i know i couldn't..

but not writing this to offend anyone..just my two cents..

i stayed clear of deli meats unless i had a hot sandwich and had to cook my meats well done..(this coming from a person you likes to eat her steak blood rare)..was a hard thing to do but i figure it's only 9 months - i can give that up for 9 months for a healthy baby...kwim?

mammag replied:
Same here....4pgs and this is the first time I've heard about it. I ate it with all 4... huh.gif

PanthersGirl replied: WOW Ive never heard that either.

They don't really know a lot of things.

Example: They use to think once the baby's eyes shut in the womb they didn't open til birth. 3-D and 4-D ultrasounds have proven otherwise.
