Just wanted to get your opionion on GBS and if you would ever have it.
Why or why not?

Personally, I wouldn't do it unless I weighed 400 pounds or more!
MomToJade&Jordan replied: I wouldn't have it done myself, but I know someone who has. I am a bit on the chunky side, but I have done Weight Watchers and it has worked for me.
booey2 replied: Nope couldn't and wouldn't do it, speaking as a very over weight person I don't feel that you really learn anything from having the surgery, with regards to changing your eating habits. There are, in my opinion, only two ways to realistically lose weight and you need them both to lose it in a healthy manner. They are 1) to change your way of eating and take in less then your body requires to function properly and 2) exercise. I have found that doing those two things have in the past helped me to lose weight and when I stop one of them or the other I don't have good results. This is just my opinion.
Sarah&Mackenzie replied: I would only CONSIDER it if I was extremely obese. That doesn't mean I would have I would research it. I know a woman who had it done and she looks great and hasn't gained any of the weight back and that was a couple years ago.
coasterqueen replied: I would do it if it had no consequences or if I was EXTREMELY obsese. Otherwise, nope, no way. I was very upset that my uncle did it. He weighed about 350 pounds. He has lost a lot of weight in the past, so I know he could have done it again, but he decided it was just too hard . He did want to be around for his kids and grandkids which was his motivation, but still.
My3LilMonkeys replied: I would not. If I got myself to the point of being that heavy than it is my responsibility to get myself back to a healthy weight.
kayla's mama replied: I would only do it if I was extremely obese. My cousin had this done about 5 years ago. They left utensils inside of her which caused an infection. she has really had nothing but trouble since shes done it. The amount of food that she can consume is less than a cup. Nope not for me unless I was extremely obese.
A&A'smommy replied: ONLY if I was extremely overweight, I'm overweight now BUT I'm finding that dieting and exercising IS working for me and I feel that I can loose the weight by doing that!!
MyLuvBugs replied: Oh this is a touchy subject with me. Personally, (and I mean no offense), but DIET AND EXERCISE!! That's the key. Surgery like this is just a way of starving your body of nutrients. IMO people that get to be 300-400 lbs over weight have more psycologial problems than a "weight condition". They're usually really depressed, and food is their comfort. They don't eat the right food for their metabolism level, and they don't usually exercise at all. Therefore, their bodies just end up getting bigger and bigger. Again this is JUST MY OPINION.... lol I think people should see a counsellor or therapist, get a dietician, and a work-out coach and get that weight off naturally first. Teach themselves HOW to live a healthy lifestyle. But that's just me.
MamaJAM replied: I am overweight...not to an 'extreme' (like 300+) -- but I could never have GBS. I think diet and excercise are much healthier than cutting your food supply so drastically.
PhiMuMommy replied: i know someone who had it done and shed weight like crazy he is literally 1/3 of the person he was..he has dropped ALL the meds that he was on for cholesterol, blood pressure.. you name it he had some... he looks completely different and feels so much better. the worst part he said was eating VERY VERY slowly. because he could literally only take a couple bites and be full. so he had to be sure he was eating the right foods and took his time otherwise he'd get sick. he is soo much happier and healthier.. he weighed almost 350 maybe even more.. not totally for certain.
it was a complete lifestyle change and it also had himdown for awhile because it would hurt to move around. if i was very overweight i would definantly do it.. it takes commitment though..
Kentuckychick replied: If I were in a position that I needed the surgery which fortunately isn't the case, I personally would NEVER have it done. 3 years ago I watched my aunt almost die after having the procedure done and today she still has problems.
She went in for the surgery in early December, they knicked her bowels in several places (which is apparently not that unusual) and she developed a raging infection, along with other complications. She was in a hospital where the doctors, both at the hospital and the ones who did her procedure were just going to let her die. Luckily my cousin worked at the University hospital here in and was able to get her transfered. She remained in the hospital in an induced coma, for 3 months and then spent another month in the ICU before being allowed to go home in April (just in time for her daughter's wedding). She was dependent upon TPN (IV nourishment) for many, many months and could not even drink water with vomiting it back up for a long time.
She's been in and out of the hospital many times in the past couple of years, goes to the doctors weekly and will soon have a surgery to hopefully close the hole that's been open in her abdomen for 3 years now (gross huh?). She still has trouble eating to this day and all it takes is one bite too much to cause her to vomit.
Oh, and in the end they "undid" the surgery. So what she's suffering from are just the horrible effects of what the doctors botched.
Sorry to be so blunt... but it's just the honest truth. She wishes more people could see what she's been through. I know it goes well for some people, but after all of this happened my aunt found out just how many people actually die from the surgery... and will just leave it this... the numbers are shocking.
mommycat2244 replied: I personally could never see myself under going this type of procedure under any circumstances. Rachel, I had a friend of mine's father die from this last year. He went from being an over weight sweetheart of a guy to dead in 12 months flat. (Sorry, didn't meant to be too blunt!!!) Although I have ranged in weight since I can remember from being a toothpick to a chubby girl, I know that the only real sane, healthy way for me to loose weight is by good old fashioned diet and exercise. I try to sympathize with those out there that have had more problems than myself as far as this is concerned, but I just can't see myself doing something so drastic without trying everything that I can mentally and physically to remedy the problem. All in all, I just don't think that it sounds like such a great idea.
