A better option to disposable diapers - w/o using cloth?

coasterqueen wrote: I came across this website for gDiapers. They seem like a neat idea. DH said I could give them a try if they will work ok with our septic system. I've emailed the company to see how they work with septics.

gDiapers

Might be a good option to make the planet safer w/o all the trash but not go as far as cloth. wink.gif

I'll let you know if I try them and what I hear back on septic use in case anyone is interested.

One downfall is they are a bit more expensive than disposables. So expense is definitely an issue over using cloth. But IMO, there is a big expense in laundering them (i.e. water, electricity, soap, drying, etc, etc). So I'm not sure how the expense difference is between using cloth/disposables is anyways. I've seen numbers, but I'm not sure they take into account the laundering factor. Anyone know?

moped replied: Please let us know if you try them - I am curious!

Kaitlin'smom replied: hummm interestign idea. I will look more on the site not sure I quite get how its all gonna flush right.

coasterqueen replied:
There is a video that shows you how to flush them. They look great and I'm sure they'd go down my toilet, but not sure how my septic would take it.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I watched it looks simple but I am not sure how my system woudl handle that either. Cousre I dont have anyone in dipesrs so if you do try them let us know how they work.

coasterqueen replied:
I just found a link on how it works with septics. I emailed it to DH and he said we can give it a try. So now I just have to wait til grocery day so I can order them. smile.gif Course DH said he's not messing with them. rolleyes.gif But for me I'd rather try these because I barely have enough time to wash what laundry we have alone, let alone to do seperate loads of cloth diapers.

So, I'll let you know how they go after I get them. Megan's a perfect candidate to review them. She's my major leaker (pee and poo) and I swear the child goes through TONS of diapers daily. rolleyes.gif

coasterqueen replied: Well Dh gave me my grocery money early so I ordered some. thumb.gif Hopefully they will be here by the weekend so I can really get to try them out. We'll have to monitor our septic outflow for a few days to see how it's handling it.

I'll let anyone who may be interested in knowing how it goes.

Essentially what they are are cloth diapers with disposable liners. (Cause you have to watch that littel G thing right? ) Or do you throw them out after? also I see them rip that packet thing open adn then swish the inside then toss the packet in the toilet then filus. So do you have to touch that packet when it is soaked with pee adn covered with poop? Just curious cause i can't figure out how you would separate them other wise. Oh and I actually do have acost analysis on teh cloth diapering thing (we switched recently to all cloth)
our light bill went up about $3 a month(but mostly cause teh dryer, but in the summer they will be hung outside (helps to remove stains that might occur too)
and we have a well so there was no increase in water bill (only do 1 extra load of laundry ever 3 days or so) and our trash amount has been about 2 bags less per week. (and to take it to the dump it's $3 a bag. So that's $6 a week saving so it's about $24 a month savings, and spending $3 extra on lights. So actaully SAVING US $21 a month not including the cost of diapers (easily spent $60 a month or MORE on diapers) and so far I have spent about $35 on cloth diapers. and nex tmonth I won't have to biy any or the month after that, or teh month after that. etc. (Athough Mollie and any other cloth diaperers can attest to this : it is ADDICTING to shop for and buy cute new diapers. (the prints, patterns, colors, enbroidery etc.. VERY CUTE!) So overall we are saving this month $56. Next month it will probably be more cause we wont' be buying any diapers. (unless I get a cute valentines one blush.gif ) But anything that is better fgor the environment is a KUDOS inmy book smile.gif Good luck karen and be sure to let us know how they work!!

This is the same stuff in a disposable. Just because you're flushing them doesn't mean there's no waste. What happens to the "Super Absorbing cells" once you flush them? Here's an interesting article on what happens to "sewer sludge":

http://www.riles.org/Rockefeller_NS.pdf

It still poses the same problems a sposies do. And the reviews I've seen aren't very good. They have clogged sewers numerous times. And even if you did compost them, why would you want those chemicals all over your plants & fod you've grown?

Cloth are still far better. And if you're washing the covers anyway, why not just use cloth inserts bigthink.gif rolleyes.gif ?

coasterqueen replied: Thank you for your thoughts Mollie. I don't have sewer concerns because I have a Class 1 aeration septic system so whatever goes into my septic comes out as clear water....you could actually drink it if you want to. My septic tank "recycles" and the water goes out into a waterway near my house. I do not know how my septic will handle them, but we are going to monitor it while we use them. We have a company that monitors our septic so we'll just call them and have them come out a time or two this month when we start using them so they can tell us if they are ok or not.

As far as what's in them, I'd have to look into that further myself. wink.gif

Hopefully it will all work out and my septic will handle them and I will free up the landfills of my diaper use wink.gif If not, I will go back to disposables.

I admire you for going with cloth. If I didn't work full time, then have to come home and do all the chores I could have done during the day I'd probably take the time to do cloth. I don't even know if doing the gdiapers will be something I can do since I don't have time to do laundry as it is.

As as far as compost....we have clay soil so a garden doesn't grow very well anyways around us. So everything I would grow...I would not eat, therefore I think it would be ok. biggrin.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied:
I just have to ask....have you ever drank it? emlaugh.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Those look really cool! thumb.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Nope and never will! I hope. tongue.gif But it really is that clear and it's approved by the city so it has to be "drinking" water capable since it goes right into a waterway.

3_call_me_mama replied:
I gotta get one of those!! I don't think our water is safe even straight from teh well!! J/K ! tongue.gif
