A silly question about MSG?

coasterqueen wrote: Okay I feel foolish asking about this since I have been pg before but I guess I don't remember or something. ROFL.

Is there MSG in mexican food or just in chinese? Or WHERE? I'm freaking out because I had mexican for lunch and had a lot of that scrumptious salsa the lady makes and now I'm wondering. wacko.gif I'm wondering...a - why did I eat it because I feel horrible now, lol and b - does it have msg in it? dunno.gif

Psst, sorry for posting so much today. I'm full of questions today..got more but I'll wait a bit. ROFL. rolling_smile.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: I'm not totally positive but one of my favorite mexican resteraunts (and an indian one that I love) both started doing something different. I got a raging headache within a couple of hours of eating at either establishment, twice in a row. Never happened before. Hmmmm.

coasterqueen replied: So what do you do if you don't know? There's not too many places I can eat downtown because they are mostly sandwich shops and if I can't eat lunch meat (which I didn't know with Kylie)...what am I supposed to eat for lunch? ROFL. I don't like salads so that's out.

I'm CRAVING hotdogs MADLY and I can't have them either. bawling.gif bawling.gif

What can I have that *I* like to eat? ROFL.

jcc64 replied: How pathetic am I?! I thought you were talking about a cable sports channel (the MSG channel- stands for Madison Square Garden) here in NY. Says alot about what goes on in this house, doesn't it?

DansMom replied: I associate MSG with Chinese food only---I don't think Mexican food tends to contain MSG. If your salivary glands in your jaw ache as part of a headache or you get really thirsty, that's a good sign of MSG, although it can also be just a lot of salt.

I hope you find something to eat! biggrin.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: Honestly Karen. Unless you've had problem pregnancies, I'd go ahead and eat what you like. I even had sushi the other day <hanging head in shame> LOL.

Hot sandwich meat is ok so how about a hot corned beef & swiss or a grilled ham & cheese?

I watched everything that went past my lips when I was pregnant with K but I was really quite miserable. I probably wouldn't eat a package of hot dogs but I doubt that one will be a big deal.

Jeanne...you are killing me! rolling_smile.gif

coasterqueen replied:
ROFLMAO!!!! rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I tell you before I found out I was PG I ate, all mentioned except the sushi....not sure about that. But once I found out I was so freaked out, but I still ate hotdogs on occasion....and I never knew about not eating lunch meat while PG until after I had Kaitlin..... wink.gif I did try and watch what I ate but I still had what I wanted in moderation.

Oh and I to associate MSG with chineese food....and I know a few around here dont use it anymore

Jamison'smama replied: You can call the restaurant--they should tell you if it contains MSG--I think it is just a chinese food thing but I suppsed it can be anywhere.

I eat an occasional hotdog---really, I can't do what I tried to do with Jamison---this pregnancy. I couldn't stand hot food for a couple of weeks- so I lived on Subway sandwiches--

don't fret too much---(easy to say huh?)

coasterqueen replied:
LOL! Dh and I used to LIVE on cold sandwiches because they helped us lose weight. I'm gonna gain SOOOOO much this time around..all that weight I lost and more with the way I'm going. I think maybe I'll go buy a turkey and a ham and cook it at home and make my own hot sandwiches for lunch. ROFL.

I think I will ask the restaurant the next time I'm there wink.gif.

booey2 replied: Not sure on the MSG, but have you tried an all veggie and cheese sandwich or sub. I usually have a veggie and cheese sub from subway when they go out at the office and I just switch up the cheese and dressing. Hope this helps.

coasterqueen replied:
LOL. I have severe food phobias and hate most veggies. I was so freaked out when I was pg with Kylie because of all my food phobias and how I was going to eat right for her but the doctor reassured me the things I'm eating are good and that as long as I take my vitamin I'd be fine. She turned out great, lol.

So unless it's a greenbean, corn and possibly pea sandwich that's out of the question for me. ROFL.

Yes, I'm very weird.

lsjulee replied: Most Asian foods have MSG added. Especially those soup dishes and vege dishes. Cos MSG will bring out the flavor of these two type of dishes. I don't know about Mexican food. I thought they'd add salt than MSG? Actually when I was preggie, I avoid salt as it would make me bloated.

kit_kats_mom replied:
Ewww Karen! You are wierd! LOL

The idea of a sub like that makes me gag. YUCK! tongue.gif rolling_smile.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Heee makes me wanna gag too! rolling_smile.gif

activebabe replied: This doesn't really help with the MSG question, but as far as hotdogs are concerned....I've been buying uncured hotdogs that don't have any nitrates or nitrites in them, and the meat is usually a much higher quality, too! They've been GREAT!

Josie83 replied: What's this about not being able to eat luncheon meat when you're pregnant, why not?! I never heard that! not that I actaully ate it I don't think, but that's not the point, why can't you have it? wacko.gif xx

MommyToAshley replied:
Soft cheeses such as feta, brie, along with lunch meat and hot dogs may contain bacteria called listeria that are harmful to unborn babies. But, if you cook the meat to a hot enough temperature to kill the bacteria, then they are safe to eat. If we get lunch meat, I still cook Ashley's before giving it to her and I usually make myself a hot sandwich too.

Josie83 replied:
Thanks for the explanation, Dee Dee. I knew about soft cheeses, but the other I hadn't heard of! I think you get so much conflicting information when you're pregnant, sometimes its just easier to go with what you think's best . . . xx
