Abby is in the hospital - freak accident

mommy~to~a~bunch wrote: Hey everyone, we're in the hospital with Abby. Yesterday, she was playing with a crayon, and took a bite of it before I could get it away from her, then she inhaled it. So I brought her to the clinic, they did X-rays, couldn't see it (of course), and 2 different doctors listened. They decided to fly her in the LifeFlight chopper to Duluth at about 5pm yesterday. DH & I had to drive there, my mom's watching the other kids. It ook almost 3 hours to get here because it was raining then it changed to snow. Usually it takes about 2.5 hours.

Abby slept the whole way there, and the doctor called us on the cell phone to see if they should start the procedure, or to wait until we got there. We heard her crying, and couldn't let her cry for another 2 hours until we got there. So we said go ahead & start.

It took about an hour, and they did find a piece of crayon in her left lung. It had started to melt the doctor said, so it's a good thing they got it when they did. She's doing great now, slept pretty good, and hopefully we will be home later today.

Who knew a tip of crayon could cause such problems? It's not the first time she's eaten one, and I doubt it will be the last. DH said it was one of those freak accidents that just happen.

So that's our excitement for now. I'll update again once we are home.

My sister ate boxes of crayons when we were kids....scary to think of all the little things that can go wrong.

And yes definitely that's a freak accident!

I remember when I worked at Penney's we had to call 911 once because one of our coworkers accidently inhaled several of her perscription pills. At the time we didn't realize how big a concern it was and were more worried about her not being able to breathe well. She ended up spending several days in the hospital while they monitored her because of the pills that had already dissolved.

It's good that you took her in and didn't play around with it.

Abby is doing great, and is back to her normal self again. We will be heading home in a couple hours. It's over with now, and she will be fine. Nothing else needs to be done, except to watch for fever or wheezing.

Thank you for the thoughts & prayers. It means a lot to us .

She was sitting right on my lap when it happened. Abby grabbed one of the kids' brand new crayons, and then she bit off a piece before I could get it away. And when I did, she started crying, and at that moment, she must've sucked it in. Then she was coughing, coughing, coughing, and then I heard wheezing sounds. I knew then that she must have inhaled it.

We're home now, and everything is alright. Abby slept the entire 2.5 hour drive home, and is full of energy now.

I'm so glad it's over with .

I'm with Lisa ~ I'll be watching Allie a lot more closely around crayons from now on! She's gotten them from Andrew and chewed on them lots of times.

We're home, and she's doing just fine. She has a bit of a cough, and we need to watch for signs of infection, but otherwise she has no restrictions, no meds, etc.

Abby is back to her little self again .
