Accepted to an online university...

GavinsMommy wrote: Pretty much. The admissions adviser told me that all I have to do is actually fill out the application now, but he said that I fill all requirements and that I will have no problem and to go ahead and start thinking about the entrance essay.

But uh......the BBA in Business Administration is THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS...he said that of course there are grants and loans and such but.......that is a huge amount of money. Does anyone know what is "average" to be awarded in grants and such? I don't know...I'm just overwhelmed. I would have to get a job and put Gavin in daycare, I don't want to do that...

Edited to say...I can attend the university physically also...it is American InterContinental and there is one in ATL

PascosGirl replied:
Well I know someone that went there and they said it was a ripoff and they were unable to trasnfer their credits to Mercer University because the college was not accredited by the state. They told her she would be able to transfer the credits, but really, she couldn't. I would stay away from the Keiser Colleges and others of that sort. Why not check into a community college? They have online courses and offer the pell grant. Besides, if you have to put Gavin in daycare, your pell will help cover that.

GavinsMommy replied: Well, I'm not going to put him in daycare, I was just saying that if I had to pay a lot of money for school I would have to work and put him in daycare. But I wouldn't do that. I would move here before I did that.

Wasn't accredited? AIU is accredited.. unsure.gif Hmm....

GavinsMommy replied:
I don't want to go to community college. It'd be okay for an associate's and then transfer to get a BA, but that isn't what I want to do. I don't want to physically attend. I don't want to leave Gavin. bawling.gif

PascosGirl replied:
Oh, I know it is hard. However it may have to be done.

They are accredited, but it is a different type. Can't remember the name. I believe it is SACS accredited. I know you can trasfer credits to another SACS school but I don't think you can trasnfer to a state school. I could give you my sister's e mail. She knows all about that too since she just spent 4 years getting a degree from Keiser College only to find out it wasn't worth what she spent going there. It was also SACS accredited.

PascosGirl replied:
I am pretty sure that you can do most of your classes through distance learning at a community college. They have telecourses (which means you only go in 2 times the whole semester) and internet courses. You should check into all options though before deciding on one college.

GavinsMommy replied: well, i wouldn't ever try to transfer to a different school though...no desire to be in a classroom. laugh.gif

PascosGirl replied:
Well then if you have no plans to transfer, I say go for it! A business degree should hold up from anywhere.

BTW - these 2 people I was speaking of both got medical degrees. That may be the difference.

kit_kats_mom replied: I received my degree in LIS from Florida State Univeristy via their online program. I would just do a lot of research before you signed on with this school. My DH was looking into online universities for his PhD and University of Phoenix online sounds great but CEO's and other people who have delt with their graduates think less of a degree from that school than others.

I did get my AA from a community college by taking night classes, televised courses and a couple of online ones.

As far as the money, I just took out loans. Honestly, that is the one debt that is worth it...and education is invaluable.

Good luck!

amymom replied: Good Luck! I know in NYS the State University has a whole division called Empire College that is distance learning. I do not know if you can do it as an out of state resident but I am sure you can find some information online for the SUNY-Empire College.

Also, I think the accredation will be important when finding a job or going onto grad school. Like you said you want to make the big bucks. rolling_smile.gif Check into it carefully with more than just the schools admission director.

Good Luck. You will do well!!!

PascosGirl replied:
Yeah, FSU offers a lot of online programs. I don't care too much for the college she mentioned.

Also, she is probably eligible for grants, so she should get as many as possible.

kit_kats_mom replied:
Oh yeah, I received some grants when I was at the community college but it was only like 1500.00 total over the 7 years I went there. But I was part time and working and I didn't have a baby. That would probalby make you eligible for more grants. thumb.gif

PanthersGirl replied: I agree with most. A lot of community colleges offer all courses online now. I wouldn't pay all that for an online school such as that. I have heard many horror stories about them. And they will accept anyone!

Just be careful. Going through your community online courses you wouldn't have to leave him. Then to transfer for your BA you could do pt evening classes or something to where you don't have to leave him often! Besides it usually takes a year or two to get it all done to transfer anyway.

Another con to the online U that you speak of, it can be difficult to do all the courses online. If you go through community college you could always go to a professor for help!! Its money better spent!

mammag replied: I agree I wouldn't go with one that isn't transferable... Even if you know for sure right now that you would not want to continue after that and need to transfer, you never know how you will feel in the future and it's best to keep your options open. You may end up enjoying it and even deciding when Gavin starts school to go further with it. Just my 2 cents...

But good for you for looking at ways to better yourself and your situation!!! thumb.gif

CCTandME replied: I have taken business courses online from Hudson Valley Comm College (no shame here for going to a comm college). There are many other colleges that I can transfer to. They have all of that information available in the business office. They can tell you exactly which courses other colleges will allow as transfers. If you have a specific college in mind to transfer to, you can design your classes to meet that colleges requirements. Also, I have gotten Pell grants and Financial Aid.
