Alert: Lead in children's lunchboxes - This is infuriating

jcc64 wrote: Dh sent this to me this morning. Apparently, those soft, insulated vinyl kids' lunchboxes that are sold everywhere contain high levels of lead, which as you know, is highly dangerous for kids. Why are we continually having to protect our kids from dangerous contaminants in products designed specifically for them?! Is it asking too much for some government regulation regarding our children's well being?? Oh, I forgot, we're not allowed to intefere with a business' ability to amass as much profit as possible...

This is outrageous and unacceptable. I hope these companies pay in this lawsuit. If they are hit in the wallet, they will be more careful about what they sell because appearantly kid's safety isn't at the top of their list! However, it looks like they are going after the retailers instead of the manufacturers which doesn't make sense to me?

My2Beauties replied: ohmy.gif I am appalled ohmy.gif

luvbug00 replied: OH that's just wonderful growl.gif Mya's Got an insulated lunchbox!!
My Day is just getting better!! blink.gif

amynicole21 replied:
This always happens, Dee Dee. It is so insane! As you know, the company I work for is a wholesale distributor for firearms (as well as other sporting goods). Anytime a kid hurts himself with a bb gun, or someone goes on a shooting spree with a gun that some store purchased from us and sold to him, we are named in the lawsuit. We didn't sell it to the guy, we didn't make the thing, we just acted as the middle-man. Still, we have to go to court and spend tons of money defending ourselves. Aaaargh!

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. blush.gif

MomToMany replied:
ITA with what you said.

coasterqueen replied: ohmy.gif Yikes! I almost bought one the other day for Kylie because we go for picnic lunches in the park often. Glad I didn't. Although DH and I use one every day to bring our lunch to work. Yikes, wonder if ours contain it? unsure.gif We've been using them for years.

amynicole21 replied: You know, I wonder if the insulated portion of my breastpump has the same problem? It's where I keep the milk I pump every day... unsure.gif

kimberley replied: ohmy.gif ohmy.gif that's ridiculous!!!

jcc64 replied: My kids have been using them for YEARS. My oldest son is now 13. Each one of my kids has one as we speak. And it's not like this story was out in the mainstream media.
I'm beside myself with rage.

Kaitlin'smom replied:
ohmy.gif

I dont use them, but I dont really have a need for one, thanks fo rthe info

coasterqueen replied:
Yikes, not sure. I don't really use mine except if I forget my cooler bag. But I use a lunch bag to store mine. ohmy.gif

coasterqueen replied: OKay, I'm going to get a test kit TODAY! mad.gif

jcc64 replied: Just went to the CPSC website to see if the recall was listed there, which it wasn't, but instead thought you might want to see just how many children's products are:

DansMom replied: That is unbelievable news. Sickening.

MomToMany replied: My kids used one last year, but they lost them. We've been using brown bags so far this year, and probably will continue to!

That is so awful. Our kids aren't safe from anything anymore sad.gif .

kimberley replied:
ohmy.gif that list is out of control!!!!! i swear, everytime i read stuff like this i wanna move to the country, sew my own clothes, grow my own food and forget the rest of the world! our children are our most precious commodities and to think that many businesses knowingly put them at risk to make a buck.. just makes me ill to my stomach!!!
soapbox.gif

A&A'smommy replied: ohmy.gif OMG I can't believe that crap what in the world are those people THINKING!!! mad.gif mad.gif I think Alyssa can just eat in the lunchroom our meals here are healthy anyway

kit_kats_mom replied: That's awful! ohmy.gif I just threw DH's Vinyl insulated lunch box away and I've forwarded the link to everyone in my email address book that has children or knows anyone with children. Bad companies smash.gif smash.gif smash.gif smash.gif

jcc64 replied: I did the same thing, Cary. I was wondering if I should call Target, where I recently bought mine. But who- the corporate headquarters, the local store (where it would most likely be ignored)- the manufacturer??
Lead exposure is nothing to mess around with. It only takes very small amounts to affect a child's brain development. God, you could just drive yourself insane with worry about all the potential toxins we are unwittingly exposing our kids to.

My2Beauties replied: Makes you wonder if some diaper bags are made out of this crap huh.gif you put their diapers and jarred baby foods and clothes in there and stuff mad.gif Now that makes me want to test them because one of her diaper bags I just got rid of is that same texture as those lunchboxes ohmy.gif

Sorry, couldn`t help but laugh - I feel that way too sometimes. Too bad life gets in the way!!!!!! rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

redchief replied:
This is awful in a world that knows the dangers of heavy metal ingestion, especially with regards to children. You're right, it shouldn't happen and every one of the lunchboxes must be recalled. Unfortunately federal legislation, near as I've been able to find, almost exclusively concentrates on lead paint hazards. I know that up until 1987 or 1988 plumbers were still allowed to use lead based solder in plumbing potable water joints. Perhaps we should all write our federal legislators asking them to expand the lead hazard laws to include soft goods, specifically, as well.

As far as why the lawsuit is concentrating on the distributors of the lunchboxes instead of the manufacturers, my guess is this; the manufacturers are outside of the reach of the federal court system. That is, the lunchboxes are manufactured outside the US by companies held outside the US. In that case the only recourse is to find liability with the companies that contracted with and imported the lunchboxes.

coasterqueen replied: Well Dh doesn't get serious about anything and he did with this. We went and bought test kits at lunch today and will test our bags tonight. I will literally puke if our bags have it considering I store my daughter's nutrition - ALL her nutrition - in one on a daily basis. bawling.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I am buying a test...I'm just SICK and ANGRY sad.gif

jem0622 replied: How terrible! I need to run out and get a test kit.

CantWait replied: It may sound awful, but with all the things we have to look out for everyday, this is just another one for me. I seriously don't let it bother me that much. It sucks, but there's always something it seems. sad.gif

CCTandME replied: Great!! I ordered a Kim Possible lunch box & backpack for Cailee and a Tinkerbell for Camryn. They were so excited yesterday when they came. Now I may have to take them away. Grrrrrrrr!!!!
There was also a report once on the lead levels in the toys kids get out of gumball machines. Why-o-why are they even offered if there is a problem. mad.gif

coasterqueen replied:
I usually don't worry either because it's almost impossible to stay safe from everything but in this instance it seems like a pretty cheap thing to do to test and/or throw the things away.

3_call_me_mama replied: Cameron's is a Thermos brand (which apparently isn't in the recall) but I don't feel any better about it. I to owas wondering about the breast milk cooler bags. My avent one is almost identical to hsi lunch box (Minus the scooby doo on the outside:) )Gonna get a kit and test them:(

punkeemunkee'smom replied: mad.gif It is truly maddening when something as harmful as this is allowed into our children's everyday lives! I was sickened recently when researching my daughter's reaction to her immunizations to find out how many Toxic subtances are allowed in our children's bodies without our knowledge! For instance Aluminum and Ethylene glycol(the MAIN ingredient in Anti-freeze) are used in 4 vaccinations! Our FDA has long ignored studies conducted in other countries that point out the dangers in injecting our children with some of these toxic substances! It is time for companies that produce products geared toward our children are held accountable! We feel like we are doing the best job by packing a lunch box in a container designed to keep things cold and fresh and then you find out wacko.gif nope it contains one of the most harmful metals when ingested! soapbox.gif banghead.gif Someone in charge please somewhere show a little common sense!

mummy2girls replied: OMG! jenna has a dora one:(
