An interesting trip to the ER
lesliesmom wrote: Last night, when I was giving DD#3 (Lindsay - 5mts) a bath I noticed one of her toes was swollen and turning colors. I pulled her out of the tub to inspect and a piece of hair had wrapped itself around one of the toes and was cutting off circulation. The toe was swollen that I couldn't tell if there was still hair around it or not, plus she was losing layers of skin from the loss of circulation. So... she and I hopped in the van and ran over to the ER. This was probably the fastest I was ever seen in the ER. Within 15 minutes I would say there were 5 nurses in our room trying to remove the last of the hair that was wrapped around her toe. Thankfully, we caught it soon enough that there seems to be no damage. They took x-rays and those looked fine and sent us home with some antibiotic ointment to treat the area. This morning the tip of the toe has returned to its normal color, however, the base of the toe is still swollen and red, we were told it will probably bruise over. Going to follow up with her Dr. this morning.
I just can't figure out how this happened... it's so odd.... needless to say, I think mommy is going to get her hair chopped this weekend, even though we can't identify whose hair it may have been (DD#1 has long hair as do I)...
amynicole21 replied: Oh man! I've heard of that happening before. How scary I'm so glad you found it in time.
1lilpeanut2love replied: SO very scary! Glad she is doing okay. Hope her toe heals soon!
gr33n3y3z replied: Wow I'm glad everything is ok I hope her toe gets better
CantWait replied: Glad you caught it. Hope it heals fast.
Kaitlin'smom replied: well that was weird..........how does somethign like that happen?
glad you caught it and hope it heals fast.
redchief replied: What a strange occurence. I don't recall ever hearing of that happening. Good catch mom! I'm glad everything seems okay.
lesliesmom replied: Just got back from the follow-up. Dr. says it looks okay. Need to watch it, try and soak it (yeah, right). Put her on oral antibiotics as well as the Bacitracin ointment. Thankfully the color is back in the tip of the toe. The base is still discolored and swollen but that will take time to heal. As long as it gets better there's nothing else to do. If it gets worse, they may have to do a "surgery" on it to make sure everything's cleaned out and okay.
BTW... the Dr. said he's only seen this about 3 times in his 15+ years...
lisar replied: Glad to know she is okay. A friend of mines baby done that to her finger. Babies just dont realize it like we would.
I am glad shes fine though.
A&A'smommy replied: awwwiee poor thing I'm glad she is okay though!!
holley79 replied: I had read about toe tourniquet syndrome before having Annika. I check her toes nightly during bathtime just to be on the safe side. I have found hair wrapped aruond her toes before in the past but was able to get it before it became red or discolored. I'm glad everything was ok. It is scary.
Kaitlin'smom replied: just wondering is this something they do? how does it happen?
lesliesmom replied: I'm not really sure how it happened. Only thing I can come up with is piece of hair got caught in the footie of one of her outfits and as she was "playing" and kicking it just got wound around the toe.
But, the toe is almost back to its normal color. Still swollen but looking much better. I also talked with a guy I go to church with who is an ER trauma doc at a children's hospital, he said out of 100,000 ER cases they see a year, they may see this one or twice in that time..just to let you know how rare and odd an occurrence this is.
redchief replied: I knew it must be rare, because I've seen almost everything there is to see, but I haven't seen that yet.
luvmykids replied: That happened to my MIL, every time she called and heard one of the kids crying she'd tell me to check their toes.
Glad you caught it and hope it feels better soon!
mckayleesmom replied: This has happened to us a number of times unfortunantly.....With my son I always made sure before closing his diaper that no hairs were around his little member..... It did get caught on one of Russell's toes one time.
ALSO..just at tip....removed all rubberbands from little girls hair before putting them to bed...Mckaylee fell asleep one time and she had one in her hair....Woke up blood curdling screaming in the middle of the night because she had rapped it around her thumb....I had to get tweezers to remove it and dh had to hold her down.
