Any interesting facts about your area?

Crystalina wrote: I know there are many about my area but I'll say what I know right off the top of my head.

We have the I70 & 77 interchange wich has the largest area of land coverage. It aslo has exiting off to the left instead of the right. Another fact about it that is a bit scarey is that it is over many abandoned mines and in 1995 one of the lanes caved in and luckily no car fell in. It has since been fixed but I always feels like I'm driving on a ticking time bomb. unsure.gif

We are also where Sen. John Glenn is from. For anyone who doesn't know he is the first man to orbit the earth. He has also since went up in space and is the oldest man to go up. I drive by the house where him and his wife Annie lived everyday. It is now a muesum and John Glenn comes back home every once in awhile.

Hoppalong Cassidy is also from here and every year we have a huge Hopalong Cassidy festival. Old western movie stars used to attend but they have since all died. We still get the lookalikes. wink.gif

One more famouse person from here is Agnes Moorehead. She was the witchy grandmother on Bewitched. I'm not exactley sure which house is hers but they just had an Agnes Morehead night where they showed all of her old movies.

This is where Cambridge Glass was made. There are many many collectors in the area and there is still one very tiny shop open here. They will actually take the small glass fragments that are left over and throw them in the landscaping and visitors come and pick the glass out of the gravel or out from under the flowers. I only own one small piece of Cambridge glass (a salt). I'm scared to death the kids will break it. I will buy more as they get older but the price will surely only go up. happy.gif

We also have Wills Creek. Legend is that it is named after a little boy who drowned in the creek but checking history it has been named that for ions. I think it's a way for parents to keep their kids out of it. smile.gif Wills Creek is also (from what I've heard) the only waterway in the world that flows opposite of the equator. I've never checked but everybody says it. I'll have to believe them.

We also have part of the underground railroad here. I've never been there though. It is on my "to do" list.

Anyway, that's all that I can think of without really digging. I'm sure there is much more. My area is very interesting. How about yours?

Simplebeliever replied: Where I'm from is the birth place of Dr. Seuss.

Another near by city is the birth place of Volley Ball.

The Quabbin reservior is near here as well. It was in a movie by Steven King (Dream Catcher). I was giddy when I watched that movie because there were lots of landmarks in it that are semi near here and that I visit a lot.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: The Nile River flows north away from the equator, also. wink.gif

My town has a law on the books making it illegal to not smile. We also have a smilefest every year.

amymom replied:
OMG! I would be in trouble. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Let's see, the county I live in is the biggest in New York State. I believe it has the least amount of people in New York State. Our county has more cows than people.

I live on the St. Lawrence River and it was just a river before they put the "Seaway" in, in the 1950's they moved or knocked down over 50 houses and buildings in our village. You can still see where the roadway used to be.

I live here! What could be more intereresting than that? lol!

moped replied: Where I am originally from is where Winnie the pooh was invented....Winnipeg

Where i live now it is illegal to park your horse in front of city hall - LOL

Home of the Calgary Stampede - largest outdoor show on earth

Home of the 1988 winter olympics

Someone told me that ceasers 9the drink) were first invented here....maybe those are more canadian things

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Most of my mom and dad's family grew up where Alex Trebeck is from...Sudbury.

The host of Jeopardy, if anyone doesn't know who he is.

I live in the Nation's capital as well. happy.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: We are Home to the Blue Angels. user posted image

That is all I can think of.

My3LilMonkeys replied: I live about 20 min. from Scranton which is where the tv show The Office is set.

I also live 10 min. from the town where (supposedly) the first lynching of a black person in the North was held (and unfortunately many people in our area are very proud of that).

That's about it...

PrairieMom replied: I live 1 hour away from the worlds only corn palace!

mom2my2cuties replied: Wow - I can give you lots smile.gif I live in Nashville, TN - I don't think it gets more "interesting" or "odd" than that smile.gif But since I sort of live in 2 suburbs of Nashville, I will start with them. (PS - Jennifer and other ghost lovers, this is gonna make you wanna come visit Tish)

Metro Nashville, TN -

1 - Battle of Franklin - Said to be one of the bloodiest battles of the 19th centuries -the total body count stood at Confederates - 6,606 Union 2,326. The greatest loss of general officers in the war occurred in this battle on December 1. (For the History Buffs - Battle of Franklin Info)

8 - You would be hard pressed to find a city richer and deeper in history and southern culture.

9 - Despite the fact that HELLO! It's Nashville, TN, it is somewhat difficult to find delicious food!

I will post more later smile.gif I found a page just now about hauntings in TN that have me going smile.gif

Calimama replied: 1. I live on the base where the " Pendleton 8" are from.. the ones with all that drama about them supposedly killing Iraqi's for revenge.

2. We CONSTANTLY have people with signs saying " Kill or be killed" and such as we enter base.

3. There are almost more barber shops than places to eat.

4. The town celebrates EVERY holiday with a bang.. even senior citizens day. blink.gif

5. If you pull into a parking lot with 5 cars and 4 of them will have a Marine sticker on them.

6. We have one of the highest rates of infedelity in CA.

redplaydoh replied:

Sounds like you live very close to where I used to live before moving to Switzerland last year. Springfield MA??? I used to live in Connecticut, just across the border from Springfield. I miss that area and miss the kid's museum there.

huggybugboy replied: Since I dont know much about the new place, I'll do my old home town which is very small.

* It has the tallest totem pole. WOW!
* It is known as the place where "horses have the right of way."
* The county is known for it's uh, marijuana. rolleyes.gif
* Our forests were used for filming one of the Jurassic Park movies and Outbreak
* One of the neighboring towns was used for the filming of the Jim Carey movie, The
Majestic
* Heard of the show "Eureka"? We make fun of it.
* Yeah not much else, unless you consider shark attacks and ocean disasters.

I live in the Sacramento area now, I'm sure it's known for something... tongue.gif

TANNER'S MOM replied: ARKANSAS

Where I am from.. is where President Clinton went to college. He actually rear ended my cousin once and didn't want to pay the damages and they had to get lawyers involved..lol

I love on the highest Mountain in my country. It's called Pinnacle Mtn. Beautiful.

We have diamonds that grow in a state park.. you can dig and keep them if you find them.

We are the Natural State.. one of the only places where if we were closed off from the outside world we could function like our country. We have all the food, water, vegatables, cotton etc to be self suffient.

Our main industry is CHICKEN

I love my state.. it's a very pretty state.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I live in 'America's largest community of brick homes'

I know I have more but thats what first came to my mind

My2Beauties replied: OK let's see

#1 Home of the Kentucky Derby, The Oaks and the Breeder's Cup, this is a huge horse racing town, tons of celebs come to town during the Derby and Breeder's Cup

#2 A haunted sanitorium called Waverly Hills is here in Louisville, it's been on TV several times and is one of the 10 most haunted sites on in the United States, it's one of those places on VH1's Celebreality thing where they go to the haunted places and try to find the spirits

#3 Abraham Lincoln was born about 1 hour (I think) away from here in Hodgensville, Ky (I think is the name of the city)

#4 Rick Pitino used to be the basketball coach for the University of Kentucky, their biggest rival is University of Louisville (my alma mater - sp?), he left UofK to coach the pros for a while and then came back and accepted a job at UofL, so he's coached the two biggest rival schools, it's one of the biggest basketball rivals in college sports!

#5 Speaking of interstates, Louisville only has one exit off of one interstate to the left and that's it. When I visit other large cities, I see way more than that, usually. I don't think they have any in Nashville though, I may be wrong.

There is probably more, but I don't know of anything else.

punkeemunkee'smom replied:

HAHA!!! That was just too funny! rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif Did you put that in there just for me to laugh at??? rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif

Ellie replied: Let's see which ones I can remember
Mission Control is here
Houston is only one of 5 cities in the U.S. that have a standing year-long opera, symphony, ballet and theatre
The Astrodome was the first indoor sports stadium a.k.a. the Eighth Wonder of the World
The largest medical center in the world is located here

There are a bunch more.

Calimama replied:
Wow.. diamonds. Clearly I live in the wrong spot. Have you ever looked for one? tongue.gif

mom2my2cuties replied:
We have a few exits that head off to the left here I think. Like off of ummm 24/40/400 that area. smile.gif

mom2my2cuties replied: Mel you are very right about Arkansas. It is a beautiful state.

It ALSO has the best transplant unit in the world at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

The diamond park is awesome smile.gif recently one lady found a massive diamond that gained national attention. What they do is take a bulldozer, and dig out a trench and over turn the dirt. It is nothing to find a smaller diamond, the larger ones are few and far between.

Also I believe the State Capitol building is the only one in the US that a smaller but almost exact replica of the White House (or US Capitol building one)

danahas4monkeys replied: Hmmm well lets see we have one of the top party schools in the country ( Ohio University) , we have a haunted former mental hospital they used to do tours but too many people freaked out (The Ridges) now my itty bitty town i live in is where Sarah Jessica Parker grew up or was born , one or the other lol. we have a pizza place liquor store or church on every block just about. hmm thats about it from this little corner of ohio!

redchief replied: Hmmm... Not much comes to mind.

We have one of the few remainng areas of natural sand dunes on the east coast, but the greedy real estate developers have pretty much destroyed those too.

A&A'smommy replied:
I was actually just about to do some research on that place my best friends mother (she might as well be my mother too) is from there and has told her daughter about it because we are incredibly interested in things like that (the history) and she wants to visit it so I think we are going to make a trip up there sometime in the next year (she has family from there too).

Lets see my town

2. We have a huge celebration for 4th of july too

3. Andy Phillips is from the town I am from he is Yankees baseball player (if you look at his biographery its not the same as his birthtown)I am friends with his sister and his picture is all over our town we are very proud of him
