Any moms out there using birth control? - Any type of BC at all!!
Daniels Mommy wrote: My dh and I tried the minipill when ds was younger but my milk went down (even though it's supposed to be safe to use while nursing!) and the prescription cost was so high -- there is no generic for it!!
Basically what we do now is a mix of NFP (Natural Family Planning) and condoms. My DR wants me to get the Mirena IUD but it's so expensive and my current insurance won't cover it fully
CCTandME replied: I take the mini pill. They do have a generic now. Mine costs about $30 at the Walmart pharmacy.
A&A'smommy replied: I'm on the shot but when Alyssa was first born I was on the mini pill (because I was suppose to be breastfeeding but thats another story).
booey2 replied: We use condoms here and have done so successfully for over 15 years. We have 2 children (by choice) and rely soley on condoms with spermicidal lubricant as our method of BC.
Daniels Mommy replied: Oh I wish I could use the spermicide....I have an allergy to it! Not sure what about it gives me a rash, though! Same with the foam. We thought it was a latex allergy at first, but found out later that it was to the spermicide. Eh, condoms and NFP work for us!!
MomToMany replied: Well, I'm on nothing. We'll take our chances .
Mommy2BAK replied: Same here!
ediep replied: I am on the pill
Daniels Mommy replied: I think my husband would have a stroke if I said I wanted to go off of all birth control and just wing it!! As fertile as we both appear to be (every 3 cycles I ovulate with two eggs) we'd probably have a dozen kids!! Unfortunately, I had a very large baby and retained a lot of fluid so I'm scared about future pregnancies and what they will do to my body!! I had to have a c-section because after 47+ hours of labor I still had not fully progressed! The DR feels certain that if some things change next pregnancy I should have no trouble with a VBAC.
But I digress....
Taiyou no Koe replied: I would think you're lucky that your insurance will cover at least part of the IUD costs? (If I'm not mistaken.)
Which would you rather pay for: pills every month that cost $35 (using them an estimated 2-3 years minimum) would cost in the long run $1260 (just for 3 years!). Or an IUD, which costs $200-300 as a one-time-only fee?
An IUD is way more cost-effective, and equally reliable compared to the Pill/Shot/Patch. Plus you can't forget to "take your IUD everyday".
I plan to get the Mirena IUD after my delivery. I am lucky Medicaid is covering the cost, but even if they WEREN'T, I know for a fact money would be found to pay for it.
coasterqueen replied: We've just used condoms since having Kylie. Before that I was on the regular pill. I tried the mini pill for a bit of time after having Kylie but just wasn't good about taking it so I quit.
I told Dh after Megan arrives I really don't want to go ever go back on any birth control so he has a choice of condoms, having more kids naturally planned, or he can get fixed...I'm not going to because I feel it's a privelage I've been given.
TANNER'S MOM replied: Well I used the pill, until I had a tubal. But just wanted to mention that most Health Dept offer BC. Of your choice, including IUD. In our local area the cost is based on your income. I remember being young and it costing $2.00 per month.
The worst part is the waiting in line there. But I would call them and just see what they have to offer. Or maybe a planned parenthood in your area??
texasp3 replied: Hmmm... does having had my tubes tied count?
I took the pill for years, but developed increasing problems with BP... that combined with my "advanced age" eliminated the pill, the patch, the shots... any of that stuff. It was frustrating for a few years because I didn't really want an IUD and that didn't leave a lot of choices. We used condoms successfully... well, as in I didn't get pregnant until we wanted a baby.
I've never had a health insurance policy that covered birth control and I consider that the worst sort of bean-counting short-sightedness! Agh.. don't get me started on that topic.
maestra replied: I got the mirena after Jaci and am getting a new one at my 6 week visit. With my ins., there is a 30 co-pay, still much cheaper than the pill for the 5 years it's good for. And I loved it!
Kila replied: Defintiely check out Planned Parenthood if they are around. I remember when I didn't have insurance I went to there and the BC is dirt cheap.
hotmommy818 replied: My doctor advised the same IUD. He said that it is VERY effective for 5 years. Given the amount of BC pills you'd have to buy over 5 years, you'd probably come out cheaper with the IUD. If you get it done, ask your DR's office if they have a payment plan in place. Also, my DR said that it can cause severe cramping the day of, so be sure to take something before--I believe he said 800mg of ibuprofen. I'm getting it---I'm allergic to latex, spermicide, and cannot take the pill or shots because they elevate my blood pressure. It's either the IUD or nothing! Good luck!
AmyO replied: I scheduled my husband a vasectomy
kimberley replied: we are using the rhythm method now (not very effective but that is okay ) but i was on the depo shot from 8wks post partum for 6 months. no milk supply problems, no problems at all actually. i would use it again if i had to. and it was about $50CDN for the shot so that works out to be about $17/mo.... not bad.
