Anybody ever waitress??
DillsMommy wrote: After almost 4 and a half years I think I'm going to quit my job, at the assisted living home, and look for a new one. My sister works at Applebee's and told her manager I may be interested in working there and he said-- send her in, we'll give her a job! So I've been thinking about going there to waitress, all though I feel a little ridiculous since I'm 25, it's not like I'm in highschool anymore. But it's pretty much a guaranteed job as long as they are willing to work with me on my hours. So I can do that until something else comes up. Anyways, my question is-- is waitressing hard? I have the WORST memory ever and I can just see myself forgetting orders all the time. Or I might be a hostess (thats what my sis does) but I thought being a waitress I can make some pretty good tips.
Boys r us replied: I waited tables in college! You'll catch on quick and you can't beat the money as far as comparative jobs are concerned.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I am the Rachel Green of waitresses, so you don't want to ask me. I'm more of a hostess type gal.
grandma replied: No, waitressing isn't hard if your smart, which you appear to be. They will train you and as long as you know to take care of your tables, your tips will be sweet! The nicer the resturant, the better the tips. I've waitressed (years ago) and made really good money. Plus it's great exercise!
mom2my2cuties replied: I have thought about this too - since I really do hate my job But wondering if it would be worth it.
I think the tips would be enough incentive to keep at it though. I know a friend of mine makes really good money waiting tables
amynicole21 replied: I was the worst waitress ever... EVER! My memory sucked and I did forget everything. Plus, I couldn't hold the trays that fancy way with one hand, so I almost dropped everything several times. Horrid!
Plus, I get stressed out easily. Not a good line of work for me
That said, I think you would probably do fine - there's just a learning curve.
DillsMommy replied: Oh no! That sounds just like me!
luvmykids replied: I did, and bartended too. I loved them both. There will always be a PITA here and there but for the most part people were great and it was a lot of fun. I think Applebees would be a great place to start rather than some fancy place where people expect you to put their napkin in their lap for them
The money was good too And I loved that I didn't have to take it home with me, didn't spend my time off thinking of the stress I had tomorrow and all that.
DillsMommy replied: My sister just loves it there. She says it's a great enviroment, everybody gets along and it's really fun. I do like taking care of the elderly, but I think it's time to work with people my own age again.
Sarah&Mackenzie replied: Yes I did for may years and I liked it! Don't over think it and you will do fine!
lisar replied: I was a waitress and it wasnt hard until you get some picky a-hole customer. Thats when its "HARD" to keep your mouth shut and not throw the food all over them.
CantWait replied: I did that, and bartended at the same time. As for as being a waitress, one is only as good as his/her co-workers. If you guys work as a team, you'll have no problem. Just remember to always smile.
Swood75 replied: Yes,I was a server at a place called Fatz Cafe (kind of like Applebees) and the tips were good "sometimes"..I got highly pi**ed a couple times as I took VERY good care of people and they STIFFED me and used my table for like 2+ hrs..I won't EVER go back to waiting tables again..I am getting to be less of a people person as far as waiting on them..Don't have the patience anymore to deal with people..Oh,plus the operator (owner or whatever he is) was the BIGGEST A## there ever was to work for....
austins mom replied: I would say it all depends on the person. Some people can do it some cant. I would say dont wuit your job just yet. Go talk to the people at Applebees and start out working on the weekends to see if you like it. Then you still have a job to fall back on if you dont.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Yes, I did it all through college and a little while after I graduated. It was good money and fun in the social sense. I personally don't think 25 is too old to be doing it, but I will say that the hours suck, especially if you have kids. I've worked in high turn-over restaurants, which Applebee's will be, to high-end restaurants where people sit for hours. They both have there good and bad. I do think that if you have never been in any type of food service job before though, it's always best to start hostessing or cashier first, then work your way up. It gives you a better sense of how the restaurant business works, you have time to learn the menu (which is key), and you still get paid tips.
bawoodsmall replied: Yes and I love waitressing. I have actually really thought about going back to it. As Rae said the hours kinda suck but it depends on how you look at it. For instance most restaraunts here youwould be working nights wich means you would have all day with the kids and wouldnt have to leave them with a sitter or anything. It really isnt hard imo but it would be good if you could give it a trial basis first.
kimberley replied: use a notepad for orders if ur worried about forgetting. the systems i worked with you could "nickname" your guests so if i didn't know their names, i'd put... purple shirt guy, big hair lady, etc lol. just make sure it doesn't print on the bill
i started hostessing and coat check when i was 17yo and just stopped bartending last year. it's great money for short hours and you can make it fun. give it a shot. good luck!!
holley79 replied: My aunt has been a waitress for Cracker barrel for a VERY long time. I don't think age should be anything to think about when it comes to it.
I never waitressed but I bartended. Loved it and loved the money. Memorial Day weekend at PCola beach I would easily make 1000.00 for the weekend. I was offered to come out this May but we are going to be cruising or I would. Good money and it's fairly easy.
Insanemomof3 replied: 25 too old for waitressing? I guess I am an idiot then lol Last time I waitressed or was a bartender was a few months ago. And I am 32. I didn't know there was an age thing?
I love it, I think it is a lot of fun
