Anybody know what this is?

Crystalina wrote: It grows on a bush of some sort. I'm assuming they only turn this red in the fall because right now they are everywhere and for some reason I've never noticed them before. I collected a huge basket full this past weekend and now I have them hanging to dry. I just put it in front of my pine so you could see it better but it has nothing to do with the pine. I just want to make sure it's not poison of some sort. I'm sure it's fine but I don't know what it is. happy.gif

It sure is pretty though.

Hold on. It won't let me add the photo on here for some reason. BRB. rolleyes.gif

A&A'smommy replied: what does it grow from? a tree, bush?

Crystalina replied:
It's more of a bush I would say. I'll try to get a photo of what it looks like before I pick it. If I'm not mistaken it's more brown and turns red as fall comes in. I'm pretty sure it's a bush. I mean some of them are pretty darn tall. I'll get a pic before the sun goes down. I have to drive down the road. happy.gif

The one in the pic I already posted was picked over the weekend and I found it laying in the yard. Izabella wanted to keep it but never brought it in the house so they hold up pretty well because after it was cut it's just been laying there and it's still as pretty as when I picked it.

Calimama replied: I don't know but it's pretty!

Crystalina replied: I'll have to get that pic tomorrow. The in-laws are coming over.

My3LilMonkeys replied: Are the red things soft and kinda fuzzy?

Crystalina replied: Oh! I also wanted to add that the berry-type things are very sticky when you touch them. They feel like velvet but leave a stickyness on your fingers.

Crystalina replied:
I must have posted when you did. emlaugh.gif Yes they are.

Do you know what it is???? smile.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: I'm 99% sure they're from a sumac tree. There are 2 kinds of sumac, poisonous and non-poisonous, and the red soft fuzzy stuff grows on the non poisonous trees. The leaves on the bush/tree should be long and skinny.

Crystalina replied:
Oh dear Lord your right!!!! Here is exactly what it looks like before I picked it!!!

DH is highly allergic to sumac. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif He's the one who picked it and gathered it for me and so far he's ok so it must not be the poison kind. OMG, he would have killed me if it were. ohmy.gif blink.gif happy.gif

:ETA: I'm off to find out more about this kind. thumb.gif

Crystalina replied: Ok then. I've learned that I can dry it and make it into powder for meats and salads. I can dry it and extract juice from the berries to make sumac-aid or indian aide. And if mixed with tobacco I can smoke it right up. rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

lisar replied:
Let me know how that works out. LOL
