Anybody up for a challenge?

mckayleesmom wrote: I was brousing around for recipe's and I see alot of 5 dollar meal idea sites, but none of them look appealing to me that they had listed. Anybody have any good 5 dollar recipe's? I thought it would be a neat way for us to save some money if we incorperate it into our shopping plans...

I'm trying to think of some...

All I have is grilled cheese... rolling_smile.gif

Bread $1.15
Cheese $2.50 if you can find it on sale or buy generic
Can of tomato soup to dip it in...$1.50

TOTAL : 5.15

Most of us already have butter on hand...whalla

AlexsPajamaMama replied: Oh cool idea!

momofone replied: i have been buying pizza bagels from the grocery store 4 for a 1.99 my daughter loves them. happy.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: pasta (anykind) .99 (on sale)
sauce 1.99 (store kind and add some additonal seasonings if you want that you already have)

=2.98

and if you want to add garlic bread 1.99 on sale

= 4.97

PrairieMom replied: Per meal or per serving?

MommyToAshley replied:
Ours would be $7.97 then because you'd have to add $3 for the lb of ground beef. smile.gif But, then I also add fresh onions, green peppers, and tomatoes. That's where it starts to add up. I'd probably serve with a salad too... so again, the fresh vegetables get expensive. I think that's my problem is that I serve salad or fresh vegetables with about every meal.

stella6979 replied: Kielbasa $2.99, sauerkraut $1.00, 1 can of beer $1.20 = $5.20. thumb.gif

jem0622 replied: Hot Dogs (on sale) - 2.50
box of mac'n'cheese (generic) - .33

Cut up the cooked dogs and put them in the mac n cheese

can of veggies - .60-.70

3.53

Calimama replied: I cant think of anything. rolling_smile.gif

jem0622 replied: 1 lb of ground turkey - 2.50-3.00
1 can of condensed milk - .50-.60
1 pack of onion soup powder - 2.03 for box, 1.01 for one packet

4.01 for easy meatloaf! Add whatever starch is in your pantry (rice, instant potatoes)

Room for a can of veggies!

jem0622 replied: Can of tuna - 1.03
Can of cream of mushroom (or celery or chicken) - 1.68
Box of elbow macaroni - 1.00 (if your store has them 10 for 10)
Cup of milk - already on hand

3.71

Still room for a can of veggies smile.gif

stella6979 replied: 1 can of small refrigerator biscuits, $1.50
1 cup or so of grated mozzarella cheese, $1.00
1 cup spaghetti sauce, $1.00

Open biscuit can and pull apart each biscuit into one or two peices. Toss the peices with the spaghetti sauce (or pizza sauce) in a casserole dish (I use a 9x9 to make it deep dish). Press down on the mixture a little with a spoon. Put cheese on top and whatever toppings you'd like. Put in oven at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes.
You can also improvise this....make it a taco casserole with salsa, taco cheese and some canned chilis. Makes about 3 large servings.

luvmykids replied: 15 bean soup mix 1.59
pkg of diced ham 1.50

Polish sausage 3.00
lrg can bbq beans 1.20

MyLilAngel replied: Never really thought about how much I spent for pasta.

Pasta strings (usually bow tie)--$1.00 per box....only need one
Pasta--$2.50
Ground Sausage--$1.99 (usually on sale)

I would have to save money else where bc food would not do it in our house
6 to 8 ppl. sometimes 9 makes it very ruff plus dairy of any kind is out also.

but it seems like it can be done with a smaller family and very small children thumb.gif

jem0622 replied:

We are a family of 6 and these types of things work out. You can always add bread and butter!

luvmykids replied:
I definitely can't get away with meals like this when DH is home, but when it's just me and the kids (which is most of the time) all I have to do is add a veggie, and we're good.

And it seems like no matter how hard I try, I can't cut back on dairy. Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc....we go through that stuff so fast.

HuskerMom replied:
Dh would go for that!!

holley79 replied: This is pretty good. Never gave it much though in the past. We do a lot of shopping at the commissary so I find all kinds of good meal deals

ZandersMama replied: I know it sounds gross but my kids devour this and its cheap for the bad weeks

box of KD 1.39
can of spicy pizza sauce .99
can of veggies .99

make the KD, dont add the milk though, and mix the pizza sauce and the can veggies in. The boys seriously inhale this smile.gif

CantWait replied:
Same here, I have to have either one serving of vegetables with every meal w/ a salad, or two servings of vegetables.

luvmykids replied:
I have this in the oven right now! thumb.gif
