Anyone successfully gotten out of - a cellphone contract?

amynicole21 wrote: I hate hate hate my cell provider (AT&T) and am stuck in a contract with them for 2 years! I didn't realize when I bought my Blackberry a few weeks ago that you couldn't even CONNECT to the internet without buying their blackberry package. I figured I could use the regular internet pkg that is just $4.99. Nope! Gotta pay at least $29.99 on top of any calling plans. growl.gif

I could get the whole kit and kaboodle at T-Mobile for about $49.99. rolleyes.gif

That's what I menitonned the other day about the data plan.... i had to get it because it was new, but dh didn't have to because he upgraded. It's expensive, and stupid.

boyohboyohboy replied: i got out of one from sprint once, but had to pay the fee to end it...
it was expensive.
maybe you could try contacting a senior management and explain that you didnt know what you had gotten into, and work out a deal?

coasterqueen replied: Nope, never. I have AT&T. I'm the second phone on our home plan, so I only pay $9.99 for my Treo phone calls and then $29.99 + $5 a month for data and text - but work pays the two latter charges. blush.gif

holley79 replied: Nope I have Celluar One YEARS ago and had to pay to get out of mine. dry.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: I got out of Verizon h*LL (as I like to call it) a year ago when they stopped taking the service charges off my bill. I was getting a roam charge from my house and they always took it off until I re upped for the next 2 years. Magically~ they were real butts overnight. growl.gif My husband wrote them a letter on his law firm's stationary and they suddenly got cooperative. I got out with no penalty.

MommyToAshley replied: We could get out of ours if we wanted to because we are having an issue with our service from our home location. There is a problem with the tower near us and we've given them 5 months to fix it. They have a note from the supervisor on our account that we can cancel at any time without any penalty. However, we have not done so because they are not charging us for using the roaming at home (phone service works fine on roaming) and giving us the free data plan until they get it fixed. It's an ok solution for now, but if it is not fixed soon, we will get out of the contract.

yeah I tried to warn the ppl. that buy those just a few weeks ago

Nope you have to pay like 200.00 plus to get out of the contract well with Nextel you do and if its a business contract its per phone

With Nextel you buy a new phone the contract gets extened on the whole account blink.gif

amynicole21 replied:
Yep, that's what happened with me. I think we found a loophole... we can cancel before 10/14 somehow because it's a new contract. Got to get the legalities worked out first tho wink.gif

jcc64 replied: When my father died(!), Verizon wouldn't let my mother cancel the contract unless she produced an "acceptable" death certificate. They weren't nice about it, either. Here my mother was, days after her husband died, fighting with a cell phone company. It was surreal.

MommyToAshley replied:
That is aweful! ohmy.gif
I've heard a lot of horrible cell phone stories, but that is the worst. I am sorry your Mom had to deal with that. Did they apologize afterwards?

My3LilMonkeys replied: I've been told it's very rare - but it's worth a shot and you may get lucky - we got out of our AT&T contract years ago by agreeing to sign a 4 year (twice the normal) contract with Nextel and they paid our termination fee for us.

We recently got out of our Nextel contract by switching to Sprint. Since they're now partners we paid no termination fees, no activation fees and got 3 free phones - between all the fees and the phones, the total amount saved was over $1000.00.

Always be nice, and it never hurts to ask!

gr33n3y3z replied:
OMG thats great I wish you luck and pass on the info when you get through everything thumb.gif

grapfruit replied:
I was just going to suggest that! Typically all cell phone companies have a "free look" period where you can cancel w/no penalty. I was thinking either 14 or 30 days...
