Anyone wanna help me - creative letter i need today!

moped wrote: Here is the scoop:

At thi s company you are awarded holidays by the number of years service in the industry, according to my resume I had 9 years, but didn't put the first company I worked at because it was too long of a resume and because it didn't seem relevant to my current job - WELL it is - and it could get me another weeks holidays......

I have started a letter, but it doesn't sound right........anyone wanna help me.

I can post what I have on here if you like........

momofone replied: Sure lets see what you have so far.

moped replied: Well i don't like the way it sounds at all - I am technical, not creative........

Upon accepting the job offer at ARC Resources, I questioned the number of weeks holidays because I have always had 4 weeks. I was informed that entitlement of holidays were based on the number of years of industry service. I currently have 3 weeks holidays.

I am attaching an updated copy of my resume. In 1999 I was employed at Real Resources as their receptionist. I apologize that this was not on my resume because it did not seem relevant to my current position in Operations.

I would appreciate you reviewing my current holiday entitlement if possible. I understand if…………..

Basically, they don't know if they can help me but if I can make this sound good it might be more in my favor......

cameragirl21 replied: Dear Boss:
I am writing this letter with regard to the holiday time we are awarded here. As you may be aware, my resume (which I've attached to this letter) lists the nine years of service I've put into this industry. However, I left out my first job, which is also in this industry in the interest of keeping my resume brief enough to catch employers' interest and also because it was so long ago that I didn't feel it was relevent to the skills I have and what I have to offer to this company or any company. However, it's now been brought to my attention that the extra time I put into this industry in that first job would allot me an extra week of holiday a year.
As a mother to two young children who works full time out of the house, I am sure one could understand how precious holiday time is as it's the only time I really can devote full time to my children. I absolutely love my job and can't imagine being home full time but the breaks I get to be home with my children are crucial and very much appreciated, not only by myself but also by my children whom I hope will not grow up to remember me working away from home all the time.
That said, I am asking if you would consider taking into account my first job, the details of which I'll list below, along with a reference as proof that I worked there and grant me the extra week of holiday each year. I would greatly appreciate your attention to this matter.
Thank you,
Moped

That is just what I wanted to say but didn't know how!

THANK YOU!

I'm in the process of writing a book so a letter's a piece of cake. wink.gif
Good luck with it, let us know if you get it. happy.gif

DVFlyer replied: Have you talked to your boss in person?

"Hey Bob. I didn't include my first job on my resume since it was getting lengthy. I just found out I can get an extra week's vacation for the time I was employed there. Should I write a letter to explain it or is there another way to handle it?"

msoulz replied:
That sounds much easier.

I am always hesitant to mention the family in these things. Jennifer's letter is obviously well written but I would nix the family part UNLESS the boss is a family person and would warm to that. Some "business" folks get put off by what looks like attempts to use one's personal life to get more from the company.

Hehe, this is Canada, not the US, where they give 1 year maternity leaves. Only in the US is work expected to come before family and are moms expected to put 6-12 week old babies in daycare to rush back to work. rolleyes.gif

moped replied:
That is what i told him yesterday and he said "Do up a formal letter with your resume and I will talk to VP and HR" - LOLOL

moped replied: This company is ALL ABOUT family and personal health and wellness - so I think I will keep the poor me working mom thing wink.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Yep, you lost me at the family part. I literally quit reading it. I would leave that out.

moped replied: I did change a bit of the mother part............to one little sentence

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Well, you know the company better than I do.............. biggrin.gif

I think they will give you the extra week. hug.gif That's a pretty cool policy.

jcc64 replied: Dear Boss,
As per your instruction, I am writing to formally request the additional vacation time to which I may be entitled based on time served at a previous job in a related industry. In the interest of brevity, I omitted my prior experience from my initial resume, but would now like to modify it to include the necessary details, recommendations, references, etc…from the aforementioned job so they can be considered in relation to any forthcoming vacation time.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Resume attached.

I would leave out all the personal stuff about your kids and your family. Everyone wants and needs extra vacation time, not just working moms, and any job related requests should be based solely on professional considerations, not personal ones. Employers can't base decision on who does or doesn't have kids--it's discrimination. Keep your letter short and sweet, and stick to the relevant facts only. I worked in the private sector for twenty years, dh is a vp who deals with these sorts of things all the time; trust me, I know from whence I speak.

moped replied:
Very True! Let me re vamp a wee bit

moped replied:
Aimee, the oil and gas industry is so unstable (4 jobs in 6 years) that a lot of companies are using industry experience because there is no pension or RSP savings (we do that ourselves) so they have programs like this and they offer a higher salary and stock options which can be quite financially beneficial!

MommyToAshley replied:
I agree, leave the personal stuff out. Short and to the point. thumb.gif

Good luck, I hope you get the extra week's vacation.
