Appliance questions - Should I be worried?

When I turn the heater up sometimes it smells "hot", kwim? Does everyones do that or does something just need to be cleaned or is something dangerous?
And on the stove, (gas) sometimes the thing clicks forever and nothing happens and then the flame bursts out really big even if it's on low, does that make sense? Something to worry about?
And when I use the oven I always smell gas when I first turn it on and it heats up, problem?
I ask DH and he says "I dunno"
ilovemybaby replied: I would phone the appropriate places and just ask them. Better to be on the safe side KWIM? Anything like that freaks me out.
When I lived with my parents one day I went to turn on the electric blanket on my bed and the wire suddenly sparked so I turned it off and unplugged it. That freaked me out. So lucky it happened when I was turning it on and not in the middle of the night. My parents were forever telling me to turn the thing off before going to bed. I used to turn it on about an hour before I went to bed and leave it on all night and then sometimes I'd forget about it in the morning so it would be on all day.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: As far as the heater, I would maybe just check your vents...maybe they just need a cleaning. The smell may be dust burning.
I always smell a bit of gas from a gas stove, but it shouldn't be super strong of course. I believe most gas stoves shouldn't take awhile to click on. It should spark right away with a crisp/clean flame, not a major pop, but I'm no expert. Maybe get on the manufacturers website and see if there is a hotline you can call for questions.
luvmykids replied: I think it's worth checking out, at least to know everything is ok. Thanks!
kimberley replied: same thing happens here with the heat when it has been off for a while.. i think Rae is right about dust burning. you may need a cleaning.
as for the stove, i'd have it checked. maybe your started is going or something cuz it should go on the first or second click. mine used to and it was ancient.
also, do you have carbon monoxide detectors in the house? if you don't.. get some. if you do, good job keep us posted.
NEWMOM05 replied: My gas stove does the same thing. t's brand new and it's done it since we got it. I smell a little bit of gas and it clicks forever sometimes it seems. We do have a Carbon Monoxide Detector in our house, so I don't really worry.
luvmykids replied: We do (whew!) I just worry if the clicking and ignition would cause some kind of explosion (I did say I'm paranoid now, right? ) Anyway, I'm getting the carpets cleaned next week and am going to add the duct and vent cleaning and am calling Sears tomorrow just to have them come check the oven/stove.
Brias3 replied: I'm not too sure on what could be the causes but good idea to check and be sure!
C&K*s Mommie replied: I hope it turns out to be safe. I understand your paranoia with explosions, but I hope it is something minor like the starter as Kimberley said. I hope it is nothing unsafe.
gr33n3y3z replied: The burners prolly needs to be cleaned near the clicker thing not sure of the stove you have just take off the grates and then the round disks that sit on the top that the flame comes out of. You will see under neith maybe some rust is there or the clicker might have a little something on it. Use something like a little wire brush to get the rust and the crosion *Sp? off When I use my oven I get the same smell also then its gone when the flame comes on. And this is what NEW Technology has for us If you rather have someone do it for you I dont blame you at all
Edited for the heater lol
All heaters should be serviced and cleaned once a year I think it is and its usually before you use it for the winter.
Ed will see this and change something lol
Kaitlin'smom replied: I have no clue about the stove never had a gas one. but the furnace should be cleaned yearly ours is now since we put a new one in 02 even then if its been off for a while it can smell hot
coasterqueen replied: No clue on the stove. As far as the heater, have you changed the filters recently?
