Artwork ideas

coasterqueen wrote: I am still working on my master bedroom. I have all my bedding done (pictures shown before). I have a few turquoise pieces in my room. I got my new brown suede chair the other night. I have one black piece in the room. What I have left is to change the ceiling fan out (it's brass and we want silver or black), need new artwork, a few more accents, a rug, and a black dresser of some sort to replace an oak bookcase I have in there. Then it's done! The room is really feeling more warm and calm. Even DH commented that the room feels like "home". Whereas before it just felt like a room, not very inviting.

SO, I found one piece of abstract artwork that has browns, blacks, creams, and turquoise all in a black frame. Perfect for the room. So I bought it. Now I can't seem to find anything else that would match. My bedroom furniture is mission style, the bedding and decor is contempo. I know I mix and match a lot. blush.gif The one piece of artwork is contempo for sure.

Anyone got any ideas for other artwork? I can't find any more contempo pieces with turquoise in it. I did find some but they are flowers. Ick! That's too girly. I want something neutral that Dh and I both like - hence why I went with an abstract piece.

Below is an abstract piece that is similar to what I bought, but the one I bought had more rich colors to it and much more defined.

HELP! tongue.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: honestly what I would love to do in our room is frame some of kaitlins painting they are very abstract and I could littlery stare at them for hours.

okay that was probably not much help, but my suggestion was to have the girls do some paintings with those colors.

amynicole21 replied: Have the girls paint one - lol! Or maybe buy some fabric and stretch it over a piece of wood and frame it? I tend to like more "concrete" artwork than painted - maybe you could just get some carved wood pieces or something?

ETA - Di, you and I think alike wink.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Since my room is done with similar colors, I'll tell you what I have. I actually did not go with abstract art, but simple art sketches. Artists like Degas, Matisse...figure sketches. I love Matisse's sketches of people sleeping. We have two over our bed framed in cherry wood frames. The sketches are very soft and peaceful to me, and the dark frames make them pop. You could also add black and white (or sepia) photos of the girls. This would be contemporary, yet if you picked sepia, it would pull in the browns/tans in your room. Just some ideas. I would leave the turquoise for accent accessories like a really pretty tuquoise glass vase on top of your dresser or some candles.

ETA: I bought a lot of my prints online at AllPosters.com. Good prices IMO.

coasterqueen replied: Rae, you make a good point. I had wanted to do sepia or black and white photos in the room, but wasn't for sure which direction to go. I feel like I'm throwing a bunch of different things together. I'm terrible at decorating. rolleyes.gif blush.gif

luvmykids replied: If it's done right, I love mixing styles thumb.gif So far I think you're doing great!! smile.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Thanks. The key is "doing it right" - which I don't do well.

I bought a buffet style table for my foyer since it's right by the kitchen. I wanted somewhere to put some of my glass stuff and display it. I fell in love with this more "traditional" piece and the guy said "you are more contempo with things in your home so I wouldn't do the traditional". I bought it anyways. I plan to throw a contemporary rug in front of it, with some clean-lined type lamps on it and it will look good, I think. tongue.gif

grapfruit replied: How about some pictures! (Of the room and stuff)

luvmykids replied:
That is a key IMHO, buying what you LOVE regardless of the style. I bet your buffet will look great once you're all done.

coasterqueen replied: Yes, I will post pictures once I'm pretty much finished. I'm having trouble finding a rug for the master and for the foyer. The rug in my foyer is very traditional and I don't like it, even with the new traditional piece in there.

I need to have a yard sale now with all the stuff I have not in use now. tongue.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
I completely agree! I think mix and match is great - otherwise (IMO) it looks too much like a showroom or model home. Just have fun and buy what you like! It shows more of your personal style anyway.

A friend of mine just sold a ton of her furniture on craigslist.com...just an fyi. wink.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Oooh Craigs List. I didn't even think of that. Thanks Rae!
