August Rush - Awesome family film
jcc64 wrote: My dh insisted that we all go to see this film together last night. Keep in mind that at this point, we rarely do everything en masse anymore- the older kids have their own agendas now. To tell you the truth, I was pretty ambilavent about it, thinking it would be over Corey's head and too corny for the boys. Well, I was partly right- my budding cynic of a 12 yo was annoyed by some of it, though secretly, I think he enjoyed it too. Corey absolutely loved it- and there was not a princess in sight. It's a film that requires a suspension of disbelief- that is, it is unrealistic in the same way that "Pretty Woman" was unrealistic. I mean, would a multi- gazillionaire hedge fund guy ever really marry a streetwalker?! However, if you can allow yourself to view it as a fairytale of sorts, or a fable with modern characters, setting, and plot devices, you will thoroughly enjoy it, particularly if you appreciate the power of music, creativity, and family. It was one of those movies that stick with you for awhile, kwim? Dh is a musician, and I'm sure that made it more appealing, but I'm really glad he insisted we all see it. So, do yourselves a favor- go see this sweet little movie with your kids. You won't regret it- and this is coming from one of the most cynical people you will probably ever "meet".
maestra replied: My mom saw it too and said that it was a wonderful film. I can't wait to see it!
My3LilMonkeys replied: I've not heard of it - what is it about?
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Jeanne, how was "felicity" in it...Carrie something? Was she good? Because I don't know, she sorta kills it for me.
luvmykids replied: Thanks for the recommendation
Rae, do you mean Carrie Russell?
amynicole21 replied: Sounds great! Will wait for DVD though - can't even begin to imagine the horrors of taking both girls to the theater
stella6979 replied: I can't wait to see this movie. I wasn't sure if it would be any good so thanks for the review.
jcc64 replied: Actually, it's really worth seeing it in the theatre, if you can swing it. The way it's shot, in conjunction with the "bigness" of the music, I think would lose some of its impact on DVD, though seeing it that way is better than not at all. It stars Keri Russell (yes, from Felicity) and Jonathan Rhys something- a British actor with a lovely mouth who I've seen previously in Woody Allen's "Match Point" with Scarlet Johansen(been on HBO alot lately). The movie is about a dreamy little boy living in an orphanage who never gives up hope of finding his parents one day. They, Felicity and the British dude, were both professional musicians, she a classical cellist, and he, an indie rocker who meet and have a magical one night stand, during which this kid is conceived. Without giving away the whole plot away, his becoming an orphan was through no fault of their own, and the movie is about all their separate attempts to reunite with one another, threaded together by the overwhelming power of music they all unknowingly share. The child actor, Freddie Highmore, or something like that, is captivating. I thought Keri Russell was luminous in it, for whomever asked about her. But, I have always liked her, so maybe I'm biased. Don't you think they should be paying me to do publicity?
Cece00 replied: Jonathan Rhys Meyers is also in "The Tudors" on HBO (or Showtime? I cant remember), he plays Henry VIII, he's great.
And the boy is from "Arthur & the Invisibles".
MommyToAshley replied: Thanks for the review. And it comes at a good time ... we were thinking about going to see a matinee sometime this weekend if we could fit it in.
