Avatar blew my mind - go see this movie

jcc64 wrote: I am no sci-fi/fantasy fan, and James Cameron's Titanic-sized ego is pretty hard to take. But I have to say, this movie is AMAZING! I implore you to see it on the big screen, and in 3D if at all possible. It's unlike anything you've ever seen before. Seriously. I took Corey (age 7), not knowing if it would overwhelm her, and she, too, LOVED it. She said it's her favorite movie, ever. Don't wait to see it at home--it's the kind of thing you have to see on the big screen.

luvmykids replied: Wow, that good huh? We just got home from seeing The Blind Side (great flick!)...I vetoed Avatar because I am SO not into alien stuff of any kind but now I may have to drag us all back to the theater happy.gif

luvbug00 replied: so like not to spoil the entire thing but i have yet to understand even the basic plot of this movie. I have no doubt it is probaly wonderful to the eye but I'm more of a plot kind of person.
so umm what is it about..basic??

amymom replied:
I have not seen it but heard that it's plot is alot like the Pocahontas story with aliens.

mummy2girls replied: Marcus wants to see this. we did get 2 movie passes for christmas so we may just have to go see it. Im not really a sci fi fan so will it be worth it for me to go or should he go alone...

DVFlyer replied: I keep hearing good things about it, but most say you have to see it in 3D. Nothing against 3D (I think all movies will eventually be in 3D) but if it can't hold it's own without the 3D, then does that make it a good movie?

I understand 3D just adds to the experience, but I don't think I've heard anyone say, "Wow, this movie was great... and I didn't see it in 3D). Not to mention the other comments are "You've got to see this in IMAX 3D". Great... $17 to see a movie.

The above comments aside, I want to see it... in 3D and IMAX. biggrin.gif

jcc64 replied: One of my sons saw the regular, non 3D version, and he still loved it as well. It's just such a visually arresting experience that if the opportunity exists to enhance it even more, why not take it? What blew me away was that this movie came entirely out of someone's head. It's unlike anything you've ever seen. Like a futuristic acid trip w/o the drugs, for lack of a better analogy.
The plot? It had more than I anticipated. As previously indicated, I'm not a sci-fi, epic, battle-a-minute kind of movie fan--very, very far from it, and I almost didn't go to this movie because the previews looked so asinine. But my dh really wanted to see it, and my teenagers blew him off to go with their friends (so sad), so I took pity on him and went along. The plot is kind of complicated to summarize, but think Dances with Wolves with peaceful aliens instead of Native Americans. I LOVED the socio-political subtext, but you can easily ignore it and just get lost in the visuals, trust me.

MommyToAshley replied: I want to go see it. DH and I were waiting to get a sitter since it was PG-13. But, since you took Corey, what did you think of it for her age?

jcc64 replied: She handled it beautifully. There were a few intense fight scenes, but honestly, nothing she hasn't seen already on home viewings of movies like Spiderman or Star Trek. I liked the messages about respecting all living things, and the "human" costs of war. She, as I said. LOVED the movie and wants to see it again (as do I).

mckayleesmom replied: I loved this movie as well.

MommyToAshley replied: Rod and I went to see the movie tonight while Ashley went on a playdate and to see Princess and the Frog with a friend. Avatar was an awesome movie... visually and from the standpoint of the story. But, I am glad I decided not to take Ashley as she would have had nightmares. When she called, she told me that the Princess and the Frog had some scary parts. laugh.gif I don't think she is ready for this type movie yet -- just proves that all kids are different and I am sure that it wouldn't bother some kids.

jcc64 replied: Corey is my 3rd kid--and with 2 teenage brothers, I have no doubt that she's seen a lot of stuff that many kids her own age haven't been exposed to yet. Still, she's easily frightened with a pretty vivid imagination, so I felt safe recommending the movie based on her reaction to it. In any event, I'm glad you and Rod enjoyed it.

mckayleesmom replied: Mckaylee and Russell loved it as well, but they are not easily frightened of stuff....

MommyToAshley replied:
No problem... I know some of Ashley's friends have seen it and Star Wars too. Ashley is just very sensitive. She saw Peter Pan and had nightmares about crocodiles. So, she's much more sensitive than most kids her age.

luvmykids replied:
I was the same way as a kid....Scooby Doo gave me nightmares and I still can't watch it to this day laugh.gif

jcc64 replied: I was that kind of kid as well. I used to watch this incredibly cheesy sci-fi tv show in reruns from the 1960s called "Lost in Space" or something like that. There was a character, Dr. Smith, who was basically just a creepy old scientist with a British accent. He wasn't even supposed to be a bad guy in the show. I used to have horrific, recurrent nightmares about him standing over my bed just staring at me that I remember to this day. So, I get how easy it is for kids to get freaked out by media imagery, believe me.

MommyToAshley replied:
Danger Will Robinson, Danger!!!

I remember that show. smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
I never liked Scooby Doo. It didn't really give me nightmares, but I never liked it. I don't watch horror movies though because I do have nightmares about them. I never thought about it before, but I guess Ashley takes after me in that regard.

jcc64 replied: OMG, Dee Dee, I can't believe you watched that show, too! I thought I was the only one old enough to have ever seen it! rolling_smile.gif

PrairieMom replied:
I have seen it, and I'm not that old. tongue.gif

coasterqueen replied:
I was gonna say, I watched that show growing up too. And I'm NOT old. tongue.gif rolling_smile.gif

DVFlyer replied:
BLASPHEMY! Lost in Space "cheesy". Bite your tongue woman!

Now if you had said Land of the Lost was cheesy, you *might* have a point. Nothing like a dose of Sleestacks to get you going in the morning. biggrin.gif

jcc64 replied: LOVE the Sleestacks!!!!!!!!!!

DVFlyer replied: thumb.gif

jcc64 replied: Who needs the Na'vi when you have Sleestacks????

MommyToAshley replied: This is kind of funny about the comparison of Avatar's storyline to Pocahontas:

jcc64 replied: That's GREAT, Dee Dee! I hadn't seen Pocahontas, but I thought the similarity to "Dances with Wolves" was also pretty hard to miss.
