Babies left in car seats.

Baywolf wrote: After hearing about more babies left in cars over the summer by parents and caretakers, I have designed a device to warn when a child is left alone in a vehicle.

I have three lovely little girls and from time to time my schedule is such that I am dropping off one or the other at pre-school before work. I am the paranoid type of dad, so I will go out of my way to check the back seat of my car to make sure that I have not forgotten anyone. I will also take a break from work and go out and look in my car to double-check.

Not all dads and caretakers are that careful and that's why I built this car seat warning device. The device emits a reminder beep when a baby or child is placed in a car seat. When the car is turned on, the reminder beep will stop. When you have reached your destination and the vehicle is turned off, the reminder beep starts and continues until the child is removed from the seat.

If the child is somehow forgotten and left in the seat for more than five minutes, a loud alarm will sound outside of the car with a voice warning that states "Child trapped in vehicle, call for help".

My questions for you moms are, would this be something that you would consider having installed in your vehicles? If so, what would be the maximum price that you would pay for such a system? Also, can you think of any other features that you would want on something like this?

Thank you in advance,
Mike

1lilpeanut2love replied: I would pay about $$30.00 for something like this. I have NEVER forgotten about my DD in the car. I hope I would never do something like that. Its scary.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: thumb.gif That is an excellent idea! I have never left my baby in the car, but have heard to many stories and it's just so sad! I would think that something like that people would probably pay between $30-$60. Good Luck! thumb.gif

I dont see how ppl. can forget their kids in the back seat of a car I had 4 and never did but I guess some are forgetful

As for what I would pay if I were forgetful 100.00 and up then maybe I wouldnt be so forgetful lol.

mckayleesmom replied: That is a neat idea. I have never left my kids in the car, but it seems to be a growing problem...which is really sad. I don't think you could ever put a price on the safety of a child, but in this case...I would think it would have to be under 100 dollars.....Not many people could afford fancy devices like this, so it would be nice if it was something that everyone could afford.

Bamamom replied: I think under a $100 as well - you want people to be able to afford it. Man that's a great idea. Great work!!!

luvmykids replied: If I needed something like that I guess I'd be willing to pay about $50, but I'm not forgetful either wink.gif

Also, I'm guessing for it sounding to be related to the car being on or not you'd have to wire it somehow? That may be another snag, wether or not it is easy to install and hook up.

Baywolf replied: Thank you all for your advice!

TheOaf66 replied: would be a good idea for those big daycare vans

C&K*s Mommie replied: agreed!!!!!

As a parent and possible consumer, I would not want to pay more than $75-$100. But I also have never left my children in the car unintentionally either. So I am not sure if I would buy it.

But daycares would definitely need it to be affordable for them, so that the extra expense could be divied among the parents and not offset the parents budget any.

Boo&BugsMom replied: I really like the idea, but would probably not pay more than $50 for one. I would also suggest an alarm sounding almost immediately or sooner, not within 5 minutes. Anything can happen within the matter of a couple minutes. Why not have the alarm sounding sooner, if you don't mind me asking?

Baywolf replied:
I decided on five minutes after visiting a gas station while my kids were in the car. It took quite a while to pump the gas and complete the transaction. I did not want to leave the key on, so the device was active and the reminder beep was going. The alarm would have triggered if the delay was shorter. There is an in-car reminder beep that triggers right away.

I suppose I could adjust the timer on the alarm, but I fear that it would be an anoyance if it triggered while getting the kids out of the car etc.

holley79 replied: Good idea.
