Bad allergy news for us too

DansMom wrote: Daniel had new testing done today---still highly reactive to milk and egg, and today we found out that he's also peanut, tree nut and sesame allergic. This was skin testing on the forearm, and they were huge welts. The doc reassured us that some kids are highly reactive skin testers, and in one year we'll redo the skin testing along with the blood test to establish a baseline to track IgE levels.

The only thing he didn't react to that we tested for was shellfish. Well---I hate seafood, but especially shellfish. It's one thing I never ate while pregnant or nursing. I'm convinced he reacts to everything I loved to eat---which is kind of depressing.

coasterqueen replied: oh that stinks Tracy. sad.gif Just one more thing to eliminate and worry about. sleep.gif hug.gif hug.gif

amynicole21 replied: Oh man. I was hoping it would have gotten better by now. sad.gif I'm sorry.

redchief replied: I'm sorry Tracy. Don't be too depressed; you all will figure it out just fine as he grows.

Kaitlin'smom replied: sorry it was not better news

kit_kats_mom replied: Bummer. But Tracy, it is not your fault. hug.gif If you were right, K would be allergic to everything but peas, flan and carrots because I believe I ate everything else on the planet, in huge quantaties, when I was pregnant with her. She would be especially sensitive to salsa and ice cream. rolling_smile.gif

sparkys2boys replied: hug.gif Oh sorry that it was not good news.. but it still could be worse right. Stay postive and he may outgrow some of this stuff too.

boyohboyohboy replied: Tracy I am so sorry for Dan. Does he like peanut butter that it would be hard for him to give it up? It sure seems there are a lot of kids here lately showing up with that.
I can honestly say that in the month since we have been thru this, its not been that hard. and most things we eat didnt contain the nuts anyways.
I was thinking though when you mentioned the seasem, that we had jake break out recently and we didnt know why, and I wonder if its that....

I was wondering if you could explain more about the Ige levels, do they drop as the kids get older? they are testing jake every 6 months right now, and I wasnt sure why..

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Oh I'm so so so sorry! That's bad news! I'm glad to know that they re-test and that some kids are just sensitive to the tests. I didn't know that. unsure.gif

Don't beat yourself up over what you ate during your PG. I know the guilt, but you know that what you ate had/has nothing to do with his allergies!! hug.gif

I'm still in the process of doing my research on the whole tree-nut allergy. If I find anything relatively new and/or interesting, I'll shoot you a PM. wink.gif

ediep replied: oh no Tracy, I thought for sure he'd outgrow all this. I hope he does soon!!!
Good luck!! hug.gif

DansMom replied: Thank you so much for the support and encouragement, everyone! It really means a lot to me.

Stacy, as far as peanut butter goes, he's never had that, or any nuts---because the allergist said two years ago that we shouldn't introduce any potent allergens. So he's not missing peanut butter or nuts at all, thank goodness---he doesn't have to give up anything new. I suspected about the sesame because of his reactions to hummus that had tahini in it. Yesterday the doc said that the IGE testing over time will show the level of reactivity, whether it goes up or down, and this will help us determine whether he's outgrowing some of the allergies or they're getting worse---either can happen. Daniel hasn't needed the blood testing for IgE yet because his skin reactions are so pronounced that we know we need to keep avoiding for now. Yesterday, the doc said that sesame has a similar protein/molecular structure to peanuts, and so some kids cross-react to it.

Sigh---you know, we may need to start an allergy forum some day! But I hope all our little ones outgrow these troubles.

DansMom replied:
Same here, Rae! hug.gif Thanks It kind of bummed me out when the doc said only 9 percent of kids who have Daniel's level of skin reaction outgrow treenut allergy. Peanut is higher at 20%, so he said. Still not great odds, but I'm determined to do all of the homeopathic and traditional medicine approaches that I can afford!

Anyway, the gist of it is- have hope that he will outgrow it. My 14 yo ds outgrew most of his environmental issues, and even his asthma. I was crushed when he was little- envisioning a life of restrictions and illness- but that absolutely was not the case. His friend down the street, who did have extensive food allergies at Dan's age, now can eat whatever he wants in copious quantities. Have hope. In the meantime, hug.gif

lisar replied: hug.gif Sorry it wasnt better news.

flirtycuddle replied: I'm sorry to hear it wasn't good news. My ds (7 months) was just found to have wheat, corn, all nuts, soy, diary, apple, mango, carrort, legumes, and egg allergies and it's been ruff. I am so not looking foward to when he is off formula and on regular food. I have no idea what to feed him now as it is and he is still on baby food.

A&A'smommy replied: awww that sucks, poor baby!!!! I hope they he will grow out of it quickly.. I know my cousin was allergic to nearly everything when he was young and grew out of he is 15 now and is a big ol boy hug.gif hug.gif I'm sorry honey!! hug.gif
