Battle of the suburban - yard sales!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: You guys will never believe what happened to me yesterday. I still can't believe it myself! I thought I was living in a bad episode of Desperate Housewives!

DH and I had been planning to have a yard sale for months now, stocking up all our junk in our garage and waiting for the perfect day. Of course we decided to do it after our long vacation, just so we weren't rushed. So yesterday was the day. We got up early and started setting up. It was a gorgeous day and we were both in good moods...the kids too! I was standing in our driveway when a mini-van pulls up with their window down. Their is a young boy hanging his head out of the window and his mom stops to say something to me through the window. She says in a sarcastic tone "Did you put an ad in the paper". I said "nope, no ad" in a cheerful, its such a beautiful day way. She says "oh, so I guess you're going to take advantage of the fact that WE did!?" With a very confused look on my face, I say calmly "I'm taking advantage how?" So she continues with her son chiming in "Did you get the flyer?" Me "what flyer?". "We sent a flyer out asking all the neighbors if they wanted to do a block yard sale, did you get it?" Me "nope, I didn't get any flyer". Which was the truth. And she drove off.

So then she drove to the end of the block and grabbed all her signs off the street corner...DH watched and she placed them on the OTHER end of the street just to re-route people literally around the block. Just so they wouldn't go to our house first. She lives maybe three houses UP the street from us. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? Competition for a yard sale???! Literally competing over a JUNK sale! laugh.gif There were two other yard sales going on around us as well, but DH said she overheard her telling the neighbors about the incident. As if we were trying to do her wrong and take advantage of her traffic!! I'm just shocked that anyone would act this way. First of all, I never received a flyer. Second, we've been out of town and had no idea about her so called "plan". Third, it's a free country and she doesn't own the block. And last, its total coincidence that we planned a yard sale the same day...Its truly NONE OF HER BUSINESS WHAT WE DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! growl.gif

Anyhow, we ended up making a little over $200 yesterday, which wasn't bad I thought. And truthfully, I think the more sales, the more traffic for everyone! Sad sad woman. wacko.gif I had no idea who she even was!

CantWait replied: mad.gif WOW what a little *(^#% That's unreal!!!!!
hug.gif

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Rae that's awesome.

There were probably 10 sales going on in our neighborhood the same day as ours but as most everyone had to drive past our house to get to the others it worked out really well for us. If you still have the rest of your junk feel free to use our house...lots of traffic there and no one home biggrin.gif

lovemy2 replied: Garbage Sales are a mean business huh tongue.gif

We are having one next weekend - hope to get rid of all my infant stuff and a WHOLE bunch of other junk too wink.gif

Glad you made some cash thumb.gif

Twelve Volt Man replied: She sounds like a real gem. With any luck, maybe she fell and impaled herself on her sign post!

Anthony275 replied:
hopefully

Maddie&EthansMom replied: huh.gif blink.gif ohmy.gif dry.gif

Around here everyone prefers to share. Like one neighbor will say "I put an ad in the paper for a neighborhood garage sale so feel free to put some stuff out." Or they'll say "Bring your stuff on over...we're having a sale this weekend." What's a few dollars for an ad???? growl.gif

I can't believe the nerve of some people!!!! Karma will bite her in the butt. wink.gif

redchief replied:
Why do the police always want to hand off society's garbage to EMS for to deal with? emlaugh.gif

I'm glad your sale still went well. thumb.gif

Twelve Volt Man replied:
LOL... don't worry, I probably wouldn't have bothered EMS with such a $%@#~!

CantWait replied:
laugh.gif rolling_smile.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: lol you have got to be kidding me what a looser it will bite her in the butt wink.gif

MyBabeMaddie replied: Wow some people really need to get a life!!!

Sam & Abby's Mom replied: daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang !

MoonMama replied: ohmy.gif WHAT THE....Rae I don't even know what to say to that one. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif hug.gif

redchief replied:
Cool... Care to come on up and give an in-service to my officers? rolling_smile.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied: dry.gif I would take something, preferably broken, you have leftover from your sale and wrap it up all pretty and set it on her door step with a nice note thanking her for her ad and saying how well your sale went! laugh.gif

What a wacko.gif blink.gif wacko.gif !!! I had one sale a few months ago and I think my stuff will go to Goodwill from now on! People are just wacko.gif insaneabout some things! blink.gif

holley79 replied: Some people. rolleyes.gif I would be laughing at her pettiness.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: OMG. What a loser.

Come on. If she was really concerned about someone taking advantage....why DID she pay for the ad? Please. What a Snob. Glad you made 200$ on her ad. laugh.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
I like the way you think Abbie!

Her husband is a realtor and he prides himself on selling the most houses in our subdivision, so somehow I think they DO believe they own the block. emlaugh.gif DH, being in the same industry, was really tempted to talk to her husband and say "because of your rude wife, you just lost our business. We plan to sell our home in the next 9 months. We won't be calling you...too bad, so sad!" But we're bigger people I suppose... laugh.gif

Calimama replied: What an idiot. wacko.gif

DansMom replied: You have to laugh at people like that. It makes them even more furious. Maybe she'll spontaneously combust!

Here in Ann Arbor Yard Sales are cut-throat. If you put an ad in the paper, there are people camped out in front of your house more than an hour ahead of time waiting to get the good stuff. And there's a yard-sale culture and community that is so tight someone actually wrote a murder mystery about it! It's by Susan Holtzer, entitled "Something to Die For". laugh.gif
