Beach wear
Maddie&EthansMom wrote: I'm going to SoBe in one month with a friend of mine. We will be there for 4 nights. Our hotel is directly on the beach so we will be spending a lot of time laying out, I'm sure. This will be the first time I've had a beach vacation like this. And it's been years since I've even been on a beach. I'm not really sure what to pack. Of course I will be packing some casual clothes for our nights out clubbing. Do I need quite a few swimsuits? I have 3 good ones, should I buy more just in case? What types of cover ups are best? I thought about getting a tunic, a dress and pants. Do you think that's okay?
For those who live in FL, can you tell me about the weather this time of year? Like how does the weather at night differ from the day, etc.
gr33n3y3z replied: Your gonna be a classy looking lady there
When I went to the beach in Fl. I was in a teeshirt and surfer shorts but thats the way it is here in the summer also
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: When I visit family in CA during the summer, I bring one swimsuit (I always end up wearing my favorite anyway, so why bring more), a versatile dress (one you can wear to the pool over your swimsuit but also out at night, you know, one you can dressup like a babydoll, tshirt style or tunic style), tunic type tops like you said to wear with jeans or bermuda type shorts, wife beater tanks which go with everything (I sleep in them too, plus perfect over a swimsuit with short shorts), one versatile handbag (sometimes a clutch for going out), and a cute sweat outfit. Shoes: one pair of pumps that go with everything, flipflops, and cute tennis shoes. CA is REALLY into the their flipflops, not sure about FL, but these are what they wear with just about everything, everyplace, even nice restaurants....Flipflops. My sister who lives there says the metallic ones are really hot and go with everything!
Have FUN!!
My3LilMonkeys replied: I think I'm with Lisa on this one....I wear jeans and T shirts, and I only own 1 bathing suit so that's never a question. Shoes - sneakers and flip flops are all I need.
luvmykids replied: What Rae said
I've been to SoBe, but I was there in September and the weather was a lot hotter during the day so nights were still pretty warm. In other words, I'm no help, am I?
Have a great time!
Calimama replied: You say that like that's not the norm...
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I like those flip flops, Rae. I have a gc to Nordstrom's too. I'll have to go today and check them out.
We are staying at a 5 star hotel. Normally I would just wear a t-shirt and cut off sweats, that's why I need help here. I don't know what the norm is...I'm sure you see just about everything. I just want to fit in.
coasterqueen replied: I don't know about SoBe, but from the perspective of staying at 5 stars I think what you mentioned will be just fine. I don't think I'd buy any more swim suits than you already have either. I know every time I pack more than one I end up only wearing one and the others sit in my suitcase.
Have fun!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I was raised a beach baby in Santa Barbara, so it was the norm growing up, but now in Colorado, not so much. I would look a little funny wearing flipflops in the middle of winter here, especially into a restaurant.
Beachtowns are always so casual, but I know what you mean Aimee, you still want to feel put together. I think accessories will help. Like a cute long chain or beads to throw over a simple tank. Or some really cute sunglasses. You are super fashionable, so you won't have any problem, but I'm hoping to just throw out something you haven't thought of yet. I also saw a lot of girls in skinny jeans and flats, that was in CA though back in September. Lots of tunic tops, but with skinny jeans or those short shorts (always a flat shoe).
Maddie&EthansMom replied: So, if I wear jeans, I should wear skinny jeans and flats? I don't have skinny jeans and I was planning on taking jeans for our nights out. Do you have a brand that you recommend? Should I go with dark denim? There is one shirt in particular that I was planning on taking. It's a silk red halter that has a tie at the waist. What kind of flats would I wear with that? The only flats I have are black patent, mary jane style. Sounds ugly, but really they are cute. You know what, Sherrie (my friend going with) wears the same size shoe and she has an awesome shoe collection. I'll see what she has and go from there.
I have a ton of tank tops and plenty of dresses. I didn't make it to Nordstrom's today, but I'm definitely buying those flip flops.
When you say tunic top I'm assuming you are referring to the non fitted, blousy shirt....and not necessarily the length. Or are tunics always long?
I need to buy some accessories...thanks for the reminder!! I can totally picture everything you are saying. It's giving me a lot of good ideas. I would be in so much trouble if I lived near you.
luvmykids replied: JMHO, the jeans you already have are probably great, just not necessarily on the big trend of the moment, kwim? I don't think you can ever go wrong with great fitting jeans
I think of tunics as always longer in length, non fitted and blousy brings to mind an empire waist or babydoll, both of which are in now too.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Yep, tunics are blousy. My sister has a friend who is a stylist for celebrities, so she is always giving my sis pointers, and then my sis tells me. She said blousy tops should be worn with tight fitting jeans or leggings. Where fitted tops go with flowy pants or wide-legged jeans. And for shoes, wide leg pants go with wedges or platforms, skinny jeans go with pumps or flats or flat style sandels, but definitely no wedge with skinny jeans.
I know it sounds ridiculous, all the stupid rules, and believe me, I'm not THAT into fashion, but my sister is and this is what she tells me. I would go dark denim at night, only because it's so slimming. I would hate to tell you to buy skinny jeans and then they don't wear them there. But I just think they look best with flowy tops. I have a pair of skinny jeans from Express, Guess and Old Navy (although I'm not that happy with the ON). I bet you could find some in the Brass Plum section at Nordstrom if you wanted. They actually really elongate your legs, especially in a dark color and dark high heels!
Your top sounds adorable and I bet the black patent leather flats would look adorable with it! But for going out to a club, wear heels!! Forever 21 has some great ideas and a ton of tunic tops!

Maddie&EthansMom replied: AWESOME!!!!! That helps so much! I have the most trouble with what shoes to wear with what pants, skirt, etc.
Skinny jeans are really in here, too. My friend only wears skinny jeans, but she is tiny. I don't know if I have the right figure, but I will try them out.
Oh and I LOVE Forever 21
Calimama replied: I hear you, although I wore flip flops in Novemeber in IL.. in the snow. BAD idea.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Glad I could help! You know, I hope I didn't come off like a know-it-all. I always start worrying that people get offended when I suggest things to wear, as if that's all that I'm about. Or that I'm judging what people wear. If you guys knew me IRL, I'm really just a jeans and t-shirt gal, but when you're stuck inside for weeks on end, because of bad weather, surrounded by men (boys) all the time, I just go a little overboard sometimes on talking girl stuff! So thanks for letting me share my ideas! Can you tell I need a GNO?!!
luvmykids replied: I am right there with you sister....even though I just had one
Too bad my friend moved from COS or we'd come whisk you out
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I don't think you sound like a know it all.
It's easier for me to give someone else advice on what to wear, than it is for me to figure out what to put on my body. I do a lot of searching websites for ideas, but like I said before, I have the most trouble with putting things together. What you said earlier about the different styles of jeans, shirts and shoes paired together made a lot of sense to me.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Thanks ladies! I'm the same way Aimee, I'm much better putting clothes together for other people than I am for myself. Thank god I have my sis to help me out with all her little "rules"!
And btw, you will look great in anything Aimee! Just be comfortable and have a great time!
