Blood types

HuskerMom wrote: Is it possible for two people who have the same blood type to have a kid that has a different one? I was talking to my mom earlier and somehow this came up. She said that both her and my dad are type O, and so is my brother, but mine is A+. I assume it's possible but I just thought that was weird.

luvmykids replied: I have no idea, I don't have a clue what my blood type is and as you can guess have no idea what DH or the kids' is either blush.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I have no idea I don't know anything about blood types.. wink.gif pretty cool though

luvmykids replied: I found this, don't know if it helps you or not huh.gif

I found it on this site Dr Greene

mummy2girls replied: im not sure. I know though... Jordan was O positive ..I am O neg and my ex was A pos so that how jordan got to be O pos. But if both are pos O im not sure

HuskerMom replied:
Thanks for the info. I'm going to do some more reading about it before I freak out too much. The last line of that scares me though.

redchief replied:
I don't believe it's possible for a child of two O parents to have type A.

Calimama replied: Maybe your mom was wrong about your dads blood type? I'm not sure that's possible for you to be an A but then I'm not doctor.

amymom replied:
Anyway, I would not worry about all this. Maybe someone is mistaken about a blood type. Recheck with your mom about the specifics. Sometimes people think their blood type has been tested and it never has. It is not a routine test, unless you are a blood donor. Please don't read too much into it. Get all the facts first.

hug.gif Good Luck

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Genetically, if both your parents are type O, it's impossible for you to be A. Unless your dad isn't who you think it is. unsure.gif

Hubby is A type and I'm O type. One of my daughers is A, the other two kids are O.

My code: OO+ DH's code: AO-

the only options are OO or AO.

If the blood types were AO and BO, the options would be AO, BO, AB or OO.

It's convenient for me to be O... I can give my blood to anyone.

gr33n3y3z replied: Ed and I are both O Neg all 4 children are O Neg

So I dont think so

gr33n3y3z replied:
Ask your Dr they will tell you smile.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied: Not possible!

My father is O+ my mom is B or something and all the kids are O except me, I got my mom's blood type! I think its B ... lol

jcc64 replied: I know it's possible for a kid to have a diff blood type than his parents. My little brother needed emergency surgery when he was an infant, and my parents couldn't donate for this reason.

momtoMegan&Alyxandria replied: My DH and I were discussing it last night as well. Due to "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader". My question was is Blood types the same as intergers in math (can you believe I actually remember this?) where if you have:
+ and - = -
+ and + = +
- and - = +

My DH said he had no idea, but it kinda makes sense.

Casey and I have also been bringing up the blood type questions, but we couldn't find a lot that made sense online discussing it.

Cece00 replied: No, it is not possible. If both your parents are O, you should also be O.

My DH and I are both O (and so is my ex) and all 4 of my kids are O also...

gr33n3y3z replied:
ummm this isnt math

neg and a neg you get an neg

My2Beauties replied:
Brian and I both have O+ so do both kids.

redchief replied: I found this chart... seems to set down the possibilities in simple terms:

redchief replied:
Jeanne, is it possible that the problem was in RH factor and not type? For instance, if your father was O+ and your brother O-, your father would not be able to give blood to his son.

Conversely O- blood can be given to anyone, though hematologists say that exact type matching is best. This is the case between my father and myself. My dad is marginally O-, meaning that in some matching tests he has come up with positive (+) RH. They would not let him give me his blood.

redchief replied: I also found a chart that explains (not as clearly as the typing chart) how RH factor would distribute. The white areas are possible child's RH factor.

HuskerMom replied: I think I'm going to talk to my parents before I get worried. Hopefully one of them is wrong about their type. I'm sure that's probably what happened.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
Yes, for the longest time I thought I was a B+. It wasn't until I had Wil and they told me I was an O in the hospital. So it is possible someone (your parents) just was either tested wrong or has it wrong.

My DH is an A and same with the boys. But I'm an O.

Okay... I'm confused...

I read that you wrote that it was possible for parents both with type O blood to have a child with another blood type... then I read your quote and this is the first thing that popped out at the end of that paragraph...

Conversely, if two parents both have type O blood, all their children will have type O blood.

Which is what I had always thought.

A person with types A or B blood can have a child with O blood, but two parents with O blood cannot have a child with any other type blood but O.

Anthony275 replied: don't you need a shot when you're pregnant if you and your partner have different blood types? or at least if one's positive and the other is negative

punkeemunkee'smom replied:
I quoted the wrong part of the article.... rolling_smile.gif It talked about a resessive O gene...Sorry laugh.gif LONG day! wacko.gif I will go look again blink.gif

Kentuckychick replied:
thumb.gif

Okay, I mean I honestly have no idea so I can't say one way or the other I had just always thought that was the way it went.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: This topic jumped out at me because I was having the whole RHneg thing convo with my best friend the other day. She is RHneg and she was asking me if I knew what causes that....I am still looking for that article again laugh.gif rolleyes.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
lol

Abbie there is NO WAY it can happen. None. Genetically IMPOSSIBLE.

(I took biotechnology in high school, just btw... we spent a long time on genealogy when we cross bred different types of fruit flies looking at the different illeals (sp) such as white eyes, red eyes, stripes or not, etc... and had to determine recessive\dominant genes... we studied the genes in humans as well, we just obviously couldn't experiment with it... but we did experiment with our blood. You can be + or -, and that can be different from your parents.)

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Rocky did I read that you can have type AO blood and the O is recessive so then you could have a child with Type A? wacko.gif It was late and I was reading after a longggg day! sorry for my mistake blush.gif

Kentuckychick replied:
I remember taking biology in highschool and then again two years ago in college and the only thing I REALLY remember about the entire Mendel/fruit fly/allele/blood/recessive thing is how much I hate, hate HATED it!

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Yes. O is recessive... and even if the parent is A type, they could have an o recessive to pass on, making the child O type. But if both parents are O type, they don't have anything to pass on other than O, so it's impossible for them to have an A type child.
