Boy's haircuts

Our Lil' Family wrote: Do you cut your son's hair?

I used to trim it when he was little, there really was only hair on the top. For a while now we've been having it professionally done about every 4 or 5 weeks but it's such a drama fest because he hates it! So today I decided to stick him in the tub and trim the top myself....I'm pretty impressed at how it came out. He only fought it a little bit, because he had toys to play with in the tub! I didn't touch the sides but I might try to trim around the ears tonight. So I just saved $10 and got about 2 extra weeks...maybe more!!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: No, I just take him to great clips about every two months and spend $8. He's a pill about it, but better a professional than me. I kind of like the shaggy look he gets. I usually just have them trim up the back and over his ears cause I like the top longer.

indywndy_04 replied: I would give my kids a lolly pop during their haircut and sit them in my lap with the gown over both of us. smile.gif It usually did the trick. I would talk to him and distract him while they cut.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Ethan loves getting his haircut, but I did consider trimming it myself since we have trimmers. I'm just afraid I'll screw it up. blink.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: I tried one time to cut Tanner's hair. I screwed up and I ended up having to buzz cut him (put the wrong guard on the clippers). He was not happy with me. I have a pic of him all PO'd about it that I have posted on here several times.

I take him to see a stylist, her name is Cindy. She only charges me $10 for him. If I were to take him anywhere else I'd be paying $25. I'm not about to pay that much for a little boy's haircut. If he was just getting buzzed, I'd do it myself, but he has nice thick styleable (sp?) hair so I let Cindy do it. smile.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: Oh, I should also add that for a long time Tanner did not like going to get his hair cut. He made a HUGE stink about it. What helped was first going to the same person (Cindy) over and over so the same person is cutting his hair. And second, when he was smaller Cindy would bring her laptop in and play Nemo for him while she cut his hair. smile.gif

CantWait replied: Nope, I'm to scared I'll mess it up. I take both the kids once a month to the barber. It cost 8.25 each (10.00 with tip), so I'm spending $20 a month just on hair. dry.gif They both have very thick hair.

redplaydoh replied: My kids LOVE getting their hair cut... at the hairdressers. Y'know how most kids have a hissy fit walking past a candy store?? Mine do that when they see any place that cuts hair. Lucas will grab a fist full of hair and say his hair is "too big" and he needs it cut, and it can be really short at the time, not needing even a trim. When we say no, it's the end of the world. Crying... snot flowing... the works. We've been known to avoid walking past hair salons... emlaugh.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Yes, I do it myself, or DH does it. We just take the clippers to both boys hair and do a buzz. Very easy. Their hair grows so quick and I've never really been happy when we go to get it cut. Total waste of money IMO. I even did my friend's son's hair a few weeks ago. She liked it, so I guess I'm starting my own little in-home business...but pro bono of course. See photos below.... wub.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: so Rae you just use the clippers all over their head? What number do you use? I need to start doing Ethan's myself. It's a fortune when we go in. dry.gif

Cece00 replied: I do it myself. My older 2 FREAK over haircuts & its very embarrassing in public. I'm talking crying, thrashing around. blink.gif

I'm pretty good at it, with clippers. I cant do much with scissors. I've never messed up either of their hair too much (and even then, I'm really the only one who notices it...) and I've been doing it for about 3 yrs.

They are finally starting to mellow out about it, and ASKING for scissors (they dont like the noise of the clippers) so I am thinking we may try a stylist soon. I'll have to find someone who is reasonable, I am not paying $20 for a haircut for a kid. But I figure within the next couple of months I may try my oldest & see how he does, and then try Evan, who is the one who REALLY REALLY does not like getting a haircut.

This was a couple of days after their last haircuts, on 5/20. I havent had to give them one since then, and I can probably go another 2-3 wks before they will need one. Their hair doesnt grow *too* fast, and I usually let it get a little longer before I cut it, since they hate it so much. Plus usually when they start looking like they need a haircut, I can trim around the edges with scissors a bit & get another week or so out of it.

Boo&BugsMom replied: If anyone is thinking of cutting their own child's hair...just remember this picture and use your own judgement wisely. wink.gif laugh.gif
Tanner after I gave him his haircut...........

redplaydoh replied: rolling_smile.gif That picture is TOO funny.... I take it he wasn't too happy with you! That is a PRICELESS expression! rolling_smile.gif

Cece00 replied:
Poor guy happy.gif

it really doesnt look that bad, though. you just needed a longer guard on the top.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Yep, he was furious at me. "You're NOT CINDY!!!!" he shouted at me. Arg! Sorry kid, money gets tight sometimes. I've posted this before several times but I thought I'd be fitting since that is the reasoning for the expression on his face. laugh.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: That's hilarious, Jennie! He is so not happy with you! laugh.gif

luvmykids replied: The one and only time I tried to do it for Colt I left the guard off altogether and shaved a strip smack down the middle ohmy.gif We were on our way to get pics taken, no less.

Since then DH does it and does a great job. We also have a place here specifically for kids, it's really cool, they have funny looking tv's that they can watch videos on, the stuff smells cool and the stylists wear crazy stuff. We've only gone there twice but they loved it!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
I'm thinking I used a #4 this last time. All around. I use scissors to trim the neck and around the ears. Their cuts never look great. Always a bit lop-sided on the bottom, but hey, they are just little boys! It grows back so quick. My kiddos have thick curls and it sorta gets fuzzy when it gets too long. biggrin.gif

HuskerMom replied: I do it or Dh does. We just put on the longest guard thingy and do it. Usually takes about 2 minutes. Keith doesn't mind it but he won't hold still cuz he wants to turn his head to see what we're doing. blush.gif Dh used the scissors around his ears one time. I was so nervous because my mom accidently clipped my ear when I was little because I wouldn't hold still. blush.gif

moped replied: I have screwed up Jacks hair before so I take him to a kids place for $11 and he doesn't like it but he loves his hair when we are done.

I like a nice short cut and usually get it buzzed, but didn't last time. I will for sure next time.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Man, am I the only one who kind of likes the shaggy look? I can't stand the thought of buzzing Logan's hair. Guess I'm a hippie at heart.

boyohboyohboy replied: caleb hated to get his hair cut when he was younger, and i always buzzed it with the number 4 until he was about 4 or so then he started to go to the hair dressor, but it seems a lot to me even $10 for a boys hair cut..
jake wont let us cut it, and it was just suggested to me to try holding him on my lap and put him in front of the tv and let dh do it...we might try.
but jake has longer curly hair so i dont want to do it yet...

jem0622 replied: Off and on I have...but it's a bit more nutty around here, so I usually just go to the barber or hair cuttery.
