CHICKEN POX - are you serious

Mommy2Isabella wrote: URGGGGGGG

OK!! Bella went for her 1yr appointment last tuesday ... well they gave her the chicken pox vaccine ..

LOW AND STINKING BEHOLD ... My child NOW HAS CHICKEN POX!!!
I thought my mom had fleas but the "bites" are swollen and RED and hot ... as well as the poor baby is super clingy, and running a fever ...

sad.gif So all in all, we paid the pediatrician to INFECT our child with chicken pox ... not to mention I have never had them, just got the vaccine a few years ago... I have to go to the OB first thing in the morning to have blood work done to see if I have the antibodie for it ...

HOW INCONVIENENT!!

sorry to rant ... just a little frustrated right now ...

lovemy2 replied: Did you take her to the PED and they confirmed that it was Chicken Pox? Poor thing!! I guess it makes sense - aren't most vaccines really injecting the child with whatever they are immunizing against or something along those lines???

Hope she feels better soon hug.gif hug.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied: No our Ped. is closed, my mom said that it was and so did my moms best friend who is a RN ... so we are pretty sure. I called the Ped. to find out what to do next!

It started out as 1 "bite" on monday! Yesterday I noticed 2 more "bites" and today 4 more "bites" ... all the while running a low grade fever which I attributed to teething!!!

We are almost POSTIVE that it is chicken pox though ... what else could it be??? As well it just so happens that she had the vaccine 8 days ago TODAY! and the first mark showed up on day 6 after the vaccine ...

My3LilMonkeys replied: hug.gif I know it's inconvenient, but it's better she have them now than later. Generally the younger they are, the less severe. And from what I've heard, cases caused by the vaccine are not uncommon and usually very mild.

BAC'sMom replied: If it is chicken pox you might want to let your Dr. know your child has chicken pox. Just as a precaution wink.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied: I already called them because I have never had them ... but I have gotten the vaccine ... I have to go in tomorrow morning to be tested for the antibodies to it ...

gr33n3y3z replied:
they want you to go in and expose other ppl.????
thats very crazy ohmy.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied: How else would I find out if I have the antibodies??

I don't know ... I think I would already have spots too, I have been around bella the whole time ... BLAH !!

gr33n3y3z replied:
well a lab would work just fine you would just infect a few I hope non preggo woman and not an office full of them

It just doesnt sound right to me and if you had the shot you have the antibodies bc my kids had the shot and never got retested they only do that for Hep.B to make sure it took well I did for CARA and the Borough Employees also

Our Lil' Family replied: It would be VERY BAD for you to get chicken pox while pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know it's almost impossible but can Bella stay elsewhere until she's better? I'm VERY serious!

BAC'sMom replied:
That is what I understand too.

I am kinda shocked that they gave Bella that shot knowing full well that you are pregnant. I would think that the shot could have waited. JMO

Mommy2Isabella replied: I asked the ped, if it was OK for her to get the vac. while I was pregnant and they said yes!

I also told them I had never had chicken pox, I had only had the vaccine. The odd's of me getting them are VERY SLIM. The on call nurse called me and they said that she isn't contagious since she was introduced to the virus in a controled environment .. yadda yadda yadda, but that I need to be tested for the antibodies JUST IN CASE! The OB informed me that there is a medication that they can prescribe to help counteract the virus. We will see what happens tomorrow!!

jacobsmama replied: When our patients call us and say someone has 5th's disease or chicken pox in the family. We always have the mom be tested for the antibodies to make sure they are immune to Chicken pox or parvo virus. It is very common to get checked for it because it is dangerous for you to get it if you are pregnant.

If you would have told them you had it for sure then they wouldn't be having you come in. But since you never had it and only had the vaccine that is why they want you checked.

Same reason when we are pregnant we all get our Rubella checked every pregnancy. Because even if you got the vaccine it can become non-immune and you have to get again.

So it is good they are checking...But i'm Sorry she got the chicken pox!

hug.gif

Sam & Abby's Mom replied: That totally sucks ! hug.gif

I hope you dont get them and hopefully Bella will be feeling better soon. Poor baby.

Cece00 replied:
chicken pox has a long incubation period.

My daughter had it last yr, and THREE WEEKS later my son got it.

So you still need to watch for a couple of weeks.

Brias3 replied: I know for example with the flu shot, they have to "guess" at what strain of flu will go around essentially, and then inject you with that particular strain to make you immune. This of course isn't fool proof, and it certainly doesn't mean you will NOT get the flu....might be the same with chicken pox.

Eithe way, what a bummer! Hope your little one feels better soon smile.gif Poor thing sad.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied: Well so far no more spots on Bella just the 8 or 9 that were there last night. smile.gif

Lets hope thats all she gets!!! They said she wasn't contagious but ... I am not sure about that ... she is running a fever and everything ... I am going to have my blood work done today and if I don't have the antibodies I guess they will put me on the medication to counteract the chicken pox.

AHHH .... this STINKS and my poor baby ... sad.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
That doesn't make sense... chicken pox regardless of how you got it, is chicken pox. How can she not be contagious?

PrairieMom replied:
thats what I was thinking too. But, I don't know a thing about disease processes. dunno.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied: I am in complete agreeance with the how can she NOT be contagious deal .. it just doesn't make sense to me. Either way ... she is MISERABLE today . fever of like 101 + she woke up this morning and was 102.4 sad.gif

I wish I could make her feel better ...

lisar replied: I am sorry. I hope she feels better soon and I hope you dont get them.

mummy2girls replied:
I think and please dont quote me( no pun intended) LOL...i think its only contagious with the fever.. oh wait no thats measels.. see good thing i asked you not to quote me..LOLOL.

mummy2girls replied:
Jess.. what may have happened and why i think is because jenna had this happen. After bella got the vax she probably got a mild case of it. so if so those are the only spots she will get. and i remeber the nurse saying the after effect of the vax could be a mild case and with that its not as contagious. BUT please dont quote me because this was over 3 years ago. but with jenna she did get the vax and then within a few days she got a few spots. no fever but MISERABLE!

but anyways being you are preggo i would see the OB. because thats something I would not risk. and i mean go in and talk to him/her face to face.

Mommy2Isabella replied: urg! I called them, they said she is contagious. ALSO, me being vaccinated doesn't mean JACK. Because they have no way of knowing what strand was given to her or what strand was given to me 6+ years ago.

She said she isn't sure what they need to do since the incubation period is so long. She said she would call me back. SHE HASN'T YET!!!

I will call them in about 30 minutes when they are back from lunch!

Calimama replied: I hope you don't catch it, and Bella starts feeling better. hug.gif

gr33n3y3z replied:
There is no such thing as a controled environment

you will either get them or not chicken pox is chicken pox doesnt matter how you get them

gr33n3y3z replied:
ok now why are they changing their minds??????
What kind of Dr. is this??
Find another Dr please bc this one cant seems to make up its mind or other ppl. cant nosmiley.gif

gr33n3y3z replied:
As far as I know its all one type of shot thats it I mean they have diffrent lots but its all the same

Mommy2Isabella replied: I am trying to call the office now and it is busy ... this is really starting to irritate me.

PrairieMom replied:
how frustrating for you. I would be out of my mind. growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif I hope you can get some straight answers. Good Grief. hug.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: I cannot stress to you how dangerous it would be for you to get chicken pox. Unless you live 45 minutes from your Dr. you need to go to his office if you cannot get them on the phone AND you need to have someone else take care of Bella until she is well. I AM VERY SERIOUS...this is literally a life or death situation!

Mommy2Isabella replied: Ok got ahold of them I have to go in tomorrow morning for blood work. It won't be back until monday ... they make me so mad. I am FREAKING OUT over here and they are diddly daddling around!!!

1. There is NO ONE to watch Bella. I am the only one, we called Sal's mom to see if she could come up here and take care of her and she said NO! I am the only one.

2. I understand the seriousness. Though once you are past 18 weeks the risk to the baby isn't as severe from what I understand. Maybe that is why my dr. doesn't give a CRAP.

I am so mad right now I could throw up!

luvmykids replied: Can't you go to an Urgent Care or something? I know if you have it, you have it, but I'd rather know sooner or later, Monday is a long time away.

Mommy2Isabella replied: Well I suppose they must know what they are doing because I would hate to call them on monday morning or tomorrow even and have to tell them, look I've got chicken pox, now I need you to figure out what to do.

When they could have had me in there this morning, rushed the blood work and known this afternoon if they weren't sitting on their thumbs. Sal said we could always sue for neglegence emlaugh.gif

Either way, Im angry, SERIOUSLY considering a diffrent OB at this point. Even though I am so far into it. This is ridiculous, they should have had me in there THIS MORNING!!

luvmykids replied: Of course it's your call but I definitely wouldn't wait until Monday. You have good insurance, use it laugh.gif

At this point I don't know I'd put a lot of faith in your OB...doesn't seem to take a lot of things seriously when he should wink.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied:

I know what you mean. I am scared to change though. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and just go to a diffrent doctor.

moped replied:
Can you call Sal and ask him to come home for a short time???

mummy2girls replied:
why would you hate to hun? if i was in your position i would have aron come take jenna whether he likes it or not and have my buttr in the car and on my way to the hospital. At this point what im reading is your OB is not professional.. and didnt you say he was a high risk doc? im not sure if its just where you are but any high risk ob here would not be taking the risk of chicken pox with a preggo for that exact reason... being SUED! You are man calmer than me.

MyLuvBugs replied: Just a note...this is what our PED gave us on a hand-out at Lexi's 1 yr check-up on Tues. regarding the Chicken Pox Vaccine....this is exactly what it says

"VAR: Varicella - Chickenpox
The most common side effect of varicella vaccine is soreness and redness at the site of injection. Some children may develop a mild rash; some may develop a fever of 102 or higher. Give extra fluids. Fever usually begins 17-28 DAYS after vaccine is given. Rash begins 5-26 days after. "

Edited to state:

The form also says:
"A vaccine, like any medicine, is capable of causing serious problems, such as sever allergic reactions. The risk of chickenpox vaccine causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small."

"Fever will result in 1 out of 10 people."

"Mild rash, upt to a month after vaccination. It is possible for these people to infect other member of their household, but ths is EXTREMELY rare."

"Chickenpox vaccine can prevent chickenpox. Most people who get the vaccine will not get chickenpox. But if someone who has been vaccinated DOES get chickenpox, it is usually very mild. They will have fewer spots, are less likely to have a fever, and will recover faster."

luvbug00 replied: What about your parents?? idk i don't mean to scare you but i wiki'ed this and after reading what they have to say

Congenital defects in babies
These may occur if the child's mother was exposed to VZV during pregnancy. Effects on the fetus may be minimal in nature but physical deformities range in severity from under developed toes and fingers, to severe anal and bladder malformation. Possible problems include:

Damage to brain: encephalitis, microcephaly, hydrocephaly, aplasia of brain
Damage to the eye (optic stalk, optic cap, and lens vesicles), microphthalmia, cataracts, chorioretinitis, optic atrophy.
Other neurological disorder: damage to cervical and lumbosacral spinal cord, motor/sensory deficits, absent deep tendon reflexes, anisocoria/Horner's syndrome
Damage to body: hypoplasia of upper/lower extremities, anal and bladder sphincter dysfunction
Skin disorders: (cicatricial) skin lesions, hypopigmentation

I personaly would make sal stay home until it's gone. it's a hard call concidering i don't know if you guys have savings and enough saved for sal to take the time. what about church? can you find somone to come help from there? Like i said it's a tricky situation and i hope you find a solution that is good for you and safe for the baby hug.gif hug.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied: First of all I am totally confused as to the 'controlled environment' statement. The vaccine may have been given in a controlled environment but the virus is not dependant on where she was exposed-If she has it she has it. 2ndly as far as I know there is one virus that causes Chicken Pox the Varricella Virus...I don't know of 'different' strains-It is NOT like the flu. Just because you were vaccinated doesn't mean you will not get Chicken Pox-it is supposed to lower your risk of infection and lessen the severity if you become infected. I would GREATLY question your OB and Pedi in giving your child the vaccine (I am surprised they would give chicken pox,MMR,or HepB as all of those virues have been shown to shed and would possibly expose you during your pregnancy.) I can't believe they did not preform titers on you at the beginning of your pregnancy since you have as you have said before they considered you highrisk. Aren't you going to a peri? I would demand an immediate appointment and a hospital order for blood work where they should be able to test you and get results with in hours or I would seriously consider switching doctors. Can Sal watch Isabella while you go? It is all pretty dramatic-and seems that your doctor has made some really serverly bad calls! dry.gif

Mommy2Isabella replied: ALRIGHT!!

I am going tomorrow morning for blood work. I am also going to start looking for a new doctor ... which is a scary thought for me, but I think it is what would be best for me and the baby. I don't feel that they are taking this issue serious.

As for having sal stay home or family. Like I said, I am the only option, my father is retired from the military and stays home but he is very sick < he has hep c and gets ILL a few times a year.
Sal just started working with this new company and he can't just call in and say my child has chicken pox I can't come to work today.
To top it off there is no where for me to go, maybe a hotel. But we don't know if I have them yet or not, so I can't go and risk my sisters 3 children and stay with my mom. Staying with my father is OUT OF THE QUESTION as he is ill like I mentioned above. The only place would be a hotel ...

URG ... growl.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied: You are already exposed so it won't help to go anywhere. They are actually contagious the day before they show the spots and continue to be so until every single spot is completely dry. Did you discuss the HepC with your doctor? I would be VERY concerned about exposure to that too! blink.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied:
Too late now! If she has the spots Jess is already exposed so no use sending Isabella anywhere.

Mommy2Isabella replied: Yes my dr.s and Isabellas dr.s know about the Hep C ...

That was my thing, I am already exposed type thing. But they do have medication that can counter act it!

Thanks abbie

ETA: Hep C isn't a huge concern because is only transferred through the blood. My father is VERY careful about it, as that is how he got it, working on a patient in an emergency situation ...

moped replied: Please let us know!

PrairieMom replied: hug.gif

Mommy2BAK replied: hug.gif Aww poor Isabella. hug.gif
I hope she feels better soon and that you don't contract the virus. sad.gif

On a side note..... Something that I wanted to add is that a lot of the time doctor's don't take young moms very seriously... well actually not many people at all take young moms seriously, they tend to think that we don't know what we're talking about and that we're uneducated about pregnancy and raising children, so I can understand that it's probably difficult for you to get the immediate attention that you deserve from your doc. Anyways, I think you should just continue to be persistant... and good luck if you decide to switch doctors.

Mommy2BAK replied: By the way, I'm totally lost on this subject because I actually thought chicken pox was a thing of the past, I didn't think people even got chicken pox anymore as long as they're vaccinated. It's been years and years since I've heard of anyone having them. dunno.gif

gr33n3y3z replied:
Nope they are still around a lot to be honest
I had them 3 times until the last time it was a bad case

Katie just had the shot bc she never got them when she was younger So the Dr said its bad to get them as an adult ummmm I had them wacko.gif

bunkie replied: Hugs to you and your little one. I answered your vax questions in the other thread.
Good thing is that since you are way out of your first trimester if you are exposed to chicken pox while pregnant the fetus develops natural immunity.
(NOTE THIS IS ONLY DURING LATE SECOND AND THIRD TRIMESTERS, CP BEFORE IS DANGEROUS TO A PREGNANCY)
We had a CP scare with my oldest when I was pregnant, I was so excited because I thought she caught it on her own and then my doctor told me my other baby would be immune but 2 days later it was just a nasty heat rash.

bunkie replied: Ok I have something else to say, everyone here is needlessly scaring you, what they are leaving out that Chicken Pox is only dangerous to a pregnant woman during her first trimester. Its always nice to give a FULL set of information instead of scaring the crap out of an already stressed out pregnant mother.

http://www.babycenter.com/0_chicken-pox-du...Info%407a8339f7

Mommy2Isabella replied: Thank you! Bunkie!!

I went and had my blood drawn this morning. I should know by monday wether I have immunity, have the chicken pox, or don't have immunity.

bunkie replied:
I really hope you are immune! But either way the baby will be and thats awesome so that baby will never need the CP vax. (High Five!) I have natural immunity through exposure. I was never vaxed for cp but often taken to pox parties as a child so I could catch it but didn't. Then through my teens I was exposed several more times, friends/family members. When they tested me during pregnancy they said I have natural immunity. I was quite pleased. laugh.gif

KingMom replied: Jess - let us know today what they say!

moped replied:
Any news on the blood test?

Mommy2Isabella replied: I wish, they don't take things as seriously as they should ... hence why I finally took the plunge to get a new dr ... I am going to call them after lunch though!

CantWait replied: While it's horrible that she's having a bad reaction to the vaccine, it's completely normal to break out in a few spots afterwards since that's exactly what the vaccine is, a low dose of CP. It's the same as every other vaccine.
If you had the vaccine yourself, then in reality you should be fine, however IMHO there isn't enough research of the CP vaccine yet to determine if the long terms effects of it are worthwhile.

KUP hug.gif

My2Beauties replied: I'm just curious...why is it serious if you get it while preggo? I'm just wondering for my own curiosity, what can happen?

Hon I hope you guys start to feel better.

moped replied: Have you heard back from your blood test

Mommy2Isabella replied: YEA RIGHT JEN! ...

I am so glad to be changing dr's. I meant to call yesterday but I forgot, they should have called me to let me know. I AM VERY DISSATISFIED!!!

I WILL CALL TODAY! If nothing else they should have called to say that everything turned out ok and I do have immunity to it. But NO they didn't!! WHAT PUNKS!

bunkie replied:
Its only serious in the first trimester.

congenital varicella syndrome

* Scars on the skin
* Muscle and bone defects
* Malformed limbs
* Smaller than normal head
* Blindness
* Mental retardation

ETA: The above is also not highly common.

moped replied: Sorry girl

Does Isabella still have spots?

Mommy2Isabella replied: Ya Bella does still have spots ... we call her our little chicken! LOL ... I just called them and the broad that answered said the nurse would call me back!

URG they irritate me!
