Cable internet or DSL???
MyBrownEyedBoy wrote: We can't do our broadband service in the new place, can't drill any holes in the existing structure. So what do you guys think? To do DSL, we'd have to change phone service providers or pay for a second line (our current phone provider doesn't offer DSL in our area yet). To do cable, we'd have to pay more, about $35/month. What do you have and what's the drawbacks and bonuses to it?
lovemy2 replied: Honestly I have had both and have yet to really see a difference - cable is more reliable in some senses and is a bit faster but for us for home use it isn't something that noticeable - and here its about the same price....
Twelve Volt Man replied: I've had cable internet for several years and have been completely satisfied. I have it bundled with my home phone and cable TV, so I pay for it all on the same bill.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Cable is better from our experiences.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Okay, well, I checked with cable, and we can do it with our satellite TV. I mean, we can have both. At least it's not an either-or situation. That's probably the way we'll go. I want my internet back. I'm working some pm shift work tonight which is why I'm here now.
luvmykids replied: I have DSL and haven't had any trouble. It's fast and reliable. I have it bundled through my phone company and also our cell phones. They have an option to add Direct TV in the bundle too.
kit_kats_mom replied: we have fiber optic cable. If it's available in your area (Verizon does ours but I think we were a test market) it's awesome. We love it and have had no problems.
HuskerMom replied: So am I the only person on the planet who has dial up still! I don't mind it usually, we never have any problems with it other than it being kind of slow. It's better than not having internet at all.
A&A'smommy replied: I recommend DSL
holley79 replied: We have cable and our phone service is VOnage through our cable line. It was a heck of a lot cheaper that way.
BAC'sMom replied: Cable
My2Beauties replied: We have cable at home and have no problems at all for the most part! It's pretty good. I've never had DSL but I've heard horror stories, but without having it myself I can't really comment.
redchief replied: We have DSL, full in the knowledge that most of the time cable is generally faster (except on upload, when DSL kicks cable's butt). Our decision to go with DSL was more economic than anything else. Our cable company is closely related to the devil; I think the CEO's name is Lucifer. Cable is expensive here and they still act as if they have a monopoly. We have satellite for TV. Our cable company is TV and ISP or nothing.
I looked at some of the pro's and cons and agree with some and disagree with others. I think much has to do with the redundancy of services in the areas being served.
Here only: Cable Pros: Download speed (except in midsummer when shared nodes cause lag), ability to bundle with television and telephone services.
Cable Cons: Cost, midsummer lag, probability that no system upgrades are forthcoming in the foreseeable future, setup nearly always requires technical assistance, lack of competition.
DSL Pros: Reliable service (goes down less than cable here - the cable system is pretty old and the cable company isn't doing any upgrades), cost, upload speed, ease of set-up, knowledgeable, available technical assistance (24 hours, 7 days - cable company is open during regular business hours, though there is an emergency business line that if you know it you can get help after hours. They don't advertise this number, but it's been shared throughout the firehouse), plenty of competition for your business keeps rates low, coupled with satellite television we don't have to do business with the devil (AKA Comcast )
DSL Con: It's slower generally.
MommyToAshley replied: We currently have both cable and DSL. Since we work out of our home and our work is internet based, we have to have a back-up if one goes out. I tend to prefer the cable over the DSL. But, I think it depends on the speed that is available through your cable company and DSL... not all cable and not all DSL are the same. I'd check them bout out, compare the prices and then make your decision. But, for me, I prefer the cable.
lisar replied: Well here where I live the cable is the faster than the dsl provider so I recommend cable.
