Calling all hippies!
PrairieMom wrote: I just read a good article about being an organic mom in my "cookie" magazine. It just came in the mail yesterday. It mentioned some of the hidden chemicals that are in children's toys, and plastics, and even cosmetics. I don't know if it can be found online or not, the magazine isn't out in stores yet, its Feb. issue. Just thought someone may like to check it out@
Calimama replied: Ooo what magazine is it? I'll buy it in Feb.
PrairieMom replied: its called cookie.
I don't really like it that much, but they had a cool bag you could get as a free gift so I got it. This article gave some good resources tho, and kinda opened my eyes a bit. Like, did you know that there are toxic chemicals in the stuff they use to fire proof your mattresses? and vinyl contains lead and phthalates (like the vinyl in your mattress pad? it was just stuff I hadn't thought about.
Calimama replied: Yeah I had NO clue. Thanks!!
grandma replied: I'm an old real hippy that's given up - there's too much out there that's gonna kill us anyhow nowadays!
PrairieMom replied: thats true. The more you read the worse it gets.
kimberley replied: ITA!
one week something's good for me, the next it will kill me. i believe living in moderation should give me a fair chance
PrairieMom replied: unless it kills you first. If its not one thing its another. We just gotta try the best we can right?
gr33n3y3z replied: no hippies here lol
kimberley replied: i know. it gets ridiculous.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I knew about the vinyl stuff. That's why I just went out and bought the kids a lead-free lunchbag from Whole Foods the other day. For only $6 too, what a deal! The lining in those kids lunchbags, the vinyl ones, have lead in them. I know you guys are all sick of it, but when it comes to what my kids eat, and what their food is stored in, that is really important to me. For other hippy-like moms (LOL, I have to laugh at the title ), look for bags that specifically say "lead-free", they are out there.
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: ITA. You can never be too careful when it comes to food or food storage.
Annd the excuse that it doesn't matter - it DOES. Think about what the future generations will be like. Think about what the contamination is doing to your body, your children's bodies, and the environment. Yes, it seems hopeless, but if more & more people insist on safe products, they will be made. There's already lots out there, you just have to find them.
jcc64 replied: ITA, Sewingmama! I'm the biggest cynic there is, yet I don't believe in throwing caution to the wind when it comes to toxicity and my kids. Knowledge is power, and you're absolutely right- the more we demand for ourselves and our families as consumers, the more we'll get. Business people simply follow the money trail. If we insist on chemical free products, and refuse to buy otherwise, healthier products will come to the market and drive the prices down. Ditto for organics.
Yes, I did know that. In addition, similiar chemicals, which are known carcinogens, are put in flame retardant childrens' sleepwear, which is why I insisted my kids only wear pj's that were 100% cotton. Don't apologize for being "hippies", ladies, fly your freak flag proudly!
PrairieMom replied: I am a semi-hippi. I am slowly being converted.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Ya'll know me enough already to KNOW darn well I fly MY hippie freak flag wayyyy too proudly.
MommyToAshley replied: I didn't know that about the jammies. I do buy cotton jammies though.. they're just more comfy.
