Can someone tell me?

jcc64 wrote: What is Twitter? Is it like Facebook or Myspace?

A&A'smommy replied: never heard of it??

Mommy2Isabella replied: Twitter is like a glorified status update smile.gif

Like on Facebook where you have your status, thats all twitter is, you can follow other people! People can follow you. Used a lot for people who blog!!

DH loves it and he is big into the blogosphere smile.gif

lisar replied:
Thanks. I have never heard of it before till now

jcc64 replied: Wait, what do you mean by status update, exactly? I am familiar with Myspace and Facebook--have seen people's pages (primarily my kids') but am not a user myself. Is a status update the part about how many "friends" you have? What else is included?

DillsMommy replied: It's just a place to give updates about what you are doing.
Like "Mandy is now taking a nap"
"Mandy is getting ready for work" stuff like that I believe. Kinda silly if you ask me.

Mommy2Isabella replied: with facebook ...

status update is at the top of their profile it normally says

your username for example
Jessica is "status update"

Twitter is all about what are you doing?
So theirs is a box where you can type 140 characters and say ...

"I hate it when Jimmy calls me at 5 am."

Your "followers" on twitter can then reply back to you or send you direct messages

When they reply back it shows
@jessic- Me Too!
Or something similar.

With twitter, all that is included is "followers" which is like "friends" on the other two sites. Direct messages similar to "PM" on here or on other sites. and a status update.

When you "update your status" it is called Tweeting.

People can choose to follow you, but you don't have to follow them Where as with facebook, you have to be someones friend if they ae your friend if that makes sense.

I hope I am explaining this good enough...

jcc64 replied: Actually, I just googled it and checked out a free demo on the Twitter site. It seems so stupid, tbh. "I'm mowing the lawn." "I'm eating dinnner." WHO CARES?!!!!!!! I also read that Twitter sells your info to 3rd parties--awesome, another way to infiltrate my inbox!
I don't get it. How is this necessary or any more useful that texting or im'ing? I'm taking a Computers in the Classroom class at my teacher's college, and I'm supposed to be setting up blogs and podcasts and Twitter accounts, and though I certainly see the usefulness of the first two, I totally don't get how Twitter would be useful as an academic application.

Danalana replied: laugh.gif I have Facebook, but had never heard the term "twitter". It makes me laugh to say it!

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Yeah.. I didn't get it at first either. Kinda dumb, actually.

mom21kid2dogs replied: I'm not much help other than to say that some of the news streams must use it as well. I know Science Friday on NPR always says you can twitter them at a certain number. Quite frankly, it always makes me laugh when they say it! rolleyes.gif

cameragirl21 replied: just as an aternative explanation/purpose--during the recent Israeli operation in Gaza, journalists were barred so it was very hard to get information regarding how many soldiers may have been killed, how many senior hamas members may have been killed, how the war was going, etc.
Well, Al Jazeera already had a crew in Gaza so the only news you could get from within Gaza was from them and I was checking their twitter constantly as they had up to the minute updates on the happenings over there.
So it does serve a purpose beyond just what an individual person is doing in their day to day habits.
