Check this out..unbelievable!!!!!! - *pregnancy related*

Boys r us wrote: no..not me!

but this is pretty interesting!!!! Next time I found out we have a little one on the way, I will definitely be getting one!
I hate the long 5 month wait for the ultrasound!!!!

http://www.pregnancystore.com/baby_gender_mentor.htm

mckayleesmom replied: hmmmm interesting...however I would still want to know for sure with an ultra sound

Boys r us replied: Oh I would still get an ultrasound..but this is actually far more advanced than an ultrasound gender reading..it's DNA..instead of "... I think those are boy parts"

NummyMommy replied: I think these links may interest you Canada Ban ....... Ethics you should also note the disclaimer on the page you posted...."In case you are not certain if you are eligible for the test or whether this type of testing is legal in the state that you reside in, please consult your doctor." Plus I think the 200% money back guarantee is a little far-fetched concidering you have to prove there wasn't a "vanishing" twin. Just food for thought smile.gif

A&A'smommy replied: This actually bothers me... I just can't put my finger on why it bothers me!

kimberley replied: ohmy.gif ohmy.gif not only does the $275 for the test and lab fees make me feel ill, but i am with Jessy Ann, something just doesn't sit right with me on this one. unsure.gif

NummyMommy replied: Its probably the same reason it bothers the ethics committees....the ability to know this early gives couples the option of aborting a perfectly healthy pregnancy for the sole reason of gender preferrence. Its a huge debate right now...and probably the reason for the disclaimer I quoted in my other post. The company that makes those tests want to protect themselves from lawsuits.....and why you have to call them to order it if you live in Canada. I'm not meaning to start a debate about abortion or anything....I just think people should know why its controversial.

MomToMany replied: It made me sick when I heard about this.

Boys r us replied: Well, I think we can all figure out why it's controversial. I actually did some research on this and the maker of the test says that it's really NOT gender he hopes that his test will be used for one day, but rather a non-invaisive way to tell about genetic problems, down syndrome and such. It really is a wonderful tool if they are able to get it to be used for those purposes. But to me, a person who would never abort based on gender, it's a very cool thing that someone has found a way to push science to it's existing limits and do away with the waiting game for moms who want to know now!! Anything you encounter in life could be used in a negative way, one thing we have to remember is that it's not the makers of this test who are doing anything wrong, it's some of the people who may use it.
They've actually done research on it and found that in the US abortions for gender selection are relatively non-existant. The countries where it is prevalent are India and China...and those countries have a high rate of late term abortions b/c of finding out their baby is a girl. So, this new product isn't really doing anything to promote abortion based on gender, but rather if the parents do abort at least they can do it in the 1st trimester instead of the 2nd or 3rd, which is a practice that disgusts me!

mom2tripp replied:
C'mon now blink.gif

MomToMany replied:

Just curious as to where you got your information.

How do they KNOW that people won't abort their perfectly healthy baby based on gender?? I'm sure some people WILL! I am PRO-LIFE, would NEVER have an abortion no matter WHAT.

If it's for finding out genetic problems, WHY are they advertising it as a gender prediction test?

jacobsmama replied: I was going to say when I first read the post that this was going to strike up a problem b/c if you know the sex then you know the chromosomes so what if they have an extra one or downs chroms then would they have to tell you??? Then I read on to you all posts and I agree it is wrong. IF you want to know have an u/s if you want to know about genetic problems then you need to see a lisenced DR who can do an Amnio and get the accurate results to you with the right statistics.

Very bad test to try and offer...the sad part people will do it. sleep.gif

coasterqueen replied: I don't want to get into an abortion debate because my feelings are private on this one. I do believe this test can be used for the wrong reasons BUT I think it would be awesome to use if I was ever pregnant again. *I* know I wouldn't abort my child based on gender but I would LOVE to know much earlier if I can. I know the whole "knowing gender early" thing has really gotten out of control over the years and I've contributed to it, but I am one of those people who like to know early and I'm fine that others don't think I should. tongue.gif 2cents.gif

TANNER'S MOM replied: Ummmmm...

I know ALOT of women who pay more than $245.00 for Ultra Sound..especially if they already had one ...and they couldnt tell what the baby was.

I have friends who said Oh we will pay it b/c the insurance wont..

Is that different???

A&A'smommy replied: its not the money that bothers me because I would pay 250 buckes for an u/s those are incredible!! But why do you need to find out the gender so early, I mean the first thing I thought when I saw this on the news OH NO people are going to use to the abort the baby.. I wont even have an amnio done because I feel like it could be used for evil but like the amnio I know there are people who get it done just so they can be prepared which that is okay but I know it will be used for evil and that is what scares me. I'm pro life all the way so I don't care if its a 5wks old or 40wks old

KingMom replied: I just want to add that I think it funny that a debate about abortion stemmed from someone saying they would want to know early in their pregnancy so they could be more prepared, not whether or not they would be able to decide whether or not to keep their fetus!

I'm not posting my thoughts on abortion here but would say it would interesting to find out earlier so that you could prepare earlier, like the nursery and such. I think that is why most on this site would want this.

FYI - I opted NOT to find out what we were having when I was pregnant and was very happy with my decision.

Mom2Boyz replied: I agree with Karen on this one thumb.gif There are people out there who would use it for the wrong reason, but it could also be used for the right reason. I would never abort for ANY reason, so if I were to get pg again, I think it would be awesome to be able to find out the gender so early. I hated waiting until my 20 week u/s for them to tell me it "LOOKS" like a boy. Preparing for a baby would be so much easier if you were POSITIVE of the gender.

TANNER'S MOM replied: ITA w/ Karen

MomToMany replied: Why is it so necessary to find out the gender? I just don't understand why people have to "plan" so far in advance. To shop more?? People hate gender neutral colors that much rolleyes.gif ?

TANNER'S MOM replied: I wanted to know... I really didnt' have money to waste on pink.. or blue..

And I wanted my baby to have the right color. I wanted to able to say his name in my belly...that kind of stuff.

I guess I think....if we have the techonlogy for stuff...good stuff then use it.

I would in no way be dissapointed either way... I was just soo excited to know.

I think it is a personal decision...some as when you have the ultra sound...do you want to know ...yes or no????\

This isn't for everyone.....but I guess it's okay for the people who want to use it.
I don't find it anymore morally wrong then finding out the sex on an ulta sound...

mom2tripp replied:
BECAUSE IT'S FUN!!!!! I will not start an abortion debate BUT.....just because you want to find out the sex of your child a little early doesn't mean you're going to abort it if you find out it's not the sex you want.

In saying this, yes there are a lot of sick people in the world that WOULD do this BUt they would also do it later when they had a US to find out the sex!!!

coasterqueen replied:
It's just a personal thing. For some it's more than that. Some of us *anal/OCD* people NEED or it can seriously over-run your life for the 9 months you are pg. No joke, I'm seriously not kidding on this.

But I guess I can ask the same thing...WHY do you have to wait til the baby pops out? Because it's a suprise? Well it's just as much of a suprise at 20 weeks versus 40 weeks, you just don't have to wait as long. Even waiting 5 or 10 weeks you still are suprised.

IMO it's a personal choice that should be respected. If we are going to sit here and respect people for their parenting choices we should be able to respect them for some measly choice to find out what sex they are having when pg. rolleyes.gif

I have a ton more I can say to answer your question but it will turn into an abortion update so I won't go there.

mom2tripp replied:
Couldn't have said it better myself biggrin.gif

kimberley replied:
umm i am canadian, so that is where the money comment came from blush.gif . i have never had to pay for that stuff (u/s, blood work, dr visits) so it is foreign to me why anyone would.. but i guess it is the norm for you guys. wink.gif

i agree it is personal preference, but i would never have use for such a product and do cringe at the thought of babies being murdered because of such a test. don't be fooled that north america doesn't abort based on gender. you can take a person out of their home country but you can't necessarily change their beliefs, or the beliefs they instill in their future generations. i opted not to find out with my 3 previous kids but did ask in the u/s for this baby. she couldn't tell for sure the gender and i am fine with that.

My2Beauties replied: I dont' see how this turned into an abortion topic either unsure.gif but I for one would love to know what my baby was at 5 weeks gestation because I'm with Karen, OCD when it comes this. It's not about pink and blue it's about names, talking to my baby, etc.... I would just want to know. cool.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I didn't mean to turn it into an abortion thing... but anyway I agree it can't be that much different finding out at 5wks rather than 20wks we found out and were happy that we did. I WON"T use this because I don't see the point in spending that much money on it when you can find out at a regular check up for little to no cost because insurance convers it. Anyway if you have the money, can't wait and want to find out NOW then go for it.. but I wouldn't want to get my hopes up that early sleep.gif

luvbug00 replied: I'd want too know especialy since th u/s was read as Mya as a BOY! I would've bought that thing because I knew in my gut it was a girl. But My poor child had to wear boy clothes for her first 6 months because we couldn't afford anything else.

NummyMommy replied: Ok first of all I want to apologize for turning this into a debate that seems to have touched on some very personal beliefs...I didn't intend that...I'm sorry...I really just thought that some of you had overlooked the legal issues of this test. There ARE legal issues involved here and some don't have anything to do with abortion. As a consumer I would want to know if something is #1 safe #2 legal #3 trustworthy. That goes for anything I buy. I have seen many "experts" question this test for a variety of reasons. The fact that Canada is concidering a legal ban on this product....for whatever reason....raises a red flag for me. As I have said in a different post I am really worried about the issues of politics, ethics and embryos. It goes way beyond gender, abortion and how much time you have to pick out wallpaper. But that is another debate blush.gif My point is its not as simple as it looks.

Boys r us replied: rolling_smile.gif This is killing me!! I really can't help but to laugh at how this post turned out!! blush.gif Anybody want to argue with me on the color of the sun emlaugh.gif

luvbug00 replied: It's ornge! sleep.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
With my first pregnancy, I did a lot of research before deciding to have an amnio. The amnio is very invasive and there is a slight chance it can cause problems to a prefectly healthy pregnancy. I read about research being done, where they can pick the urine up from the fetus in the mother's bloodstream. They can then use the cells just like they do in a amnio. To test for a trisomy, they actually grow the cell for two weeks to detect if there is a chromosonial defect. However, this procedure was not perfected and not available at the time I had the amnio. I would definitely have chosen this procedure if it was as accurate and non-invasive.

So, yes, I can see the medical benefit of this application, but just like any other break-thru, someone always looks for the best way to make a buck. And, I suppose gender testing is a big market... just look at how many women want to find an excuse to have an U/S so they can see the gender of their baby. I'm guilty of wanting to know.

NummyMommy replied:
You know that brings up a good point....I think if this were a test done in a doctors office a lot of the controversy would go away, dont you think?

coasterqueen replied:
No, don't apologize. I think you brought up a very healthy point that needed to be addressed. We need to hear all sides in order to draw our conclusions.

Nichole - I know this wasn't what you wanted out of this thread but really it is nice to have healthy debates and makes us all a bit more worldly IMO. biggrin.gif

I'll debate the color of the sun with ya. What color do you want to say it is? emlaugh.gif wink.gif j/k

mammag replied: Just thought I'd add my thoughts since I've been busy all day and missed this....

As you would all guess I am highly against abortion in any way.....no big surprise. I can see the concern with this product but at the same time, if it were available to me and I could afford it (without stretching to) I would have used it. I couldn't wait to find out...I don't really know why because there were pros and cons to boy or girl for me and I wouldn't have been upset either way. It does scare me to think that it would be used for that purpose but at the same time, I don't think you should ban a product, taking it away from people who wouldn't abuse, to protect against the minority that would. There are plenty of things that this has been done with (ahem.....firearms) and I just don't agree with that as a policy. I guess I think that if you want to stop abortion you go to the sorce and that test isn't it. I won't go further into that whole thing....

Now........can someone please invent a test to see what you would have if you were to get pregnant right now so that I could guarantee another baby girl for myself... wink.gif laugh.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
huh uh, it's yellow. sun.gif
