Climbing out of the crib already??!!

Maddy'sMommy wrote: Yesterday morning I woke up to a big BANG in my baby's room. She climbed out of her crib and fell! Luckily she is fine... just scared her. Anyways... she is only 13 months, and I don't know what to do?? She is too young for a toddler bed, she would never sleep, just play in her room... plus I would worry about her in there with all that freedom by herself. For right now she is still in the crib with pillows all around it. It is just very nerve wrecking b/c I am so worried she will do it again and hurt herself. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks!

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Sorry. my ds started climbing out at about 11 months so he got a big boy bed for his first birthday. He did really well and would not get out and would sit and wait for us to come get him for months after the transition.

MamaJAM replied: I've seen a tent-thing that you can put over the top of her crib -- I've never used one so I don't know if they work at all though.

The only thing I can say is maybe it is time for a toddler bed. Just ultra-babyproof her room so she'll be safe. You can use refrigerator latches on the dresser drawers to keep her from opening them and emptying them. Also - an eye-hook high up on the closet door....or a doorknob cover....will keep her out of the closet.
If you shut her door at night - then put a doorknob cover on the inside of the door so she can't get out and wander the house. If you don't usually shut her door at night - but a babygate for her doorway.

My youngest left his crib at 15 months because of climbing dangrously on the dresser attached to it. We've never had too many problems with him not sleeping. Some nights he'll play before laying down....or get up and play for a while in the middle of the night -- but most of the time he lays right down.

Maddy'sMommy replied: I guess I could try the toddler bed I am just worried about her being in there with all that freedom KWIM?? She definitly would not stay on the bed, she is always moving and into everything.

BAC'sMom replied:

My son too was climbing out of crib at 11 months, but he was walking by 9 months.
I say it's time for a toddler bed blink.gif

Maddy'sMommy replied: Yeah I think you all are right and I need to do the switch to a toddler bed. That was my first thought too, but my husband and mil went against me. I just need to get her room ultra baby proof so i don't worry. Thanks for the imput.

moped replied: I have to be the bad one here and say that it liley won't happen agian for a while so you could still use the crib - I am with your DH and MIL!

Maddy'sMommy replied: I will probably use the crib (with pillows around it) a little longer until I get a toddler bed and the room baby proofed.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: It's a tough call, but maybe try a mattress on the floor and see how she does. Make sure there are no toys or literally anything for her to get into around the room.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied:
once Matt climbed out the first time he would not stay in for more than a minute. He definately didn't forget that he figured out the escape

My3LilMonkeys replied:
ITA that you could give it a few nights and see what happens. Madison got out once about a month ago and hasn't since. We're still not quite sure if she managed to climb out on her own or if Brooke helped her though. Madison is still in her crib and will be staying there (hopefully) for a while.

ilovemybaby replied: Abby climbed out/fell out of her crib at 13/14 months too. We put her in a single bed with a bed rail. She was fine. She sometimes played for a while and then she would climb back into bed and go to sleep. Now she just goes to sleep straight away.
I don't think she is too young for a toddler bed. I would try it.

ilovemybaby replied:
Yeah you can do that too. You could use pillows or a mattress or soft toys. Either way though, she could get out again and it may be best to child proof now.

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
Thats what I was worried about too when we switched Alex from crib to Toddler Bed just a short time ago. Its scary to think that they could get seriously hurt trying to get out.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: Also my brother was not much older than a year old when my parents had to put him in a bed because he was getting out of his crib on his own. All kids are differant so she may be ready even though you think she is a little young still.

Maddy'sMommy replied: Yeah I think I will baby proof everything in her room this weekend and try the toddler bed. So far this week she hasn't tried to get out again...except when I go get her she put her foot over the top!! I think she definitly will try it again soon though. Thanks for the tips, and advice everyone. smile.gif

ilovemybaby replied: EEK! Is the crib on the lowest setting?

Brias3 replied: CRIB TENT. We had to use one eventually in the course of the past three kids as the toddler bed transition wasn't going to work either. Good luck!

asweetnectarwomb replied: My Hannah got her toddler bed when she was 18 mo. I decided to get her one after I let her practice with a matress for about a half month.

I watched her everyday and I never saw her get off the matress. Then she got her pinky bed wink.gif

Well, all moms are worried about their babies (no matter how old they're, for us they're always babies, right? ;D). So, besides checking out whether the kid is ready or not, you, moms, also need to check yourself out, are you ready?
