Clogged tear ducts?

TeagansMom609 wrote: Matthew got a cold from Teagan and has had a stuffy nose for about a week now. Well a couple days ago he started getting yellow gook and crustys in his eyes after he would wake up. I called the Dr. today and he said its clogged tear ducts from his stuffy nose. He told me to use cottonballs with warm water and wipe from the corner of his eyes outwards and massage the inner corners of his eyes to help unclog the ducts. Has anyone else's baby get this? If so, did it go away by massage?

My3LilMonkeys replied: Yes! Madison's were clogged in her left eye when she was about 2-3 months old. All we did was warm washclothes and light massage and it cleared up just fine after 2 weeks.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Jordan actually had blocked tear ducts at birth. She was seriously goopy. She finally grew out of it at about 4 weeks old. The massage should help it.

luvmykids replied: Yep, warm washcloths and massage. It only lasted about 3 weeks with Colt.
ETA: Don't you hate when they get sick this little? Poor baby. Hope he feels better soon. wub.gif

holley79 replied: Annika's were clogged at birth. I was given Erithimiacin (sp?), told to use warm water and a washcloth or cotton ball and to massage it. Seems to have worked.

I'm sorry that Matthew got sick. I hope that he's feeling better.

TeagansMom609 replied: Anyone know what part of the eye to massage? Do I massage his cornea or on the side of the nose?

luvmykids replied: If I remember correctly (no guarantee!) it's the inner corner of the eye area from top to bottom, KWIM?

A&A'smommy replied: Alyssa had one when she was that age.... I did the cotton ball thing and the dr. gave me some eye drops it went away with eye drops!

ediep replied: Jason was born with both tear ducts clogged. The doc told me to use a damp cotton ball woth warm water at massage the corner of the eye, rigt next to the nose.

It got a little better....he didn't wake up with the crusty eyes anymore, but his eyes teared until we took hom for tear duct surgery recently. He is 3. Actually, one of his eyes still tears a bit

TeagansMom609 replied: Did your child have yellow gooey crusty yellow stuff in their eyes that seals their eyes shut when they had clogged tear ducts?

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Okay, this is going to sound funny, but my sister's ped told her to use a tiny dab of baby shampoo (like Johnsons) on a wet cotton ball or q-tip and massage that in the corner of the eye. I did this with Wil and it cleared it up right away! I know the shampoo sounds like it would hurt, but of course it's tearless (only use tearless) and it somehow cleans the duct as well as rinse it out. My ped said this was fine, but to be really careful not to massage too much. Sometimes they just work themselves out on their own.

Yes, it's crusty and yellow and they have a hard time opening the eye when they wake up. I would talk to your ped if it becomes too gooey or green in color though. That's a sign of infection.

CosmetologyMommy replied: my brother had that and he is 13 now and even now sometimes he wakes up with goop in his eyes!?

ediep replied:
Jason only had that when he was first born until he was a few weeks old. every day, I'd clean it with a warm damp cotton ball and after a week or 2, it stopped happening
