Credit card fraud on my bank acct. - so mad!!!

DillsMommy wrote: I'm so mad I could scream!! growl.gif Some how someone got into our bank account or just got one of our debit card numbers and is going on a massive shopping spree. We found out yesterday when DH tried to use the card to get lunch and it was denied...hmmm...somethings wrong. So he called me and I checked online (we have online banking where you can see all transactions) and it was overdrawn $400!!! As I start looking through everything, I notice 4 things from NY. I've never been to NY in my life. So I go straight over to our bank and explain to them that something happened and someone has our info. The lady was real understanding and said everything will be taken care of and we will get every penny back, but they can't completely do everything until all of the transactions have posted. And they still haven't all posted. Our acct. is still overdrawn and we have no money. Thankfully DH still has his paycheck from last week, so he'll cash that and we'll use that until everything gets fixed. I don't know what to do. The lady canceled our debit cards, but maybe we should close the acct. all together. I have no idea how this happened. We keep all cards in our wallets at all times. It makes me so mad, if only I could meet this person!! It must have been a female because the purchases are from Marshalls, bed bath and beyond, a beauty supply store, and more...... To make things worse, we have bills that automatically come out around the first of the month and checks in the mail. It's such a mess! growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif

mom2my2cuties replied: This happens a whole lot. Especailly if you travel, because sometimes companies instead of doing a "swipe" they imprint your card. And some companies aren't as strict about things like not putting the full card number on your reciept and things like that. This happened to me a few times on my travels and it never takes them long to fix it. But it sounds like this person must have a lot of your personal information if the purchases were made in store and not online?

Because online you have to have the mailing address and stuff like that. Do you think someone might have hacked into your bank? That happened to a lady I met not to long ago someone hacked into her bank account and got themselves shipped a copy of her debit card that way

DillsMommy replied:
At first I thought it was only the card number they had and all the purchases where online. But I just checked our acct. again today and there's one from a "yesterdays diner" As far as I know...you can't order food from a diner online..... So I don't know for sure.

lisar replied: I am sorry that happened to you. I hope the bank gets it straight for you. It happened to my sister and her bank had her money back within 24 hours. She also cancelled the whole account and opened a new one. Just to be safe thats what I would do.

hopefulmomtobe replied: Oh NO!! I would be really ticked!!! I'm sorry...this really sucks for you guys!! sad.gif If I find her, I will kick her butt for you!!! I think I would close the account and start over fresh. I would also report this to the police because they can track down and maybe catch her, I bet this isnt her first time.

DillsMommy replied:
I thought about calling the police, but I didn't think they would do anything unless it was like thousands of dollars or complete identity theft.....

Danalana replied: Man, that stinks! I'm glad they are going to get it worked out for you though.
hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif I'm sorry...

kit_kats_mom replied:
oh, the cops will probably not be able to do anything yet. But if they ever catch the theif, it would help if they have info from you. I know that a lot of customer info was stolen from TJ Maxx/marshalls lately.

mom2my2cuties replied: Actually they will take it pretty seriously. Especially this day in time, because of security reasons. And you can order food online. There are lots of resturants who have thier menus online, but I think you should seriously call the places of business, the local branches and say Hey someone is using my card fraudulently at your establishment.

Calimama replied: That's horrible!! People these days. growl.gif

MommyToAshley replied: OH NO! Sorry that happened to you!

We don't use a debit card for that very reason. We charge everything and then pay the balance off at the end of each month. We don't carry a balance, we use our credit card just like a debit card. The reason is that with a debit card, you have to go through the process of getting your money back if there is fraud and that can take time. It can really tie up your funds, as you are unfortunately experiencing. With a credit card, there is no money out of your pocket, they just have to clear your account... much easier. Just thought I would share, you may want to reconsider before getting another debit card. I would also never use my debit card online... again the money comes directly out of your account.

Good luck... I hope it is resolved quickly.

DillsMommy replied: Thanks for the suggestions. I will talk with Tom and maybe we will report it to the police. At least if this person gets caught she/he won't be able to do this to someone else.

sunrosejenn replied: this happened to my mom on Monday. the charges came to total $1002.86 from Romania all done in 1 hour. 5-6 weeks ago they had attempted to take her money. this time they succeeded. they can close down the debit/atm part of your account so it doesn't keep happening.

she had looked in her account to check something and 1hr later checked it again and the charges were going through. she went to the bank right away to file dispute charges.

now mind you the new debit/atm card is only 2-3 weeks old and she used it once at a local beauty salon her friend owns. so how did they get the # in Romania??? and her old debit card she used locally as well 3-4 times in 4 years and neither had been used online.

did you file dispute charges? if not please do so.

once things are straightened out you need to close out your account and open a new one as it'll happen again if you don't....just ask my mom.

for some reason my mom's bank only gave her a new debit/atm card the first time when the attemps were made. anytime there are attemps made or charges go through the account should be closed.

once they have access they can get it again easily. good luck on getting it all straigntened out.

and since this did happen in the US filing a police report is the way to go. they can catch them. my mom didnt file once since it was in Romania.

my mom had all her money back but the end of the working day yesterday and this happened on Monday afternoon.

Jackie012007 replied: I actually watched a thing on Datelina last night about this... you'd be surprised how easily people can get your info. Yesterday's Diner is in New York City, near Queens (New Hyde Park, actually) - your thief must be in that area. Sorry you are having to go through this hug.gif
