Dark walls, dark floors?

coasterqueen wrote: I painted my master bath in a medium teal color. My floors are a cream - more towards white. I'm going to replace the vinyl flooring with a new vinyl flooring. I don't want to do ceramic right now as this is a semi-master bath remodel. When we do a full remodel we'll tear things up and put things (tub, etc) in different locations so I don't want the expense of ceramic right now. My question is if you have a dark color on the wall, would a darker floor look better? Dh's cousin is a professional painter and he says he sees more homes where if there is a dark color on the wall, they go with a darker floor (as far as tile or vinyl). I am leaning more towards the darker sample I picked out, but was just curious what others think about that "rule". I put a lighter sample on the floor and it seems to look weird to me, but DH liked it. Decisions....decisions....I'm not good with decorating decisions. tongue.gif wacko.gif

moped replied: Ummmm I am trying to picture it and it sounds good, but is the bathroom a good size????

Calimama replied: It's going to make your bathroom seem small IMO. If you have a lot of natural light and a big space I'd go for it.

coasterqueen replied: It's a fairly decent size and gets a lot of light. I'm not so concerned about it looking small, I guess. I go in there to do my business, shower, brush teeth, do hair, etc. So we are really in there a minimal amount of time in the scheme of things.

Here are 4 pics I have of the bathroom. Pictures make it look small, IMO, though. I know a lot of people won't like the color, but we do. happy.gif These pics aren't of the room done - the first two are only after we cut-in.

coasterqueen replied: Another view. It's hard to get a whole view pic. What you don't see is the shower area and the toilet room. Then my master closet is off this room as well.

coasterqueen replied: Of the flooring choices. Don't mind the plant. blush.gif

coasterqueen replied: #4

moped replied: Oh that is a GREAT bathroom, really big! Ok, so why not go dark floors? That will look great!!!!! It will be very very nice!

CantWait replied: THE DARKER IS ACTUALLY MUCH NICER IMO. I CAN'T ACTUALLY SEE HINTS OF THE WALL COLOUR IN IT IF YOU LOOK REALLY CLOSE. I LOVE THE COLOUR. AND THE WALL COLOUR REALLY ISN'T DARK AT ALL.

SORRY FOR THE CAPS, I'M TOO LAZY RIGHT NOW TO CHANGE IT LOL

lovemy2 replied: Def the dark - big room, lots of light and it will tone down the paint a bit - don't mean that in a bad way at all - I really like that color - the floor will ground it a bit though - but then again - what do I know blush.gif blush.gif but love the bathroom!!

coasterqueen replied: Thanks! Below is a pic of the walls after painted. We have some touching up to do, etc. We still have fixtures to replace, put the shower door up, etc. I got my lights and mirrors up, but not sure I like the color of the mirrors. They were supposed to look like a brushed nickel, but they look darker against the brushed nickel lights. sad.gif

This pic makes the room look darker, but it was taken at dusk when the sun wasn't shining in.

coasterqueen replied: Here's the mirrors......apologize that I didn't clean them yet. I hate my vanity, but we aren't changing that. That's when we do major demo. tongue.gif which may be never. happy.gif

Calimama replied: I would go darker, no doubt! It's plenty big, plenty of light, and your paint color isn't that dark! I love it!

mom21kid2dogs replied: It's much easier to change the wall color than the floor color. Pick the flooring you really like.

coasterqueen replied:
That's easy...I like the dark. I have a similar floor like this in my basement bathroom but it's real ceramic, though. I LOVE that bathroom. I think I'm set on the dark.

Although I must disagree with you 100% about it being easier to change the wall color. I'd much rather pay someone to change the flooring than paint that bathroom again. tongue.gif laugh.gif I only did 1/2 of the cuttin' in and I HATED it. I DESPISE painting with every fiber of my being. happy.gif blush.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied:
laugh.gif I hate painting, too, which is why I married my husband! OK . . .how's this~It's much CHEAPER to replace wall color than flooring . . .better?

Our Lil' Family replied: I love the darker choice, I think it looks great with the color, which I also love!! Good job Karen, you don't give yourself enough credit! thumb.gif

My2Beauties replied: I like it I think it looks good.

coasterqueen replied:
Thanks. blush.gif That is very nice of you to say.

I swear I've changed decor in my house a 1000 times wasting so much money because I question if things look right. rolleyes.gif My poor husband has learned to deal with it, but I know it drives him crazy. tongue.gif I've spent the last 4 nights tossing and turning wondering if I should change the color. Then I tell myself I love it, then I tell myself I'm not sure. I'm the most indecisive person on the planet. blush.gif blush.gif blush.gif

coasterqueen replied:
laugh.gif True! Although...the flooring place said if I didn't like the flooring once it's put in I have 90 days to change my mind. I think they just charge me labor to replace it. tongue.gif Still expensive though.

Yes, thank goodness my husband used to build houses for a living or else I'd be in trouble. laugh.gif

grapfruit replied: I like the darker too. Although I was expecting MUCH darker walls from the description!! I like the color, but even if it were a darker teal it'd still look good!

MommyToAshley replied: I am glad you included the pictures. From the description, I was leaning towards the lighter colored floor, but after seeing the pictures I really like the dark floor. I think it ties everything together nicely... the wall color, the wood trim, and the fixtures. If you ever decided to repaint you could go with just about any color with that flooring. Good choice! thumb.gif

jcc64 replied: I, along with everyone else, vote for the dark. I do like light flooring with dark walls, but:
1. I wouldn't qualify that paint color as dark.
2. I wouldn't qualify the lighter floor as light enough.
The thing to remember about floors and walls is that you want contrast so they compliment rather than compete with one another. The reason I think the dark works better than the lighter choice is b/c the lighter one is too close to the paint color in terms of weight. The dark makes your walls "pop" in a good way. I like the paint color, Karen- we painted our bedroom a midtone teal-ish blue (substantially darker than yours') and still went with a very dark wood floor, and I'm very happy with it. Someday when it's finished I'll get around to posting pics.
Great work-- bathroom looks great.

coasterqueen replied: Thanks ladies.

To me the color is dark. I actually think the pictures don't show how dark it really is...or at least to me. tongue.gif Also, the light in that room really plays with the color..unfortunately. Sometimes I LOVE the color when the light is just right and when it's not it's too "loud" for me - Ryan feels the same way. I do think it will look nice when it all comes together.

Thank you again for all your comments. I really do appreciate them. hug.gif hug.gif

jcc64 replied: I know what you mean about the effect of light on a paint color. It literally took me the better part of a year to settle on a color, and even then, I think I went through 3 or 4 different versions of that color before committing to one. I am a complete "PITA" when it comes to paint colors, probably b/c I spent so many years working with color in very picky ways in my career.
I also think when you choose a color that has a lot of two colors in it--in both of our cases, it's blue with a lot of green in it, it tends to be less stable in appearance than a purer color, kwim? Consequently, sometimes I love the color of my room, and other times, I'm ready to get the drop cloths out and start all over, again!!!

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I like the flooring that is underneath the first layer best. Not the darkest one right under the plant, but the one to the left of the top layer. biggrin.gif
