Do you find it tacky...

Today is my nephew's birthday party. My SIL just called me and asked me what I was doing and when I told her I was making and printing a card for for Joshua (nephew on my side not their's). She told that was extremely tacky and cheap.
Well this is news to me...I always like homemade cards and things best. I figure this way I can customize it and make it special. Am I way off here? Do you think its ok or should I dump the idea all together and go buy one?
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I like personal handmade cards best. And that includes the ones that are specially made for me on a computer. I think your SIL is way off base.
ETA it also shows that the person was thinking specifically of me or my family and not just reaching into a junk drawer and grabbing the first b-day card they come across. Go for it, Karah.
luvmykids replied: I say just have him write or draw something in it too, that way it's even more personal. I don't think it's cheap, it takes just as much thought to make one as to buy one, and I like the idea that someone enjoyed making something just for me!
MamaJAM replied: I never buy cards....I make them all on the computer. I don't usually make the little quater-fold type on regular typing paper though....I have colorful thicker card paper and thin, fancy paper for the insides (and I make 1/2 fold 99% of the time). I have 2 different card making programs I use to personalize templates and have a ton of pictures/photos I use to design my own from scrath (I also keep a file of poems and sayings for use in cards).
Personally - I would say anyone who thinks you are 'cheap' for making your own cards is a very shallow person. I think way more time and thought goes into a home-made card than just going to the store and shelling out $3 for a card some stranger made.
Momof3inMe replied: I love computer cards! My grandfather was well known for his computer cards. He would take pics of birds and flowers and his fat cats and would make a card from them or put them on the inside of your card. I have to say I miss those cards!
MM'sMama replied: Thanks ladies glad I am not the only one who loves them.
MAMAJAM, I do the same thing.
Jenn that is so sweet that he did that.
Here is how the card turned out I did a quick scan, not the best but will work.
(edit ok that turned out HUGE let me try again.) Front of the card and the envelope. Its a mini card so both are printed on one piece of card stalk.

I had to blow this up some so you could actaully read it lol. But this is the inside.
MyLuvBugs replied: I think there are tacky cards that you can make and nice cards that you can make. So long as you're making the cards look really nice and cute for that person, then it's fine. We do that all the time now b/c it saves SOOOO much money.
My3LilMonkeys replied: I personally like homemade cards - whether they be computer done or a piece of construction paper that your child drew (or scribbled) on.
Brias3 replied: I think store bought (although I do it much of the time) is MUCH less personal than a homemade. I think computer cards or handmade are really special- like you said, its something made specifically with the person in mind.
JP&KJMOM replied: I like to make cards and depending on who it is for I love to let the kids make their own. My parents and Jason parents LOVE to get one on construction paper that the kids have made. MIL usually cries cause they are so cute!
Go for it!
AlexsPajamaMama replied: I LOVE computer cards too!! Not cheap or tacky at all!
luvbug00 replied: I don't have a preferanc either way becuse it's the thought that counts no how much you did or didn't spend on a card.
Crystalina replied: I don't find it tacky at all. What I DO find tacky is when someone sends an E-card. I don't think there is any thought to it at all and it takes 2 seconds to make. You can't put them on the mantel for all to see. What are you going to say...Oh, come here to the computer and let me show you the card the so and so sent me. Those are tacky.
E-cards are nice for goofing off or "thinking about you" type things, not for birthdays and holidays.
ediep replied: I make card all the time, I hardly ever buy cards. I don't think they are tacky at all
ions_momma replied: I dont think its tacky at all either. Its more personal and shows that you put time into it and didnt just grab the first card you came across.
CantWait replied: Sounds like your SIL is a bit of a high priced snob. I like the idea of a home made or computer made card. It's the works within the card, not the price of it.
MM'sMama replied: Thanks glad its not just me.
And BTW he LOVED his card!!! Loved that the actual card said his name.
jacobsmama replied: Not tacky very loving and personal and the layout of the card looks great!
ilovemybaby replied: ITA with everyone else. I think you can make better cards on the computer sometimes than you can find in the store. Really. Some of the cards they make these days are just so stupid.

DVFlyer replied: Whether it's an e-card, handmade card, etc, I appreciate the gesture. Of course I'd rather have a million dollars from them, but the gesture- small or big- is cool with me.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Not tacky at all. I would rather have handpicked or handmade, over the premade boxed kind anyday.
