Do you have an accent?
Danalana wrote: Let me tell you who does have accents...Ally (MoonMama) and Jessica (Mommy2Isabella). They both have the cutest northern accents, though Jessica's is somewhat puzzling, given that she lives in South Carolina (and has for most of her life) Anyway, who else has a cute northern accent? Or any accent?
HuskerMom replied: Well I'm from Nebraska, and I don't think I have an accent. I love the way southern accents sound though. When you say northern accents how north do you mean?
Danalana replied: Hehe, I'm sure yours is northern. I guess i consider northern anything north of kentucky, maybe? I don't know. I have a southern accent...but not hillbilly, as far as i know.
Mommy2Isabella replied: DANA has an accent .. a very cute very southern accent .. I love it!
Danalana replied: Yeah, she told me she didn't have a country accent before we talked...and heck, she wasn't kidding! I sound like a hick next to her, but really, my accent isn't too bad. Not compared to some people around here.
Kentuckychick replied: I'm from Lexington, Kentucky and it's not really a big hillbilly or redneck city so while I do have a bit of a southern accent (I do say y'all) and occasionally I will speak in a country accent, if I start talking that way it's hard to stop and becomes a joke... but typically I'm pretty well spoken.
Calimama replied: DH says I sound like a California girl.. but I don't hear it.
Danalana replied: Well, I speak gramatically correct....just a little different.
Kentuckychick replied: Sorry Dana, that should have continued that typically I'm pretty well spoken so I don't really care if I sound a little bit country
HuskerMom replied: So what does a northern accent sound like?
Mommy2Isabella replied: Yes, I can vouche for Dana on the fact that she is gramatically correct and well spoken, just with a southern drawl to it. Which I find very cute.
amymom replied: That is what I was wondering. I now live in northern NY but grew up in southern NYS with an Irish immigrant mother and an Irish-American Father from the Bronx. And my mother had a thick Irish brogue and me dad had a good Bronx accent (and was a radio broadcaster at times). So I am told that I sound like a funny Irish New Yorker!!! But I do NOT hear it!!!!
But given Canada is just a stone's throw away, there are lots of"'eh's" in my kid's conversations.
lovemykiddies replied: I don't think I have an accent. I'm from Florida. My dad definitely does--he's from Alabama.
Danalana replied: a northern accent says "head", "bed', and "milk" with one syllable. Somehow, I can make 2
Kentuckychick replied: Lol, I know where you're coming from there I like to say that people are "tuckered" instead of tired... I said that in New York once and they looked at me like "huh?"
Then there's my mom who says "turist" = tourist, "leasure" (like leather with an s) = leisure, and of course "warsh" = wash
I can't get past people who say "Crane" instead of cray-on though... that always cracks me up
Danalana replied: Wow, I don't say any of that. I haven't heard most of that around here, either...except "warsh". That makes me wanna go into seizures.
HuskerMom replied: I heard someone pronounce crayon "crown" and it drove me crazy!
Danalana replied:
HuskerMom replied: So do y'all with southern accents pronounce creek "crik or creek"? My dad is from kansas and says "crik". It drives me up the wall!
Danalana replied: I definitely say "creek". I hate it when people say "crik".
Kentuckychick replied: Definitely creek... I can't stand the word "crik"
And "crown" is just about as bad as "crane"... it's two syllables CRAY-ON. I have a friend who says it and it drives me batty... I'm like "LOOK, right there it's spelled right out for you!!!"
Kentucky's a strange place though because there are so many different accents. In Lexington we say "y'all" and in another part of the state they say "you guys".
The one that cracks me up the most is my best friend works in a small county (actually the second poorest county in the nation, Owsley, so it shouldn't crack me up too much) and oh the stories she could tell. Apparently you don't have a fight there... and instead of saying that you "fought" someone... you "fit" em... Like "Those two guys right thur just 'fit' each other." She said it's taken her 2 full years to understand just what the heck some of the kids are saying. I think I'd lose my mind.
Danalana replied: I'd lose mine too...I'm already so close
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I've lived in Minnesota all my life... I don't have an accent, to me it's every one else that does.
Danalana replied: OH, Sarah....you definitely have one. When i lived in Minnesota, a few of my roommates were from Minnesota, and they had huge accents. How do you say "bag"? I swear, they said "bayg".
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Lol.... isn't that how you're supposed to say it? I knew a girl from NJ once - when she said bag it sounded like bad, except with a "g" on the end instead of a d.
Danalana replied: Yep, that's how I say it...
MoonMama replied: I have a cute northern accent? Thanks hun. I absolutely adore your southern accent.
Danalana replied: Yes you do...I love it
redplaydoh replied: I don't know about y'all, but *I* don't have an accent. Everyone else does but not me....
MyBabeMaddie replied: lol Thats what I have to put up with here, Pittsburghese is sooo awful! It's "warsh" "yella" (yellow) "winda" (window) "yins" AHH makes me want to pull my hair out! When I get out of school I'm moving south and will do everything in my power to start speaking with a southern accent they are so cute!
Maddy'sMommy replied: I am from Fl so I don't think I have an accent although one of my best friends says I sound like I am from California,
My mom's family lives in SC and they all have cute southern accents too.
luvbug00 replied: virgina here. if anything i talk with no accents. but i do slip in and out of words of differant origin. i say alot of british sayings and stuff like that. but i don't hink i have a spasific accent. although i can pick up any accent pretty quick.
coasterqueen replied: I'm from the Midwest, central Illinois, and I get asked all the time if I'm from the South. Not sure why. I don't think I have an accent.
Kaitlin'smom replied: not that I am aware of, I have talked to Mel and she has a cute southern one.
mom21kid2dogs replied: My friends up North (and by that I mean Columbus Ohio) say I have an accent. I live in SE Ohio.
PrairieMom replied: norther accents? We don't have accents up here. Its all your southerners that talk all funny. I always wanted an accent. I guess I have one. actually I get accents really easily. We go to NC once a year for a family vacation, and I am talking with a southern drawl before even leaving the airport. Its embarrassing. It makes me feel like I'm making fun of the people there, but really I am just that easily swayed. once we were in NC and went to the movie theater. when we were leaving the guy there said "y-all come back now" with that accent and I about choked on my popcorn. it cracked me up.
BAC'sMom replied: Nope I sound just like a Texan!
moped replied: I guess i sound like a Canadian - a few people like Mel can say I have an accent, but I don't think so
Danalana replied: Ooooooh, you should move here!
Danalana replied: Tara, you should talk to me once a week....I would keep you in a southern "yall come back now" accent
PrairieMom replied:
Danalana replied:
jcc64 replied: I'm a New Yawwwker, and sound like it. Gotta problem wit dat?!
Danalana replied: I love New York...I've been to NYC a few times, and it was great. Nope, no problem here
A&A'smommy replied: yeah I'm sure I do really bad my friends laugh at me sometimes and thats bad... I know I catch myself and I let my southern accent show through on the internet because I say ya'll alot and I LIKE it!!! I'm not hillbillish or anything but I do know that I have some cousins that live and hour away and whenever I would go visited them (me and a friend of mine) we would come back talking like rednecks
my2monkeyboys replied: I naturally have what y'all seem to think of as a hillybilly accent/use of words. I was unaware of it growing up, but over the past 5-6 years I have really become aware of it, and have since come to embrace it. While I can/do use more "educated" language when need be, I am very casual in my speak 90% of the time. At the job I had before I had Will we had employees from all over the country, so I got to hear some great accents! That was when I realized how I sounded, too! One of my favorites was a guy from Virginia... he would say certain words so neat. Like home and phone... he would say them as "hoom" and "phoon"... very cool. I just love accents!
TANNER'S MOM replied: Well I figure I do have a southern accent. I know I speak improperly. I don't do it on purpose it's just how us southern girls talk. I do say yellar at times, or winder, and youns.. youns all get in here it's time for supper. Laundry soap is washing powders, wash rag instead of cloth. Taters and maters. Now while it may sound like I am uneducated and don't know how speak properly I don't feel that way at all. I feel like it's just a region thing. A southern heritage thing. When I need to speak well, and professional I can hold my own with the best of them. But I am quite proud of my Ya'll and Yee Haws.
Jenn, you do have an accent EH..lol And Di, you do too. I alot more enanicated with your words and not ran together like I do mine. Thanks for saying my accent was cute Di..lol
I like to say, us Southerns might talk a little slower doesn't mean we think slower. lol
I have to get off here now, I am fixin to go get my youngus from school.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I love all accents, I'm quite good at imitating a lot of them.
I don't think I have an accent when I speak... except when I READ. OMG. When I read english, in my head it's fine... but when I say it I swear I trip all over my own tongue, it doesn't sound anything like me. I almost sound like a ditsy french maid, even right down to the giggles when I KNOW I screwed up a word, but a french maid who says her R's properly.
But as far as me having an accent... no. I was into Languages in school... and I tend to speak very "phonetically". Course there are some words that I just "like" to say certain ways... likie Bag... I say Bay-g... lol but when I have to be professional, I say Bah-g.
amymom replied: I imagine you snapped your gum and put your hands on your hips OR your fists in the air.
................."from another New Yawker" using my Dad's best Bronx accent.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I didn't know us northerners could have an accent?! Everyone else just has an accent to me and we sound normal.
How can you make two syllables out of milk?
Hillbilly Housewife replied: A slow-motion version would be May-Elk
my2monkeyboys replied: I recently ate at a Japanese restaurant and when the cook asked me how I wanted my steak, I said "medium well." He said, "way-el? Way-el? You sound like you from Alabama!" (in his heavy Japanese accent!) We all just rolled laughing! I'm with Tanner's Mom... I can stop it to a certain degree, but why would I? It's part of who I am.
ZandersMama replied: I have a major cape breton accent. I dont notice unitl I am off the island, but then llook out! And I say eh alot, how come instead of why, lol.
Danalana replied: I'm not sure, actually
redchief replied: I speak south Jersey, which is kind of a mix of redneck and Philly.
Jackie012007 replied: I'm in Central New York - we don't have that NYC sound, but we say weird things like Clinton would be "Clittin" and Babbot would be "baaaaaabbot" - that nasally sound!
I know I sound annoying LOL
Miranda1127 replied: well if i'm reading correctly i have a northern accent. but of course i don't hear it. I do pronounce water- wooder and follow a few other Philly cliché
My3LilMonkeys replied: I have no accent as far as I can tell - I'm in a section of northeast PA just far enough from NY, Philly, and Pittsburgh to avoid all of those accents. When I read aloud or I'm at work on the phone I'm told I have near perfect diction (I was always the one chosen to read aloud in school) but I always think I sound stupid.
Crystalina replied: I've been told I have an Ohio (uh-hi-a) accent but I don't notice.
Kentuckychick replied: Lol, I was just thinking about how many people (to us Kentuckians at least) mispronounce the names of our cities and counties. Of course this happens not just from people outside of the state, but from different areas of the state as well... it's pretty funny to hear.
For example; - Louisville = 'Lou-i-vull', or 'Lou-uh-vull' (definitely no "Louis"... and definitely never "ville") - Versailles = Vurr-sells - Pikeville = "pahk(like hawk)-vull" and sometimes, but rarely "pike-vull" - Danville = "Dan-vull" - Richmond = "Rich-mend" - Owensboro = "Owns-burra"
And so on and so forth... No one in kentucky can say "Ville" though... it's pretty much official
Nina J replied: Everybody has some sort of accent. I have an Australian accent.
Danalana replied: I adore Australian accents I have a friend who lives there, and we are planning on talking on the phone soon
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I've been told I don't have a strong southern accent. Of course I realize I don't sound like someone from Boston or Minnesota, either.
How funny that you people up north (ahem, Sara) don't realize you have a strong norther accent. I've talked to Jen (4littleladies) and I know she does.
Mel definitely has a strong southern accent. My husband....total redneck. They call him Dr Phil at work.
Naomi has just a little bit of a cajun accent.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I am one of those unusual people who seem to pick them up very easily. When we were in New Jersey, I seemed to get the Northern Jersey sound very easily. In North Carolina, I picked up the southern drawl. Now whenever I speak to my sister in Texas, it seems like that comes back into my voice. I love accents. British is a particular favorite, however, I love Boston accents. The absence of "R" sounds cracks me up. I'll never forget when my friend's mom (born and raised in Boston) hollered at us to "Get ya pawkas and get in the caw." I had no idea what a Pawka was. Turns out it was a parka. My friend laughed all the way home over that one.
