Drooling
dolfinrse wrote: Zack is going to be 5 months old in a few days and we want to try to put him in his crib. (Right now he sleeps in his pack and play at the foot of our bed.) But we have one problem, he drools so much in his crib that within 1/2 hour of going to sleep in there he is awake and screaming because his face is soaked. He drools in his pack and play too, but I don't think it bothers him because the mattress on the pack and play isn't as firm as his crib mattress. We have tried adjusting him to his crib for his naps and slowly working our way into it, but he won't stay too long because he gets so wet.
I would appreciate any suggestions to help keep his face from becoming so wet and him waking up. We have the Fisher Price Aquarium on his crib for him to play with and he likes that, so that keeps him occupied if we just lay him in there to play.
TIA
mckayleesmom replied: Awwww Zach and Mckaylee need to get married someday....lol...she is the drooling queen...I usually put a recieving blanket under her head in her crib....it helps a little, but its unfixable I think,,,I usually just keep something under her so I only have to wash her blankets once a week....Mckaylee sleeps through it though.
dolfinrse replied: We have these absorbent pads that my mil bought for Zack when he was first born because he leaked through his diaper constantly. Anyway, these pads are super absorbent and don't let the sheets get wet. I tried putting one under his head the other day, but he rolls all over, so it didn't work like I had wanted. Plus, it made me nervous that he could move it and bunch it all up.
CantWait replied: why not try putting it under the crib sheet. Walmart has full size crib soaker upper thingys for $10, and it slips on the mattress so it doesn't bunch.
mckayleesmom replied: well no matter what mckaylee has in her crib she ends up moving it...I just make sure I put powder under her little chin,,,cause she really doesn't have a chin,,,just giant cheeks...Lately she has been rolling over onto her tummy to sleep and she always sleeps on the same cheek so its a little chapped cause she drools on it....its a no win situation if you ask me.
see she is just cheeks
amynicole21 replied: Be careful with powders!! You don't want her to inhale any of it because it can cause real health problems for her!! Don't use it on her diaper area either - it's linked to reproductive cancer. Just put vaseline or aquaphor on either area when it's dry and it will act as a moisture barrier so that drool or other wetness can't irritate the skin. There may be some powders that are safer than others, but my doc said just to avoid them alltogether.
We have an absorbant pad that ties down to the slats in the crib. It is as wide as the crib so that if he rolls it should cover most of the area. Now if he spins around, that's a different story
ediep replied: we have this too, but because Jason is a huge sweat-er...he wakes up with sweaty hair and a wet spot under his head
gramps replied: Put a diaper, opened up under the crib sheet. It will draw the moisture in and not allow it to acumulate on the outer layer.
Schnoogly replied: Or get some of those cheap microfiber towels at walmart--in the auto supply section. People use these as inserts in cloth diapers--they absorb like crazy! Put a few under the crib sheet and that will draw the moisture away. Also in the winter you can get some microfleece and lay that under his face--a big strip wrapped under the crib mattress to keep it secure. That wicks moisture away (we also use it in cloth diapers as a liner to keep wetness away).
I wouldn't let Iain sleep on a disposable diaper--too smelly perfume and all kinds of chemicals, but that's just me.
MommyToAshley replied: I put aquaphor on Ashley's cheeks and chin when she was teething to help keep her from getting chapped from the drooling.
Are you sure the drooling is what is waking him up in the crib? It took Ashley a little while to get used to her crib too, maybe he just needs to get used to it?
Guest replied: Are aquaphor and vaseline safe to use on their face while drooling? What if the baby licks it up? Will it poison them or something? My baby has a little rash from all the drool, and the ped's office said to use normal chapstick. That's not really working, so I want to know if the other suggestions are safe....

MommyToAshley replied: Actually, vaseline or aquaphor is safe to use on the face, it won't hurt if they get it in their mouth. It is what her Ped recommended for Ashley... she gets chapped cheeks all year round. However, you have to be careful and rub it in some so that they don't get it in their eyes. So, be careful when putting it on their cheeks. Just be sure to rub it in some.
ediep replied: my sister told me that the guy who invented vaseline used to eat a spoonful of it everday! I guess its safe...not that I reccommend eating it!
I use aquaphor on Jasons face everyday
