momtobe wrote: The AFP test...alpha-feta protein test... I was snoozing away trying to catch up on some sleep before my OB appointment and the phone rings mad.gif It the OB office...My afp test i had done about 9 days ago came back positive. Positive for Spina Bifada. I know it doesnt mean my baby has it, it just shows it may be at risk of having it. Luickily I have an appoinment today...He probably will schedule me for a ultrasound and amnio. I know that this test shows up as false positives alot. But please all say a prayer for me. My appoinment is in 3 hours so when i get back ill update you all...

amynicole21 replied: I did take the test, but mine came back negative. 2 of my friends had pos. AFPs and had perfectly healthy and normal babies, though. You are right that there are a lot of false positives, but it's still not really much consolation when we're talking about YOUR baby! I'm so sorry you are going through the stress right now. I am keeping you in my thoughts and hoping that everything comes out ok! Keep us posted. grouphug.gif

MomToMany replied: I took the test, too, for each of my pregnancies. But it has always been negative for me. I'm really hoping that it's just a false-positive for you. grouphug.gif I'll say some prayers for you grouphug.gif !! Update us when you can!!

Schnoogly replied: All I know is there are lots and lots of false positives. A good u/s should be able to detect spina bifida if your baby has it. The test also doesn't come back "positive" for anything, it depends on the numbers. High numbers indicate possible spina bifida, low numbers indicate possible downs syndrome. It's not a diagnostic test.

I'm sure your baby is OK!! But if your doc really thinks you're at risk he/she might recommend amnio. Still, that's the reason lots of moms don't take the test--it has a very high rate of false positives and turns up false negatives too.

mummy2girls replied: Ive had them dopne with both my kids..they came back pos for spina bifada each time and each time the risk got higher and both my babies were born without the defect...Ill be thinking of you all day. Update us when u can(((HUGS)))

kimberley replied: i know the test often comes back positive and the baby is fine. try not to worry too much. my prayers are with you grouphug.gif

jem0622 replied: I have taken it. Never got a false positive. But I have heard so many people who had false positives. I wouldn't worry too much until you have some solid proof. I know mother's who refused to test.

jcc64 replied: Telling you not to worry is probably pointless- you will. But take comfort in the fact that many, many people have false positives, as you've already seen. I'll be thinking of you, and keep us posted.

aspenblue1 replied: I didn't take it but I know there are a lot of false positives.

jen replied: I had the test done and it was negative and I have never heard of anything about it until now! but I am sure your baby is fine, my prayers are with you today. Try to stay calm. I do have a friend that was told that she was in the high percentile risk of having a down syndrome baby and her baby was fine. I think the numbers indicated she was at risk but it depends on the individual. She had an amino done but it wouldn't have swayed her decision to keep the baby just for her peace at mind. It sounds like this test puts you at risk depending on numbers not your actual medical workup, your baby will be fine, I have faith in that. smile.gif

I had the AFP test taken with both pregnancies. I know it is scary when you hear that there MIGHT be something wrong. I had the level II U/S, and then made the decision about the amnio because there were no risks involved with the level II U/S. But, I agree that you should take some comfort in knowing that there are a lot of false positives, especially for spina bifida. The waiting is the hardest part, but try to relax for your baby's sake. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers! Please keep us updated on how you are doing! grouphug.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I chose not to do the AFP. I wanted the level II u/s instead b/c it detects spina bifida (the rest I didn't care about, but spina bifida can only be corrected while the baby is still in the womb). Anyway, I didn't have the level II or AFP with either pregnancies. I guess I am living by faith! wink.gif

I will say a little prayer for you. But, I bet everything is fine! (((HUGS)))

coasterqueen replied: I had the test done, but my OB/GYN asked me to not have it done. She knows all I would do is worry and that there are sooooo many false positives on that test. I had it done anyways, against her wishes. Luckly it came back false positive.

I will say a prayer for you and ((BIG HUGS)). I'm sure everything will be fine. Keep us posted.
