Employees- Ughh, I must be getting old
DVFlyer wrote: What is wrong with employees these days? We had a girl start working for us after we checked references etc. Everything seemed to be going along fine and then she called to say she couldn't make it that day because her mom was sick and she needed to take her to the doctor. No big deal.
She never came back. No call, no letter, no e-mail.... nothing. The worst thing is that her husband/ boyfriend (don't know which) works at a vendor of ours. When one of my customer service people spoke to him, they asked how this person's mom was doing and he said, "what? her mom is fine".
I called to see what happened and sent a letter. Nothing. This type of behavior seems to be the norm. Either they don't want to work, but think they deserve a job or just decide they can up and leave without saying anything.
Anyone else notice this?
Next thing you know, I'll be in my front yard yelling, "stay off my lawn you little whipper snappers!"
I'm so old.
kit_kats_mom replied: ROFLMBO I work at home and so I get the privlege of not having to deal with that thank goodness. But my aunt, who works for my company in the main office, is always complaining about that exact same thing. New hires leaving for lunch and never coming back etc. Crazy! What is with kids these days? Didn't their parents teach them right? LOL
luvbug00 replied: Oh sooo sorry. Someone I know...( who lives in my house and is hogging my tv) has done that before and I Yelled at him. It's so rude and disrespectful but the most common reson he did it was because he thought the job was not somthing he was equipt to handle or he just wan't suited for it. He has done it alot and now if he needed a job they would be scarce because he blew off all his options.
MommyToAshley replied: I was in a management position for a number of years and I got so tired of this very thing. This is one reason I love being self-employed. This may sound weird, but I told DH that I don't want to grow to the size that we need to hire other people. I just don't want to deal with that. We've outsourced stuff before, but it is always a hassle to get the projects on time. I don't know what it is with people and their work ethics, maybe I am just old too????
tammyhopkins replied: I am working as a manager at an internet pharmacy and i think that employees beleive that the world owes them something. Like we should thank them for applying for a position with the company. I feel your frustration.
3_call_me_mama replied: Nope! I'm right there with ya. When I owned my daycare center, I HATED havignto hire people because they rarely showed up. I think the girl you hired actually was hired by us too!! Or her twin, we got the same story from a girl we hired, she just never showed up or sent any reasoning as to why?! Actually a HUGH part of closing the daycare was the employees. I was so SICK AND TIRED of babysiting adults that were being paid to do a job. And they do act like you owe them some sort of favor for accepting a position in your company. UGGH! But that said, there are some really good employee out there... they are just all taken !
Josie83 replied: That is so rude! I know she may have left you in the lurch but it sounds like you don't need someone like that working for you. Why bother going through al the rigmarole of applying for a job and starting work then just quit? Weird.
Unless maybe you're the demon boss from he** . . . lol xx
mckayleesmom replied: I had a friend that told me there was an opening for a job where she worked.....I got the job....I started my first day...break time came.so we all went to the break room..all except my friend. Everyone kept asking where she was,,but didn't think anything of it really. When we got back in the kitchen...there was a note on the counter....she quit....SHE LEFT A NOTE.... . I almost killed her when I met up with her at school the next day, because being her friend..they all assumed I was going to do it to.
TANNER'S MOM replied: I have that problem too.
I have been hiring an assistand for months now. I finally have one. I was beginning to think people just didnt want to work w/ me.
But in reality...it makes higher cost on the company and I really hate that. The drug test...200.00 the time involved by alot of people to do paperwork, payroll, references. I try to say come and work for a week cash.. On Friday we can discuss what you think? Is this a go or not.
My new person has started today and made it threw one break... cross your fingers!

A&A'smommy replied: Thats awful!!! I'm sorry but I don't understand the point in that!!!
DVFlyer replied: What a coincidence........ Last night, my cust svc mgr talked to her old coworker (one of our vendors) who she is also friends with. Josie was right, she said it was because I'm the boss from HE!!........
Actually, she told this person that it was because she was bored here. It's funny, the reason she left her other job (at that same vendor) was because she was too busy and they made her do jobs of other people rather than hire more help.
I guess, when the phone rings and you don't answer it because you're too busy text messaging your boyfriend or you don't file what you're expected to file because you're too busy daydreaming out the window, it's our fault your bored. Don't try to make an impression your first month or so, just slot right into some bad habits.
And get off my lawn!!! You little whipper snappers!
kit_kats_mom replied: One thing that I've found that may help with this problem is... Hire temp workers through Kelly Services or Adecco. Use them for a couple of weeks and then interview the employee to see if they are comfortable working for you and evaluate if you are pleased with them. If so, offer them a job! I will tell you that many large companies use Adecco for "in depth interviewing". I've gotten job offers from every single company that I went to work for through Adecco...I passed on all of them because I didn't like the environment at the office or the work itself but I thought it was a pretty good idea to test the employees with little to no commitment.
TANNER'S MOM replied: I had a job one time and we worked in teams..we had to take a large personialty test..and that was how they made our teams..
But they gave each employee a copy.. it was a very expensive test..
But a few times in my life I have referred to the test.
When I interview for this job..they asked for an outgoing person..it takes a special breed to take a cussing from a trucking all day...so I attached it to my resume and it worked wonders..

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Gosh I know exactly what you mean...but I don't necessarily think it's because we're old. We just have good work ethics I suppose. Maybe that is a generation thing...would be a good study! DH and I both have great work ethics...have always been "super" employees, but we (I'm boasting) are hard to find. DH's father owns a grocery store and the turn over is herendous (sp?). Grocery stores of course attract young people who are only there to make a little beer money or have a summer job. It's tough.
You know the saying "common sense is not that common"!! I'm someone who still writes thank you notes for interviews, resignation letters too. With emails these days, I think people are so dang lazy.
I agree with kitkatsmom, use a temp agency and keep us posted with how it goes.
DVFlyer replied: Anyone else realize the irony of this post???............. that I posted about work ethic........ while sitting at my desk.......... at work.......... on the clock..............not doing work...........
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: LOL! That's funny...I think about this ALL the time. How do you all get on here while you're working? I'm not judging. But I'm a SAHM, and not to say I don't work, but I get on when Wil is sleeping. I don't have a boss on my tush watching me diddle daddle online...just thinking.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I noticed! LOL!
It is true...DH is a Sales Manager and he has a tough time finding and keeping people. I suppose when we own our own business, we will be in your shoes and I will understand more of what you are talking about. Where I come from people just didn't do that. There weren't many jobs out there...you definetly didn't burn your bridges.
We do this, too.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Right. The jobs I've had in the past would never have allowed this. There wouldn't be any way to get by with it, either.
TANNER'S MOM replied: I get on her all the time from work.
I just take breaks and look. And I am on an endless amount of hold..so I looke then too.
I have a semi stressful job..and it's my lets look at something before I kill someone place!
DVFlyer replied:
Three words: Man-age-ment.
A&A'smommy replied: Well for me its because my job is putting together photoshows and brochures so I spend a lot of time loading pictures, putting together music and burning dvds... so therefore I have a lot of free time inbetween things and boss is hardly EVER there I have called in THREE times this week and had to leave a message I'm worried!!
