Exciting news for me - not so good for the patient
MyBrownEyedBoy wrote: Yesterday I was looking at a blood smear under the microscope. I was only looking because my machine was giving my funny error codes for abnormal red blood cells. But as I was looking at the red cells, I also saw some funny looking white cells. I looked further and ended up calling the doctor and telling him it looked like his patient may have Hairy Cell Leukemia. He called the pathologist and then ordered a confirmation test. It came back today as positive, the patient has Hairy Cell Leukemia. Not good news for the patient, but I haven't seen a hairy cell since I was in school. It was a major find for me and to have it positively confirmed means that I just did my job and did it well. My bosses have no idea that it has been confirmed and won't be in the office until Monday, but I had to share my excitement. Please no one think for a minute that I am excited that a gentleman has cancer, I am not at all. But I am excited that I recognized it for what it was and he can now begin treatment. Hopefully, before he gets really sick.
PrairieMom replied: Good Job! Isn't it nice to know that you made a difference?
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Yeah, my job puts me pretty far behind the scenes so this guy will never know about me. But I know and my supervisor knows because I told him I had contacted the doctor. So, that is the important part.
mom21kid2dogs replied: WTG. I wouldn't discount the news for the patient. The earlier the detection, the better!
kayla's mama replied: WTG How rewarding to have a job where you make a difference. Well, I hope the patients gets treatment soon. Good job
My3LilMonkeys replied: Great job Kelly!!!
And I totally agree that the patient will probably be happy to have it detected early.
mckayleesmom replied: Good Job Kelly.
JAYMESMOM replied: Congratulations that you were able to identify something hopefully very early enough for the patient to receive treatment. Having lost a grandmother recently to cancer and another one only 5 months ago. The sooner you find out the better. I am sure the patient will be grateful someone found out.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Thanks everyone. I got a bit more information from the nursing staff. They are very glad it was caught and were more than happy to give me a head's up. The guy originally came in for a heart attack. Never had a clue about leukemia. Wow, the importance of yearly checkups. And maybe more often than yearly once you reach a certain age. I hope everything turns out okay.
mummy2girls replied: Thats awesome! Not for the patient butf or you! Your job sounds like a cool one:)
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Thanks, Shelly. I really love what I do. Not necessarily which hospital I do it at, but I love it nonetheless. Thanks.
ashtonsmama replied: That's great that you recognized it! Sorry for the man though-but you could end up saving his life Kelly! So congrats on that find!
luvmykids replied: WTG! Its a great feeling to know that by being good at your job you may have saved someones life!!!
CantWait replied: I think for you it is very exciting....good find. I hope it was found in time. Good job
