FIL's visit went downhill this morning - ER visit
luvmykids wrote: FIL came down yesterday to bring two of his horses here since they're getting ready to move (no, I do not want or need two more horses after my last few months but thats another story )Anyway, he one upped DH and rode a horse all the way to school to pick them up, Colt rode halfway home with him, Kylie rode the other half, and Macie rode up our dirt road. He decided to stay the night because he wanted to help me rearrange some horses, pens, etc....we had a great visit, took the kids to McDonalds,
So this morning he and the kids went out to feed and next thing I know Colt is coming in telling me grandpa is bleeding. I run out to see him coming in with a gash over his eye, not too bad but definitely needs stitches. He was in a pen walking out and she just ran by him jumping and kicking and happened to get in front of him and nailed him. We load up, I drop him off at the ER, drop the kids off at my moms, and go back to the ER.......for six fun hours. It swelled up so bad his eyebrow split in half, the part that was at the inside corner of his eye was over his nose, it was the worst thing I've ever seen. It looked like a baseball under his skin. The really great part was when the guy stitching him up said "Oh see, thats his skull right there" I'm waiting for BIL to email me the pics he took with is camera phone.
We're sooooo grateful that it wasn't worse, a millimeter in any direction could have been incredibly bad, but it took 21 stitches to close him up. She's our tallest horse, any other horse would have caught him in the chest where he is still recovering from breaking all his ribs and puncturing his lungs so in a terrible way it's better that it was her than one of the other horses. Needless to say he is spending the night again since his eye is swollen shut and he's on percoset.
This poor guy just cannot catch a break, it was totally a freak thing....but it's the third freak thing in a very short amount of time. I'm so over the horses, I just want to get rid of them all
TrulyBlessed replied: Oh my gosh!!! What a terrible accident. I'm happy to hear he is o.k. I mean he still sounds like he is in bad condition, but thankfully not threatening. Poor guy.
luvmykids replied: Definitely not as bad as his last horse accident, and when we first got to the ER they were sure he was going to have a detached retina or broken the orbital bone or something. But thankfully, not even a concussion, its really amazing that there was no other damage, she laid him flat on his back
MoonMama replied: Oh gosh Monica how scary! I'm so glad it was not worse and that he is ok.
:.Mrs_Mommy.: replied: Thats scary, animals can be so unpredictable. Glad its not any worse than it is.
amynicole21 replied: Holy moly!! That is terrible. I hope he recovers quickly.
kit_kats_mom replied: Yikes. Glad he's ok.
lovemy2 replied: Never a dull moment on that ranch huh! You poor thing and poor FIL - thank goodness it wasn't any worse and he will be ok - must have scared Colt too - huh? Good thing it wasn't one of the kids either
stella6979 replied: Wow, that is scary. I'm glad it wasn't more serious and I hope he's feeling better soon.
Teesa®© replied: Oh my gosh! I'm sorry to hear that he was hurt, but glad he's OK!
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Oh my goodness!! I'm glad he's ok!
grandma replied: Wow -that is scary! Glad he is ok and recovering. BTW, how many years have you had horses, all your life?
mckayleesmom replied: Youch....I hope he feels better soon.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: O holy crap Mon! I am so glad he is OK! That could have been a horrible!
HuskerMom replied: How scary, glad he's ok!
Brias3 replied: Hope he is feeling better soon!!
sparkys2boys replied: Oh gosh Monice how scary for you all. I am glad he will be ok.. you have had rough time of it all, I feel so bad for you guys.
luvmykids replied: We had one when I was a kid, and my grandparents had them, but I was never a horse person until DH...we've had horses ever since. He grew up with them, and so did FIL.
He was much better than I expected today, he was actually able to open his eye a little. After church we went and got him some new glasses and he went home. He should be there in about an hour, I'm nervous that he's driving and pulling a trailer with only one eye but he seemed ok.
sparkys2boys replied: OH wow, glad he is on his way home. Hopefully he has a safe trip KUP on how he is. Are you ok? I can only bet that it shook you up pretty good?
luvmykids replied: It shook me up a little, just a reminder that no matter how careful you are or how much experience you have, accidents like this can happen....he wasn't doing anything stupid and she's a good horse, it was just one of those things. But overall I'm usually the calm headed one in the family when stuff like this happens so I spent most of my time calming down BIL and his wife and MIL
BIL still hasn't sent me the pics, you have to see it to realize what a miracle it is that nothing else was damaged or that his injury wasn't worse.
CantWait replied: I'm glad it wasn't any worse.
Our Lil' Family replied: Wow, that was very close! Glad he's okay but what a typical man to get on the road probably before he should have! I hope he makes it home alright.
luvmykids replied: Yeah MIL and I both tried to talk him out of it but he didn't use anymore of his percoset, and he has a good friend who is blind in one eye and pulls a trailer all the time so that was his reasoning
They just called, he made it home but I guess I didn't do a good enough job preparing MIL b/c she is grossed out
grandma replied: Sounds like your husband is a real cowboy. I bet the kids love growing up with horses.... Hope your FIL makes the trip ok, he must be a tough man!
luvmykids replied: Oh yes, his whole side of the family are...this is the first year the kids haven't rodeod since they were born. They all did the PRCA thing, DH broke his elbow shortly before I met him, then I had the twins, and he just never could really get back to it.
My FIL is a tough guy, one of those real life Marlboro men
grandma replied: I use to love the Marlboro man....lol
luvmykids replied: FIL isn't handsome like the Marlboro man was but he's probably tougher
gr33n3y3z replied: Ouch!!!!! I hope he is doing better now
3xsthefun replied: Yikes! That sounds scary!
Hope he gets better soon!
coasterqueen replied: I hope he gets better soon.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Oh gosh, that gave me chills. I hate to hear anyone get hurt. And you know me, I'm afraid of horses. So scary. I'm glad it wasn't worse, but still sounds pretty bad. Here's to a fast recovery!
luvmykids replied: I'm getting that way, I have to worm them today and am totally dreading it. Every time I start to go outside and do it I find an excuse to come back in I know I have to just suck it up but I really, really don't want to I'm considering calling one of my neighbors and playing dumb
