Family member murdered this weekend

Apparently, an ex-girlfriend was out drinking and she called him for a ride home because she didn't want to drive drunk.
So, he went and picked her up and drove her home. I am not sure of all the details, but she stabbed him once in the chest.
He was brought to the hospital and brought into surgery. He passed away approx 15 minutes into surgery.
The doctor came out and told his parents (my DH aunt and uncle) that he didn't make it.
His dad barged into the OR and picked his son up and held him begging to come back so he could bring him home.
Apparently, the girl that did this tried telling the police that he cut himself making a sandwich.
The knife was driven right through his breastplate.
He leaves behind a young son.
He was killed after being the nice person he was (being a designated driver).
We went and visited his aunt and uncle yesterday evening and they are, obviously not doing too well.
Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
ETA: The girls' (she is in her 30's) father is a police officer. It will be interested if she will be charged.... and if so, charged with what?
