Finally found raw milk again

mommy~to~a~bunch wrote: After our other source up & closed for no reason last fall, a friend of ours finally got their own cow, and are letting us get milk once a week from them! Woohoo!!

Hannah especially has missed the "good" milk, and the cream. I missed making our own butter as well. We were using an organic brand in the meantime, and it was quite expensive. This is better, and MUCH cheaper thumb.gif .

HuskerMom replied: That's nice of your friend. thumb.gif

AlexsPajamaMama replied: good deal!
I want my own cow..milk at the store is so much money
Ive never had raw milk, but my step mom grew up on a farm and thats what they always had.

A&A'smommy replied: wow how nice!!!! thumb.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
It's so $$$ at the store, and it's not even that great of a product. My friend's cow is like their child, they baby their animals so much. And they don't give her shots or hormones either, another big thumb.gif ! You don't know what's in the store milk unsure.gif .

We'd get our own, but there's no way we could keep up on the milking.

ETA: We're paying my friend $2.50/gallon, and we get 6 gallons a week.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: A friend of mine's nephew works at a dairy farm... and this story sent shivers down my back.

Sometimes cows get.. uh.. raw and cracked on their udders.. and well... they have to skim the milk sometimes because scabs fall in.

sparkys2boys replied:
ohmy.gif Oh my.. ewwwwwwww, that is super nasty. I think I will just continue to buy it at the store no matter how much it is. That is if I ever buy it again..lol

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
Well, if the cows were like that, there's no way I'd buy milk from them rolleyes.gif . I've seen their cow & where she's kept, and everything is clean and fine. If there was a problem, she'd let me know wink.gif .

My2Beauties replied:
How much is milk in your area, ours is only like $3.19, which isn't much higher than what youa re paying? I am just curious, because to me $2.50 a gallon isn't much of a bargain but I'm only paying about 65 cents more than that.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Organic milk around here is about 7$ for 4 litres. (that's just over a gallon)

Teesa®© replied:
My Uncle has a dairy farm and he used to put something on the udders before milking - it was all machine. Now, I haven't been there since I was a very little grrl, but I *think* he Vaselined them. It may not have specifically been Vaseline - how many of us ask for cream and sugar when we want milk in our coffee or tea?

Yanno, I never actually thought of it till now, but all cows are to us are wet nurses!! rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
Milk here I think is anywhere from $4.29 to $4.99 a gallon, depending on what kind.

I also use the cream for butter, and whipped cream as well, and the buttermilk for biscuits and pancakes, so I get more out of it than just milk.

My2Beauties replied:
blink.gif Jeepers! Wow, yeah then you are getting a bargain. Plus it's awesome that you get more than just milk out of it. I would do the same thing then, I had no clue it was that much in your area.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
I know, it's crazy expensive rolleyes.gif .

Kaitlin'smom replied: okay I have never had raw milk, do you skim the top for the cream or milk?

I would love to try it someday.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
Yep, let the cream rise to the top, then skim it off. I use a soup ladle & pour it into a smaller jar. It's sooo good!

moped replied: So fat wise it is higher in fat? Better for kids than adults? I mean if I drank it it sound slike I would gain a pound a day.............

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
If you skim the cream off, it's more like skim or 1% milk. Sometimes I leave the cream in there, and it's good that way too.

As for being better, yes it is. Pasteurization & homogenization destroy all the good things present, and the milk companies add fillers to make it look richer than it really is.

Jackie012007 replied: our milk is so ridiculous here, it's like almost $4 a gallon. I buy organic whole milk for Carly (at $3.99 a half gallon, ugh mad.gif ) and Carl and I drink 8th Continent soy milk. I sometimes have issues with dairy, anyways so its better for me, and the chocolate soy milk is TO DIE FOR - tastes like malted milk balls!

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
Ya the price for a gallon of milk here is right up there close to $5

Calimama replied: Milk is SO expensive everywhere. wacko.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied: More Dairies Go Raw as Consumers Learn the Benefits of Unpasteurized Milk

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Scary stuff.... wacko.gif

It's too expensive around here to get it a lot. I wish I knew someone with a nice healthy clean cow. Hurray for suburbs. sad.gif

msoulz replied: So why are we the only mammal that drinks milk beyond weaning? Why do we drink it at all, be it raw or pasturized? Who's a scientist out there that can explain it to me? Is it our exceedingly large brains that need milk or have developed because we continue to drink the milk from other mammals?

Inquiring minds want to know! happy.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:

msoulz replied: Cool, so it was (or is still in some places I am sure) a good food supply, and for the rest of us it's just good with chocolate.

Thanks, I have wondered about that for a long time but was too lazy to actually research! smile.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: If you leave milk out to "sour" in high enough heat temperatures... you get yogurt. wink.gif

A&A'smommy replied:
WHAT???? were paying almost 6.00 for some brands here.. the cheapest ones per gallon are over 5bucks ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

A&A'smommy replied:
no doubt I LOVE soy milk but I"m the ONLY one who drinks it so I hate to buy it sad.gif I love soy anything though.. soy bugers to me are sometimes better than hambuger!!!

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
thumb.gif You're welcome!

Rocky - I have yet to try making yougurt, but I plan to thumb.gif .

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
ohmy.gif Wow, that is just insane! What an outrage mad.gif .

Nina J replied: I am glad you are getting raw milk again.

I think I have told you before, but I am lucky because I have relatives and quite a few friends who own dairy farms and milk over 200 cows twice a day. I buy milk most of the time nowadays though.

coasterqueen replied: I've not tried raw cows milk. I've tried raw goats milk. My MIL drinks the goats milk and uses the cream for butter, etc like you Mollie. I couldn't get used to the afterbite with goats milk. Dh and Kylie couldn't either, but Megan LOVED the stuff. We were buying it for quite some time there, but ended up going just with organic cows milk in the store. We pay upwards of $6 a gallon for organic cows milk and regular cows milk is around $4 or so a gallon.

My2Beauties replied:
Ok I bought milk yesterday for $2.77 a gallon!!! It's still fairly cheap here.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
I haven't tried goat's milk yet, but a neighbor will be getting some goats soon & I told her I'd like to try it.

LeaAnn - wow, that's cheap for milk. I guess if you're not concerned with the hormones and additives in it, that's a great deal.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
That's about what regular milk is around here in the stores. The local store usually has a sale for 2 for $5. Organic milk though is twice as much, about $6 a gallon, or more. I'd love to buy organic, just to not worry about the hormones and antibiotics, but I can't bring myself to pay that much for it. wacko.gif If I knew a way to get raw milk for the same price as what I pay in the store, I'd try it.
