Florida No-Fault Auto Insurance To End - On Oct. 1

lisar replied: Well I live in Florida and either way I have to pay the insurance. My vehicle is financed so that way I have to carry full coverage. I am just curious as to weather or not they are gona let everyone drop the liablity part also. Either way I will still carry ALL the insurance I dont want someone suing me for everything I have worked my butt off for.

grapfruit replied: Ok, I'll be honest I didn't read all of the article (it was long!) but here's what I think I'm getting. Correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not from FL.

The FL insurance law states that before everyone had to carry some sort of Medical coverage (which is PIP, I'm not from a PIP state, so I know nothing about it). That's going away, you don't have to have PERSONAL medical expense coverage. It seems like you still have the financial responsibility (i.e. need liability insurance) so if somebody hits you you're still ok? Am I getting that right??? I know here in OHIO you don't necessariliy have to have INSURANCE, but you have to be financially responsible. Meaning you can give $20,000 to the state and be "self insured" (but who would do that?).

Summing up: The issue is the medical coverage and that's it. I'm 99.99% sure we don't require people to carry medical coverage...but I do make them sign off if they don't want it.

Hmm...interesting to say the least. I know there aren't many "no-fault" states left, I believe MI is one of them though...that's the only one I can remember from my classes I paid attention can you tell?

They only have a financial responsibility law that kicks in AFTER an accident. That's stupid. That's like watering your flowers after they're dead.

Exactly. You get in an accident with no insurance. Then you're required to get insurance. What good does that do?

Kaitlin'smom replied: As a licensed insuance rep (not FL) oh my and yet one more reson I wont live in FL, love to visit but wont take up residency. This will be a nightmare

kit_kats_mom replied: ROFL. Yes, there are some pretty bad drivers down here. Besides the usual harried moms and dads and college students, we also have a disproportinately large elderly population (many of whom are very reluctant to give up their licenses) and a huge tourist industry. The tourists don't know where they are going, the old people can't see over the steering wheel and the moms talking on her cell phone. Yep, sounds like a bunch of trouble to me.

I grew up in Jersey. Hated the expensive auto insurance, but love the cheap gas that you don't have to pump.

Heheh... She was thinking 40 year old. In your mid-twenties you're paying more than 5,000.00 a year if you have a newer vehicle here.

So, I guess the 4,000.00 figure did come from her, but she was thinking old people rates. lol
