Flu shot?

coasterqueen wrote: I know there is a huge flu shot shortage going on so only those high risk are going to be aloud to get them.

I'm going to ask my doctor today but did any of you get a flu shot while pg? When I was pg with Kylie I had every opportunity to stay away from those who I could possibly get it, tongue.gif and was mostly pg spring and summer when there was no worry.

I've always personally been against the flu shot, but now I'm not sure whether I should or not. sad.gif I'm also wondering if Kylie should get it. The doc wanted to give it to her last year but there was a shortage then too. She ended up getting the flu twice in one month and pretty bad. So I was thinking if she does have the opportunity to get it maybe I should.

What are your views about this? I guess I'm just worried because Kylie is exposed to kids at daycare and those kids also go to school so the exposure is great and then they go to playgroup type activities during the day where she's exposed to TONS of kids. sad.gif

MomToMany replied: I never got one while PG. Hannah got one last year, and she got sick 2 days later with a fever of 105*. She will never get another one, and the rest of us won't either.

I don't see any advantages to the flu shot. It might work for some, but I'm refusing to get them for my family.

coasterqueen replied:
That's always been my view. Everyone I talked to that had one got sick. BUT the research I've been doing lately and talking to a few docs in the area say that most people wait til November or such to get the shot and then you are already exposed to the flu bug by that point and the shot takes 1 month for the vacinne to "take" to keep you from getting it. So they say it should be given in early October to avoid being exposed too early to it.

So I just don't know sad.gif

amynicole21 replied: I usually don't get them, and I won't be getting one this year. I got one for Sophia last year, but I'm still undecided about what we will do this year. Sorry, I'm no help! rolleyes.gif

DansMom replied: My OB didn't want me to get it---I was due in late November. I can't remember her reasoning, though.

I never have gotten a flu shot. With supplies low, it's unlikely I'll do it this year. DH and I discussed it last year, and decided against the shot for Daniel. Our pediatrician agreed---you'll see a lot of different views on this, though. Every pediatrician has his or her own strong viewpoint.

MommyToAshley replied: I've never gotten one. I had considered it for Ashley last year since the flu season was supposed to be so bad, but the Ped's office and every place else had run out of them. So, I never got one for her, and she didn't get sick. I don't think I will get it for any of us this year.

kit_kats_mom replied: K is scheduled for hers next Tuesday. I made the decision after a lot of research. She is getting it because she is in a home daycare situation and since last years flu killed so many kids. I spoke with my ped and she will be getting the "single vile" dose instead of the "multi vile" one. My ped said that the multi vile dose contains more mercury and is also stronger so it is more likely to cause the flu after the shot.

I asked my OB if I needed to get a flu shot and she says she doesn't reccomend it (because she is basically against them) but if I decide to do it, I need to only get the single dose shot as well because of the mercury concerns.

jdkjd replied: I get one every year. I got one last year when I was PG with Kiera. They said only PG women in first trimester shouldn't get it, that the rest should.

I've never been sick and I don't know anyone who has gotten sick (and my employers have offered the shot since I left law school-so 5 years with everyone I know getting it.)

Just my experience.

mama3x replied: I've never had one but DD had 5 RSV shots (one each month from October to February). In January and February she had regular flu shots. She got a fever from the first or second RSV shot but the others, nothing. Drs. say it's a signal the body is creating antibodies. She and I also became virtual hermits, going out into public once a month.

DH had one last year b/c he has co-workers whose kids get sick all the time plus many clients are immigrants, people with questionable hygiene, homeless, and mentally unbalanced. With DD being so preemie, we felt he had to get one.

This year we are all getting one. My OB isn't really pushing for it but something is telling me we should do it.

Everyone should just go with the gut feeling and of course it depends on where you live and how much you get exposed to others/crowds.

coasterqueen replied: Well my OB definitely recommended it as long as our area is going to get them and they have pg women on the list for risk. She said hopefully we'll know something next week.

Since Kylie is in daycare and exposed to a lot of kids because those kids also go to school I think I'm going to take my chances and get her the shot if it is offered. Right now they say 23 months and younger. She's 25 months so I doubt she'll get to get it but I'll try. I'd rather her get it than suffer with the flu like she did twice last year.

kimberley replied: like someone else, everyone i know who has gotten the flu shot, has gotten sick. i try putting as little crap in myself and kids as possible. we don't get them done.

Sunflower04 replied: Joey is in daycare too and he is always getting sick. For that reason Joey got a flu shot last year as well as this year. My work also gives the shots for free and I have gotten them for the past 4 years and never been sick.

coasterqueen replied:
I agree with you on putting as little "crap" in my child as possible, but one thing that's against my child is her being in daycare. Since I can't SAH...I feel that maybe I need to have her get the shot to protect her. She got the flu twice really bad last year in one month...I'm not sure if I want to make her go through that again...and I was nursing then...I'm not nursing her now so she's less protected.

Also, since my doc has adviced me to do it for my unborn baby's sake I am going to do it if I can.

As far as those getting the shot and getting sick..I've seen that too, but I've been doing some research and talking to those people and those I know who have gotten the shot and got sick waited til November (more mid to late November) to get it when they are already more than likely exposed to the flu virus and it takes about 15 to 30 days from what I'm hearing for the vaccine to take effect. So they would get sick if the vax hadn't taken affect and they were exposed to it.

I'm finding more people NOT getting sick with the shot than I am who are. But you obviously hear more from those who had a problem with it versus those who haven't wink.gif.

DansMom replied: I've just discovered on an allergy board that flu shots can cause a bad reaction if your child has an egg allergy---I don't know if this is common knowledge, so I thought I would pass it along. It may be worth taking into consideration if you think your child might have some food allergies.

A&A'smommy replied: I want Alyssa to get one but I don't know if she is old enough... but my neice gets it every year and ends up in the hospital and I REALLY don't want her to have to go through that and I don't want it either not when I have a baby to take care of! We will see I don't really have a view on them I'm thinking maybe I should do some research!
