For those with cats I need some help - Food?

TANNER'S MOM wrote: My new cat only eats canned food..I hate the smell. I have tried a few things.. Iams being the best for smell.. does anyone know a kind that is canned but doesn't stink up the whole darn house when you open it.

cameragirl21 replied: maybe get some science diet or ivf diet food, it's not diet food, just stuff you can only get from the vet, it's more expensive but higher quality so it doesn't smell as much.

My3LilMonkeys replied: My cats love our local store brand and Friskies, neither of which have much of a smell. 9 Lives is the worst I've smelled by far.

I also find that the chicken/turkey/beef varieties don't smells as bad as the tuna or liver varieties.

luvmykids replied: Will she eat the soft food in the pouches? I never could get over the smell of the canned but gradually got my cat onto the soft stuff by mixing it with the canned until little by little I didn't have to put the canned in anymore.

A&A'smommy replied:
that is what I was going to suggest...

you can buy soft cat food in a larger bag too I believe and it usually doesn't have a very strong odor.

grapfruit replied: I use Friskes, which isn't too bad. My kitty only really likes the carved tuna and samon ( puke.gif ) But he's a picky cat and actually perfers dry food. (no table scraps for him!) His fork full of canned food is his treats. rolleyes.gif

grapfruit replied: ok, why did that go all bold???

eta: never mind, it's not bold anymore wacko.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: If you leave out the dry, sooner or later the cat will get sick of being hungry and eat it. Just like a kid. wink.gif

As far as smells go, I get the pouches for treats for our two cats. They get one each day as a special treat. I have bought the Iam's stuff and the Whiska's stuff, both which don't have a bad smell. Well, they don't smell great, but the smell doesn't linger around. I have found the canned stuff to be much stronger smelling than the pouches. Although, the pouches can get VERY expensive. You have to go by the weight on the box. For our two cats, if we were to let them eat soley the pouches, we'd be having to get a whole box of them every day. That's about $4-$5 a DAY for the two cats. Yikes!

ETA: you can also buy the dry, mix a little water in it and warm it up in the microwave. The water will produce a gravy for it and the food will get soft. Wahla! Instant "canned" food, only much cheaper. smile.gif

coasterqueen replied: Nope! We buy special au natural cat food that is like organic cat food and it still stinks. The only good thing about it is our cat pukes clear from it instead of nasty brown from the other foods. Sorry, tmi. blush.gif

coasterqueen replied:
I beg to differ with this. smile.gif We tried that with our cat and she didn't eat for days and so we took her to the vet and found out she has a tooth problem. Now she barely has teeth, but she has some problem to where it's actually painful to eat the hard food.

Cece00 replied: Can you feed it outside so that the smell wont be IN your house?

MotherForever2043 replied: We usually only feed her Iam's dry cat food. And sometimes we'll give her canned and/or the little pouches.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I don't blame her. Poor thing is probably sore. sad.gif If my cats had those issues I wouldn't even try the dry stuff either. No sense putting the poor kitty through pain just to eat. That's sad. sad.gif

TANNER'S MOM replied: I am trying the whiskars pouches which she loves but still meows the hungry meow after eating.. but I have found she likes the dogs food and will eat it in between..silly cat likes Purina One..lol

luvmykids replied:
rolling_smile.gif I had a cat who thought he was a dog, he even had his own version of barking emlaugh.gif Anyway he ate dog food too rolleyes.gif
