Freakin' Terrified - Tripp fell from about 4 ft on head
Bamamom wrote: Since Katie has been born I have occasionally let Tripp ride on the cupholder area of the stroller. He's small - only 23 lbs - and it just seems like a good place for him and it keeps them both together and compact. I've never really thought about it before today though - I always put Katie Grace (in her car seat) in the stroller FIRST. Then I put Tripp on the cupholder facing me with his legs through the handle. Well today for some reason I got Tripp out of the car first - threw him onto his little perch, turned to get Katie and heard a thump. His weight wasn't counter balanced and so the stroller turned over with him, making him fall face first onto the asphalt. He has a HUGE knot on his forehead. I'm just sick to my stomach. He's acting fine, no vomiting, no staggaring, his eyes aren't dialated but I'm SO scared. I had a nurse practicioner look at it and she said just to watch him but it looks soooooo bad.
Any advice? I just know in my gut that it cracked his skull - but she said even if it did that they don't treat that unless he shows other symptoms.
I just feel like I need to throw up. Bad mommy - I should never have had him up there. Never again - I swear.
A&A'smommy replied: OMG how scary!!!!!!
lovemy2 replied: For peace of mind - I think I would take him to the emergency room for a cat scan/or xray -
Not a bad Mommy - we all do things/make mistakes -
Danalana replied: I agree, I would take him for a scan or something. I also agree that everybody makes mistakes. I am praying that it turns out fine!
Bamamom replied: I thought so too but my nurse practicioner(sp?) said all that will do is expose him to unnessassary radiation. She said it's equal to about 30 xrays to do a catscan and that they aren't always reliable - they may miss a burst capilary. So if we had it done today, then he starts showing symptoms tomorrow or the next day they would have to redo it.
I just called a retired ped who goes to my church and he said the same thing. Watch for symptom.
He is very responsive and wakeful. Walking and talking fine. Ate a good lunch.
I'm still scared
Danalana replied: That makes sense. I think it's a good sign that he is alert and eating...it sounds like he has a tough noggin'!
holley79 replied: Sorry that happened.
MommyToAshley replied: How scary! Hope he feels better.
Don't beat yourself up, we all make mistakes.
coasterqueen replied: Aww, hun. I'm sure he's fine. Really. We've all made mistakes like that.
One time I had Kylie (age 1.5 years or so) in her umbrella stroller - we were just walking and all of a sudden I started running with her in the stroller and then stopped immediately. I was just joking with her when I stopped so abruptly. I THOUGHT she was strapped in. Well, obviously not, because when I stopped suddenly she did a face plant right into the road. She had the HUGEST knot on her head and was screaming badly. I felt terrible. I was for sure as hard as she hit the ground that it was split open but thankfully not. Was my very stupid moment for sure.
Hugs coming yours and Tripp's way. I'd just keep an eye on him. I wouldn't take him in for an unnecessary scan. If you see anything out of the ordinary take him in. Kids heads are harder than we tend to think.
Bamamom replied: You guys are so sweet.
Something the ped said that made me feel better - all there is on the forehead is bone and skin so the knot looks really big. If it were an arm or leg then there is soft tissue so you don't see the knot as much even though it is there.
I just wish the nausua (man I can't spell today) would go away. I just feel awful.
Calimama replied: How scary!!!
indywndy_04 replied: OMG - you poor thing!! We have all done stuff like that, accidents are just that...accidents. Don't beat yourself up over it, he will be fine. My friends 8 wk old had a skull fracture, nothing bad that they did, just a wierd accident and they did nothing with him, so I think you are doing the right thing, just keep an eye on him and see how he is doing. It probably looks worse then what it really is.
Jamison'smama replied: So sorry that happened.
When Jamison was 6 months old, I "let" her fall off a photo table at JC Penneys while getting her pictures taken. --Huge bump on her head! I took her to the doctor and the nurse there said her son fell out of a grocery cart onto the concrete floor--we all make those mistakes--the bump is a good thing---if there wasn't a bump, then you would need to worry more.
A&A'smommy replied: Kids are SOO resilient!!! One time my husband and I were keeping my niece and nephew at one of our first app. well he had volunteered me to keep them, Alyssa at the time was still pretty young so I didn't get a whole lot of sleep well they were playing on the stair and Jeremiah (DH) kept telling them to get off the stairs and finally our niece took a nose dive into the CARPETED (it was super soft, and cushioned), I heard her screaming and ran downstairs and grabbed her up from DH to see if she was okay she had a knot on her head and then she started throwing up, we were SOOO scared we called everyone we could to find out where we should take her or if we should wait on his mom. She ended up not having a concussion but omg scary
(sorry I just remembered this) but anyway he sounds fine to me, try to relax
NaturalMom replied: oh how scary. im sure he will be fine. ;-) my son fell off the top bunk while i was on the phone. he landed on his head on the corner of the tv stand. He was barely 2. he got like 5 stitches. I felt terrible that i let him climb up there. SO i know how scary that is!! hope he is well!!
CantWait replied: Poor little guy. I'm sure he's fine though, just keep an eye on him. Lesson learned and we ALL make mistakes. Unfortunetly parenting is a job we sometimes don't always get perfect. Don't beat yourself up. KUP on how he's doing.
kit_kats_mom replied: It sounds like he's probably ok but I know that nauseating feeling all too well.
When I went to the gyn for my 6 week post partum checkup with Katherine, I had taken her out of her seat then I just set her back in the seat when the dr. came in. The seat was on the floor with the handle back. When I went to leave, I grabbed the handle (expecting it to pop up into carrying position) and picked the carrier up. unfortunatelly, the handle had locked in the down position, so all I managed to do was fling my 6 week old, face first into the tile floor. Talk about guilt and fear. I've never felt so bad in my life.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: See we all have a story about doing something similar. I don't think you need to worry. I'm sure a cracked skull would show instant symptoms. I would just have him sleep with you tonight, just to make sure there is no concusion (sp?). If he is acting like a normal kid, playing and eating, then I really think you have nothing to worry about.
Here's my story....Wil was spinning around our bedroom one night, stopped, and then landed (because he was so dizzy) face first, or head first, into our dresser knob! I was sure that the metal knob had fractured his skull. He had a golf ball sized bruise and bump on his forehead and it turned a dark purple in like 30 seconds. He was screaming and I just felt awful. Our ped said the same thing...to "just watch for symptoms" and that he would be fine. And he was. The swelling looks awful at first, but it had gone down by the next morning. Just you wait...
luvmykids replied: Oh I know that feeling, please don't be so hard on yourself
Once Colt moved a chair onto a step on the patio and climbed on it; when he did, it shifted ever so slightly and tumbled down the step and he landed forehead first on the concrete. It looked terrible, I was sure I'd wake up in the middle of the night to find him comatose or something but by the next morning it was hardly even visible.
All the signs sound good, as scary as it is, I'm sure he's just fine
Bamamom replied: You guys are da bomb - you dont know how much better I feel just knowing that other moms have similar stories.
Tripp is still acting normal. I'll probably wake him a couple of times during the night just to check his responsiveness but I think he's fine. That is such an awful feeling though.
Thanks for all your support - I love you guys!
My3LilMonkeys replied: I'm sure he'll be fine.....
Since everyone else is sharing their kid bump stories, last year on New Year's Eve Madison ran full speed into my Mil's kitchen table at 11:30 pm. She had a huge bump and we were debating whether to take her to the hospital...by the next morning she was fine!
momtoMegan&Alyxandria replied: ITA.
Sam & Abby's Mom replied: Almost the exact thing happened to us when Sammy was 1 month old ! Only the handle was up but not locked - DH picked up the carseat by the handle and since it wasnt locked the carseat flung up and actually ejected Sammy ! Luckily it happend in our carpeted living room - but talk about a scare.
We actually joke about it, now.
I'm sure everything will be just fine. Keep us posted and remember 'hind sight is 20/20'.
CantWait replied: I put Anthony (about 2 months old) on top of the counter while I was doing dishes in his bouncy seat. He got a little rowdy and bounced right off. Lesson learned.
My2Beauties replied: Hon all of us have done something like that with our kids! Don't be worried, as someone else said kids are so resilient. Heck Hanna hits her head all the time on stuff and she just gets right back up and is like HA HA I hit my head! I'd be crying They bounce back fast!! I can't think of one for Hanna right this minute, but I'm sure it will come to me.
