Gas and hiccups - advice, please
Regina wrote: When my son has got gas, he gets really upset. He doesnt get it much, just a couple times per day but when he does, he cries and I feel so bad that I can't help... or can I? He burps fine and doesn't mind that but when it comes out the other end, he is not a happy camper.
Maybe a shot in the dark, but also wondering if anyone's got advice on reducing hiccups.
Thanks in advance
My3LilMonkeys replied: Well I can't offer any advice just some for your son. I am a chronic hiccuper - I get the hiccups 2-3 times a week for anywhere up to 4-5 hours at a time. I have tried every old wives' tale and trick in the book and nothing seems to work.
I hope you get some better advice from someone else!
shelbysmom replied: When my daughter gets the hiccups, try getting her paci in her mouth. Sucking helps to get rid of them, when we were little our moms would give up some water. Since we can not do that anymore, I just try the paci or hope if she is going to get them she gets them half way through her feeding, so then she will be sucking on her bottle and they go away. As for the gas my Dr. told me to use thy Mylicon drops, but ask your Dr.
MommyToAshley replied: I was going to suggest Mylicon drops for the gas as well.
How old is your son? It may be something he is eating, or you are eating if you are BF. If it is formula, maybe you could talk to your ped about a recommendation for switching formula.
Poor little guy.
huggybugboy replied: Miles ALWAYS got the hiccups even in my belly. I realized early on when I was pregnant that he always got them when I ate chocolate ice cream (I'm an addict). Well it happened when he was outside my belly too, so first thing I did was cut the icecream out. But he still got them occasionally and still does (especially when he laughs.) Usually I get him to try to nurse or have a bottle of formula or water. If he really sucks on it, they go away. And to what they said on the Mylicon. We still live on that stuff. Now that he has formula we put it right in the bottle. Sorry hun He'll get through it eventually.
Regina replied: Thanks everyone! I actually did talk to his doc and she suggested those drops as well. Thanks again for the advice, sounds like the drops work well
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Gas drops worked wonders for my son's gas - I still give them to him sometimes but he doesn't get it so much now. As for the hiccups, I don't know how to prevent them but when Andrew would get them really bad and seemed to be really bothering him, I would just feed him even if he wasn't hungry yet and they'd go away.
toothytracie replied: Olivia lived off Mylicon drops when she was colicky. MIL swore by some stuff called Gripe water and it really works. It isn't a medicine like Mylicon but a natural thing and my SIL gave so much of that to her kid it was ridiculous. I also read on the bottle that it is for hiccups too. Maybe you can kill 2 birds with one stone. I have a unopened full bottle if you want it, I am not sure where you can buy except online. Let me know if you want to try it.
Regina replied: Thanks so much for the kind offer! very nice of you
but I bought the Mylicon drops and it seems to be working already so I am going to stick with this for a while and see how it goes.
msoulz replied: Have you tried a spoon full of peanut butter? It works for me and the rest of my family! (Not the baby, of course!!)
Rhonda39 replied: I've been using Gripe Water for my son. Mylicon drops didn't seem to help. My pediatrican actually said it would probably be more effective than the drops and it is. I purchased Gripe from the Kroger supermarket in my neighborhood. I've heard it's hard to find. You can also try a healthfood store or at babys-bliss.com or drugstore.com.
All the best.
Rhonda
Lynda836 replied: I don't know how old your little one is. Ethan get the hiccups quite frequently. If they don't go away on their own, I usually just put him on the breast...usually clears them up in a couple of minutes.
