Got an email response from Disney on - digital camera
coasterqueen wrote: Disney emailed me today answering why the Princess digital camera has the warning that it can cause cancers. They stated that the battery has lead in it and that since California has really strict laws on things w/lead in it and they sell the camera to California they have to put the warning on there. They assure that the levels are safe, but they still have to put the warning on there.
Dh thinks I should get it because all digital camera batteries have a very small minute amount of lead in it. I'm not sure what to do.
I figured those who responded to my other thread might want to know what I found out.
amymom replied: I would get it. It you want to be extra safe you can make sure the kids cannot get into the battery compartment, but I would bet that it is one of those ones with the little screw on the battery door.
kimberley replied: i would too but just be sure she used it in my presence. it's so cute!
PrairieMom replied: If those batteries have lead in them I would bet that ALL batteries have lead in them. Anyone know if this is true? If it is, you may as well get it. We have so many battery opperated things around here we are sure to get cancer. What is one more thing?
gr33n3y3z replied: I agree Get it Its very cute
JAYMESMOM replied: I agree with everyone on here. I would get it. If we never bought things that they say could cause cancer we would all be living in boxes naked.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: ITA! I know you're careful, but just make sure she can't open it and Megan sucks on them or something. Kylie will love it!
A&A'smommy replied: OHHHHHH that makes since!!! I would get it for her!!
My2Beauties replied: I agree go ahead and get it because it was so cute! I wouldn't worry about it if it's just the battery, most of them are screwed in anyways and you can only get to them with a screwdriver. I bet she'll love it.
Also, I'm with Rae, everything causes cancer nowadays
Boys r us replied: I would definitely get it! Just keep it put up until you all go somewhere and Kylie wants to use it!
baileygirl replied: You should get it~ I got vampire teeth for Delaney and the warning said it had led in it that causes cancer. Yah right
MommyToAshley replied: I guess I am the odd ball... I would wonder why this is the only "toy" that has a battery that has this warning. Most their toys take batteries, why is this the only one that contains the warning?
3_call_me_mama replied: That's what I was wondering too. So no Dee Dee you're not odd:) I think I would look for one without the warning, at least if it doesn't have the warning then it may not contain the lead, where as the one with the warning you know it contains the lead
coasterqueen replied: Hmm, well considering that you can go into Toys R Us and buy the same camera w/NO warning it would be hard to use that logic. I only know the warning because I came across it on Disney's site and it's specifically stated for California residents because of their strict lead laws. So I guess I could just go into TRU and buy any digital camera or anywhere for that matter, but if I never saw the disney warning I probably would have bought that same camera.
IMO, it's probably in ALL of them.
coasterqueen replied: Here is the actual email from Disney in case anyone was wondering:
"Thank you for your recent correspondence.
We appreciate the fact that you took the time to convey your thoughts to us. Disney always encourages our Guests to send their opinions regarding any issue, as this feedback is what helps make the Disneydirect.com the best it can be.
We want to assure you that the Princess 2 in 1 Locket Digital Camera is a safe product when used appropriately. The item has a built-in rechargeable battery , which contains lead, and the state of California has very strict laws concerning lead based items being sold. If these products are available for sale in California, the disclaimer you saw on our Disney site must be displayed. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
We look forward to hearing from you in the future."
So it is the rechargeable battery. ANY item w/a rechargeable battery has lead in it. I guess I've already caused Kylie harm for all the times I've let her use my digital camera. I think the situations are hard to avoid unless you keep them away from all battery-powered items.
3_call_me_mama replied: In that case.. I see what you are saying... I'd get teh camera, but just not let her change teh batteries or recharge them herself. (Not like you were going ot anyway )
ilovemybaby replied: I think it's just like anything really... there are soooo many warnings on things these days and the companies put them on there to protect themselves. I just got some Centrum A to Zinc tablets the other day and it says that pregnant women should not take Vitamin A supplements because large doses (8000IUs or more a day) can cause birth defects. It's just a warning because some people are so stupid that they'd take four tablets a day instead of one. The tablets only contain 2000 IUs and you only take one a day. The RDI for Vitamin A is 2500IUS. It's just like medication... they always have all those warnings on the bottles to protect themselves so no one can sue them. We have tons of things with rechargeable batteries.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: We use rechargeable batteries for a lot of things too. I think it'll be fine unless I leave them out where Andrew could get them, and I wouldn't do that with any battery. I'm sure they just have to put those warnings there to protect themselves in the unlikely event something should happen.
