Got the mess scared of me lastnight
lisar wrote: About 2:30am the dogs were going nuts so me and dh get up to see what they are barking at. Well dh notices a car parked in the driveway with its lights off. So ofcourse here he goes out the door in his boxers forgets a gun. Grabs the rifle instead and turns on ALL of the outside lights. (which btw there are alot) Well with his rifle he puts it up to look thru the scope and see who it is and what they are doing. I guess at this point they see him and quickly drive off with no lights on. We didnt get a tag number or anything. I think it was just some teenagers doing something cause at night you cant tell my house is even there unless there are lights on and there never are when we are asleep. So they probably thought they were safe there. I am standing in the front doorway to the house just watching them.
MoonMama replied: OMG, HOLY SHEEP!!!! I'm glad you guys are ok.
MommyToAshley replied: Yikes! That is scary. But, if it was just teenagers, your DH probably scared them more than they scared you.
Danalana replied: Yeah, it was probably just teenagers parking...or whatever they do now.
lisar replied: I was trying to yell at him in a quiet way that he shouldnt be pointing a rifle at them they might just shoot at him, and he said if they had a handgun at that distance they would never hit him and anyone in there right mind wouldnt try with him having a rifle. I still didnt think it was the best thing for him to do, but he really wanted to know what they were doing. And ofcourse I was standing there with my gun in my hand and went in and checked on the girls and all that.
TheOaf66 replied: if it was teengagers parking, that would have been hillarious
jcc64 replied: I know my comments about the costs of being hyper-vigilante have gotten me into trouble with gun enthusiasts here before, so I'll try to phrase this diplomatically. Do you ever worry about grabbing for a gun before first ascertaining that you are actually in danger? Isn't it possible that someone was simply lost and looking for directions, or in need of assistance or as you suggested, teenagers goofing around? I realize you live out in the country (as do I) and that it's an uncommon sight to see someone in your driveway at that or any other hour, but that in and of itself is not a solid indication that your lives are being threatened. People lose their lives in those sorts of misunderstandings all the time, and seems that given the length of your driveway and the distance between the strangers and your house, you'd still have plenty of time to prepare for the possibility of having to protect yourselves w/o actually pointing a gun first and asking questions later.
Insanemomof3 replied: I am not a gun person, but we do have the right to have them...there are a lot of crazies out there that just go out shooting, but it sounds to me like Lisa and her DH are responsible enough to not shoot before knowing what is going on.
lisar replied: This doesn't warrant a reply from me.
lisar replied: Thank you and I am a very responsible gun owner. And I will ask questions before I shoot someone. I would make 100% sure that my life or my familys life is in danger before I would ever shoot someone. And I dont just go around pulling my gun. Heck most people dont even know that I carry know. Unless you really know me you dont know that I have one on me. And thank you for the comment.
luvmykids replied: That would scare the mess out of me too, for someone to be in our driveway it would have to be deliberate, and then I'd especially wonder WTH did they come down our drive for. We have a gate clearly marked "Private Drive, No Trespassing". If someone bothers to open my gate with that sign on it in the middle of the night, I sure don't think their intentions are any good.
I realize your house might not be set up like mine where it's obvious that it took effort to get there, but it would still scare the dickens out of me.
I wouldn't get a gun, because I am nowhere near qualified to use one but if DH was home, I'm pretty sure I'd be the lookout with the binos while he went to get one.
lisar replied: You might not be able to see the house, but they did see the gate that they had to go thru to come into my driveway. The gate is never closed though.
And just so you know if you ever wanted to learn there are plenty of classes out there that will teach all the safety and everything.
luvmykids replied: I plan on taking a class one of these days, now that DH will be home with us more I'm not in such a hurry but still, there have been a few times (rattlesnake hanging around my hay, for instance) that I wished I'd already done it.
lisar replied: 410 shotgun, aim and shoot. Works miracles on a snake.
A&A'smommy replied: yikes that is scary but my guess is it was either someone just riding around, or "parking"
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Glad everything is okay! That would have scared me as well!
youngmomofone replied: Glad you're ok!
